Chapter 482: Chapter 419: Battle for the City_2

When thirty-five of them cooperated, they became an unstoppable chariot, able to charge forward without any reservations.

Easily tearing through the joint blockade of a dozen Dwarves Elves; unlike Golia, these Dwarves Elves took selfishness to the extreme. Before the engagement, they didn’t consider how to attack but how to retreat and preserve themselves.

In any situation that threatened their lives, their first response was to run.

In such cases, it was easy for a squad’s defensive line to completely collapse.

The Dwarves Elves had grown accustomed to such situations.

They wouldn’t completely collapse and retreat, but rather slip back into the shadows, sticking to the Golia squads like burrs, occasionally launching surprise attacks.

When the advancing Golia squad encountered a second team of Dwarves Elves blocking their way, they often found themselves in trouble.

This was Golia’s disadvantage. Their full numbers barely reached a hundred, which was already considered a large tribe among the Golia.

It wasn’t enough even by human standards, let alone within the ranks of the Dwarves Elves.

The Dwarves Elves troop wasn’t large either but still at least four to five times the size of the Golia’s.

However, in Gaven’s view, the greatest advantage of the Dwarves Elves was that they had an excellent battlefield commander, who made full use of Mesnoel’s complex topography to maximize the numerical superiority and spell-like abilities of the Dwarves Elves.

The commander tactically divided the Golia forces, tying down more than two-thirds of the Golia soldiers with half of his troops, while the other half faced the remaining third of the Golia, fighting with superior numbers.

Seeing this situation, a passage from "The Art of War by Sun Tzu" surged in Gaven’s mind.

The principle of warfare is to surround the enemy with ten times their number, attack with five times, divide when equal, fight if possible, flee if fewer, and avoid combat if not equal.

Translated into Common, the principle of warfare is to surround the enemy if you have ten times their forces, attack if you have five times, find ways to divide them if equal, aim to defeat the enemy if equally matched, retreat if you are fewer, and avoid battle if not as strong.

In a nutshell, it’s about creating situations where you can overwhelm with greater numbers.

I wonder if this Dwarves Elf commander has ever read The Art of War by Sun Tzu from the Path of War, but his current tactics are exactly those prescribed in the military manual.

To command so precisely in such complex terrain, he must have a view of the battlefield just like me, and the most convenient would undoubtedly be from the air.

"Found you!" Gaven’s eyes narrowed slightly, and a smile played at his lips, revealing the grin of a hunter who has spotted his prey.

The enemy was using the Dwarves Elf’s spell-like ability of Levitation Skill while also being invisible.

That was a male Dwarven Elf, not very tall, around one meter and sixty-five centimeters, but he was as muscular as a cheetah. From time to time, he would mutter to himself, and below, there would be shifts in the positions of the Dwarven Elf squad, tilting the situation in favor of the Dwarven Elves.

Of course, he wasn’t really talking to himself but was communicating with the Elves below through magic or magical equipment to adjust tactics.

What really caught Gaven’s attention was the black half mask on his face.

The male Dwarven commander, with a black half-face mask inset with lenses, was operating on the surface.

All three clues pointed in the same direction, to the Dwarven Elves’ God of Conspiracy, Velen, also known as the God of Theft, the Masked Sovereign, or the Night Masked God.

He was one of the dark members of the Cedrion pantheon, a son of the main Elf god Corellon and the Spider Goddess Rose, and the elder brother of the demure goddess Elistraee. As an accomplice in Arosh’s (Rose’s name before she was degraded to the Spider Queen) plan to destroy Corellon, he was expelled from the ranks of the Cedrion gods and banished from the realm of Alvandor.

Because of the high overlap in his divine functions, he is sometimes mistaken by some surface races as the King of Shadows, the God of Thieves, Mascus. Vick never bothered to clarify this delightful misunderstanding and even used the same Holy Emblem.

Particularly since last year, The Year of Upheaval, the series of plots and tricks devised by the King of Shadows Max not only failed but led to him misinterpreting the Hickric Scripture, allowing the Dark Sun Shylock to take away his godhood of conspiracy. The Goddess of Dark Night Shar eyed his shadowy domain covetously, and he also attracted the chaotic demon hound Cozef, leaving him a bit run ragged.

The Masked Sovereign took the opportunity to expand his influence among the surface races, converting the followers of his adversary to his own. Given the chance, Velen was very eager to annex all of Max’s followers and divine functions.

The Masked Sovereign was an active promoter of the Dwarves’ return to the surface world (as his followers refer to the aboveground world), with his predominant following among surface Dwarven Elves.

In the Dwarven Underground, especially in cities dominated by the Spider Queen Rose’s cult, his following was secret, seldom known to anyone outside the cult.

Because he opposed Rose’s matriarchal system, he taught that male Dwarven Elves and female Dwarven Elves have equal abilities and value, which has led to a highly strained relationship between the notorious mother and son as they undermine each other.

To this day, the Spider Queen Rose has not completely destroyed Velen, not out of maternal affection but because she is weaving her own conspiratorial schemes. The rebellion led by the Masked Sovereign and his followers among the Dwarven Elves is considered one of her greatest glories; her divinity is inherently tied to betrayal and chaos.

Velen is also a vengeful deity of chaotic evil. He incited the Dwarven Elves to return to the surface, not to reintegrate into the great Elf family, but to engage in evil activities here, aiming for greater territory and power, and to prepare for full-scale opposition to his mother.

Lately, having dealt with deities too often, every time Gaven saw the devotees of gods, especially races like the Dwarven Elves who are heavily influenced and manipulated by their deities, the first thing that came to mind was their divine master behind the scenes.

Just as Gaven was ready to launch a fatal attack on that Dwarven Elf commander, the Half-Moon Colt suddenly neighed loudly. Natural Power surged, Free Sprint activated, and its speed suddenly increased to the extreme, entering a state of rapid descent.

Clang! Clang! Clang!

Three successive alarm bells rang out from above Gaven’s head, immediately transforming into the most urgent, most fervent War Song. The power of the music, in harmony with him, gave him a +2 to both his Strength and Constitution.

The Singing Stone was frantically warning Gaven.
