Chapter 439: Chapter 378 The Beginning of Felen’s Big Movie_1
"We are experimenting, and failure is a normal phenomenon," Gaven said calmly. "This is already our fifth plan."
Extracting memories from a corpse, an endeavor far more fraught with difficulty than Gaven and Daphne had anticipated.
Though Daphne could barely extricate memories from the Red Dragon corpse, such memories were tightly intertwined with magic, ephemeral in nature, dissipating before they could be preserved in a Memory Projection Crystal.
Creating a Memory Projection Crystal was also much more arduous and complex than Gaven had imagined.
Especially when it comes to extracting the memories of others, the task becomes even more difficult and complicated.
Gaven, lacking extensive experience in crafting Magic Items, nevertheless possessed copious experience dealing with cursed Magic Items.
Magic Items are not simply a haphazard stacking of magical abilities.
They require a seamless integration.
After much trial and error, he had resorted to this hybrid method that bridged traditional and foreign practices.
Gaven had integrated his own modern concepts into the indigenous magic of Felen.
This time, there was finally a glimmer of success, at least with the memories of the Red Dragon corpse, which, like film scenes, were extracted one by one and cast upon the black fog screen.
Yet, it was uncertain whether this time’s success
stemmed from the amalgamation of native and foreign methodologies,
or the effect of Undead Divinity, given that death and the memories related to it also fell under its dominion.
Gaven believed the latter to be more probable, Divine Nature being one of those treasures that turns the impossible into the possible.
"Experimentation itself is about searching for the possible within the sea of impossibilities," Regina empathized. "I need a clue, what memory are you searching for?"
"Conspiracy, information about the Sambiyan Merchants’ plot to rob the East Road," Gaven provided a relatively vague criterion.
"Mr. Duke, are you preparing to use the memories of the Red Dragon corpse as evidence to counterattack the Sambiyan Merchants?" Regina’s eyes lit up with anticipation, understanding Gaven’s intention just from the criterion, "This is a good method. Rumors about the calamity on the East Road and the Sambiyan Merchants’ collusion have been around for more than a day, but we’ve been sorely lacking evidence.
If we extract this evidence and hand it over to those wronged by the disaster, ha ha ... I can hardly imagine the predicament those wolves from Sambia will find themselves in. Even if we can’t bring them down, we can still tarnish their reputation and keep them so preoccupied with damage control that they truly won’t have the time to deal with you."
As Regina discussed the matter excitedly with Gaven, she unveiled her harp, presenting the full version.
With a strum of the strings, a dissonant tune arose, causing the black fog screen to shudder for a moment as countless tendrils of black fog stretched out, entwining with the harp strings.
Gaven had earlier granted Regina full control over the manor’s power for easier manipulation, which is why her music could effortlessly envelop the entire estate.
Regina’s slim, dexterous fingers danced over the strings, causing the chaotic images on the black fog screen to flicker rapidly, some sinking away, others emerging.
"This looks promising," a look of uncontrollable joy spread across Gaven’s face.
Among the images surfacing on the screen, he spotted a familiar face—the representative of the Merchants Council, Carter.
Carter, an advocate employed by the Sambiyan Business Council, specialized in lobbying, often the clandestine kind.
Perhaps because the events were recent, the first memory extracted pertained to his efforts to persuade a young Red Dragon to ravage the Three Rivers Region.
What he said matched perfectly with what Gaven and his group had previously encountered.
"Try to channel the relevant memories into the nearby Crystal Stone to ensure they can be projected," Gaven instructed Regina from the side.
Selecting the pertinent memories was only the first step.
The second was to store them as Memory Projection Crystals.
Regina responded to Gaven through action as with her playing, shifting the tune, the images on the black fog screen tumbled continuously, finally turning into wisps of black fog that flowed through a black fog conduit into a Crystal Stone at its center.
This once crystal-clear Spirit Crystal immediately became enveloped by swirling black fog, and mysterious dark runes spontaneously emerged on its surface, seemingly conveying to the world that it was no longer empty.
"One is not enough to hold so much information," Regina said.
Without a word, Gaven drew several more Spirit Crystals from his utility bag and tossed them over to her.
The fog conduit came to life, splitting into a new channel, wrapping all the Crystals together; with a snap, they were suddenly unified.
The process lasted a full three minutes.
Only when the fog conduit ceased its pulsing did Regina’s harp fall silent.
Gaven, who had been waiting alongside, immediately took the irregularly-shaped Spirit Crystal Sphere into his hands.
Significant changes had occurred; while the assembly marks were apparent, and it was still held together by black fog, once he held it, there was a sense of wholeness. Even when holding a single Crystal, the black fog didn’t stretch thin; it felt solid throughout.
"Hurry up and try to see if you can project the memory images inside," Regina urged, unable to wait any longer.
At this point, she was even more eager than Gaven. She had previously been like a duck forced onto a perch, with no real confidence in success.
Gaven, of course, didn’t waste any words and immediately activated his mental power, channeling it into the Spirit Crystal Sphere.
He only felt a flash before his eyes.
A three-dimensional image appeared in front of everyone, a life-size reproduction, but less appealing for being in shades of black and white.
The perspective was naturally from the first-person view of the young Red Dragon.
The entire duration of the image was short, less than ten minutes.
It fully displayed the process of Duke Carter persuading the young Red Dragon.
"Again." This time, there was no need for Gaven to urge her; Regina couldn’t help herself and started strumming the strings again, and another new memory image appeared before everyone.
The characters remained unchanged; it was still that Sambiyan Duke Carter, but this time the scheming was not about the Three Rivers Region, nor about Gaven, but rather a commerce guild named Mora.
This was a family-operated Valley commerce guild that had recently risen to prominence.
They had transported a consignment of goods from the East Road to Komeer, but it was robbed by Sambiyan Merchants in collaboration with the young Red Dragon.
The Mora Commerce Guild’s cash flow was already troubled, with severe overstocking of goods. They had been counting on this batch of popular goods for a turnaround, to survive the difficult times.
However, they suffered almost total losses mid-journey and, besieged by internal and external woes, the guild collapsed.
In the end, it was torn apart like carrion by the wolf-like Sambiyan Business Council, leaving the Mora Commerce Guild mired in debt from top to bottom.
Out of desperation, many had no choice but to flee Sambia and take refuge in the neighboring Valleys—whether they became bandit raiders or farmers, that remained unknown.
Similar memories were abundant within the young Red Dragon.
Guilds that were crushed or had avoided destruction varied widely, totaling no less than thirty.
However, the most interesting ones were the well-known major commerce guilds.
Komeer had the highest number of such guilds, including the Dragon Eye Trading Company, Six Boxes Company, and the Iron Throne.
Especially the Iron Throne, which had been a prominent new power in recent decades, principally engaged in trading various military weapons; it was rumored to be backed by a great Devil.
This memory was relatively old, at least five years old. Back then, when the Iron Throne was just beginning to emerge, it was normal for it to be targeted by Sambiyan Merchants.
After watching these images, Gaven sighed with a hint of regret, "The pack of wolf-like creatures in human skin from Sambiyan are truly too cunning. The targets they choose are meticulously selected—mainly those medium and small-scale commerce guilds without powerful backers; they strike fatally when they do. Apart from a few, most of the guilds have disappeared.
If this information were released, at most it would only cause them minor troubles; it’s unlikely to deliver a fatal blow."
He had hoped to find some heavyweights among them, such as those targeting the Santarin Association, or the Crimson Feather, and failing that, even the Komeer Royal Commerce Guild would do, to intensify their hostile conflicts.
Little did he think Sambiyan Merchants, cunning as they are, would steer clear of those giant or well-backed powers.
"It’s normal, isn’t bullying the weak and fearing the strong their consistent style?" Regina commented, not at all surprised.
"Indeed, if they dared to challenge the strong, they would be lions, not wolves," Gaven quickly adjusted his mindset, "We can’t expect a young dragon’s memories to topple the Merchants Council. Causing them a little chaos, annoying them, would also be satisfying. When we have time, we should make more of these projection Spirit Crystals and distribute them to those who would be interested.
This is only part of the experiment. I’m considering whether we can edit and modify some fragments to create a complete story, store it in a Spirit Crystal Sphere, and then travel around for screenings. For example, could we edit this into a horror short film, providing viewers a visual and psychological double impact, and thereby generate Fear Points..."
"This idea is great! This idea is great! This idea is great! Once successful, it means the manor doesn’t have to wait for explorers to come, we can proactively set out. Even if the horror short film’s effects are less immersive than experiencing it in the manor, resulting in fewer Fear Points, we can win through quantity.
Creating more projection Spirit Crystals and bringing them to densely populated large cities for screenings, the more viewers there are, the greater our gain will be."
Regina’s thoughts were incredibly agile. Gaven had only started the idea, and she began to think of many things, "We should fully exploit the role of music, integrating it into the horror short film, using it to evoke fear in people’s hearts, and also creating a sense of empathy with the characters in the film. Only when they empathize will they worry about their fates and thus, feel fear.
Just experiencing it in the manor is not enough because there were never any deaths from start to end.
Death often nurtures the soil from which fear grows, so we should add a death element to it, not necessarily real. We can create the illusion or simply have it performed.
Exactly, have it performed. Sometimes, staged acts are scarier than reality. For this, I have connections and can bring a lot of professional Bards to assist; I’m sure they’ll be very interested in this.
The promotion of the projection later on can also be handed over to them. They have broader connections and know better where to attract more people."
Gaven was once again struck with awe at Regina’s talent. In Felen, she was certainly undervalued; had she been on Earth, she would definitely have been a natural-born director, advertising strategist, or even an Oscar-level actress.
Because much of this came naturally to her, without the need for learning.
With professional systematic learning, who knew what kind of talent would emerge?
Gaven had only considered it a possibility to kickstart the film entertainment industry in Felen; now, he was sure it was a certainty.
Seeing Regina’s expression, he knew he had opened another new door for her; even if he didn’t act, she would proceed on her own.
