Chapter 415: Chapter 354 Receiving So Many Gifts That My Hands Are Getting Soft_1
"I should have thought of this earlier, this is exactly my eldest sister’s style of doing things," Gaven laughed heartily, "Since that’s the case, let me give you another idea. We should make the most out of our natural surroundings. Since Darama is backed by the Is River, we must utilize the full potential of this river."
"How have I not wanted to? But the previous city lord was a shortsighted fool, whose relations with the elves of the Mir Forest were extremely tense. They forbade the Darama People from cutting down any trees in the Mir Forest, which dealt a fatal blow to our shipbuilding industry.
The barons and nobles of Darama, responding to the call of other cities’ major nobles, led their fleets away from Darama.
Now, I have only a handful of various ships at my disposal."
Saying this, Zalanda was somewhat gritting her teeth in frustration.
The current food crisis in Darama was not only related to its overly dense population.
It was also due to the collective economic blockade launched against her by other warlord nobles.
Her rise happened too fast, almost shaking the very foundations of these other warlord nobles.
But they were constrained by a life-nurturing pact signed in the presence of the Goddess of Strategy, which prevented them from taking up arms against Zalanda.
Yet, to kill does not necessarily require a knife or sword.
An economic blockade could also be fatal to a power, especially for a new and militarily strained power with unstable foundations, it’s even more deadly.
"I know." Gaven was aware of Zalanda’s plight, "Where can you find new ships faster than refitting old ones? I’m sure there are plenty of old ships lying at the bottom of the Is River. Just salvage them and repair them."
"Salvaging sunken ships," Zalanda said with a furrowed brow, "that’s not a small task."
"If we were relying purely on manpower, it would definitely not be a small task, but if we had the help of the Enlightened Trees, this task would be much simpler. As the Chosen of Lady Strategy, I believe it should not be difficult for you to mobilize some of her priests. At that point, the hardest part would instead be finding the locations of those sunken ships," Gaven showed Zalanda the advantages she was missing.
"Enlightened Trees?" Zalanda said grumpily, "I’d like to, but where would I get such trees? I don’t have a Transcendent Druid at my disposal."
"Well, that would be me." Gaven pointed to his own nose and said, "I can help enlighten quite a few trees, maybe eight or ten."
"You? You know Enlightenment? Aren’t you a Psychic Sorcerer?" Zalanda said incredulously, but in the next second her eyes widened even more, "You really know Enlightenment!"
Obviously, with her transcendent memory, she recalled Gaven’s attribute panel.
Previously, she was too overwhelmed by the reality of Gaven’s true occupation and his string of special abilities to consider it thoroughly.
After all, the shocks Gaven provided were one after another.
"I’ve mentioned before that I have connections with the Fairy Wilderness. I’ve helped them resolve some issues and formed an alliance. This is a reward from the pact," Gaven explained patiently, "Not only can I help you enlighten some trees, but I can also represent you and travel to the Mir Forest, trying to ease the relations between Darama and the forest’s races. If it’s possible to facilitate an alliance between you, that would be even better."
"If that’s the case, then it would be wonderful," Zalanda said, spinning around with joy.
Darama was far too close to the Mir Forest, the straight-line distance no more than twenty kilometers, and it lay directly alongside Taisa Path, the trade route running through Thacel.
If this issue could be resolved, Darama would gain a stable rear area and even be able to bring the vast fertile land between the two river basins under its control.
"Don’t rejoice too soon, I said I’d try, that doesn’t guarantee success. After all, the natural races in different forests vary greatly," Gaven cautiously tempered his assurance.
"In this world, there is no such thing as a sure thing," Zalanda nodded, understandingly, "An attempt is still better than having no solution at all."
"Before that, please collect as much information as possible on the native inhabitants of Mir Forest for me: the main races and powers, including past conflicts with Darama. I need it all."
"No problem, leave it to me," Zalanda said.
"Do you have any other problems, big sister? We might as well discuss them all. Perhaps I can offer some out-of-the-box suggestions."
"Sure, follow me..."
After these two matters, Zalanda knew that Gaven was no longer the little boy who used to hide under her wings. He not only had unique insights but also possessed many unimaginable abilities.
To her, what seemed like insurmountable problems might just be a simple task for him.
And indeed that was the case.
Gaven’s ideas were often quirky and ingenious, focusing his strategy on the demi-human races.
He could even conceive of bolstering a Hobgoblin Tribe in the Marching Mountains, to create a world-upturning tactic there.
If managed well, indeed it could be an effective method.
With the Path of War at her disposal, Zalanda was not particularly afraid of those assembled monster tribes; rather, the greater nuisance was the plethora of small, nomadic tribes scattered everywhere.
This type of strategy, though, was built upon having ample resources, a long-term strategy.
Gaven took the initiative and said, "Our partnership is a long-term affair. We’ll discuss the details over time. It’s about time we left; we’ve been here long enough. Your subordinates are probably worried by now, and I’ve also prepared other gifts for you."
"More gifts? Why didn’t you bring them all at once?" Zalanda immediately perked up on hearing this.
She had received so many gifts today that she was almost numb to it, but no one ever complains about having too many gifts.
"This gift is a bit too large to bring inside."
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go," Zalanda actively dispelled the last refuge.
"Ouch!"
A massive figure, caught off guard, plummeted headfirst towards the ground.
Who else could it be but the diamond-strong Nola.
She had been waiting outside, originally thinking that after a couple of hours of conversation, they would come out. Little did she expect that the wait would turn out to be three or four hours long.
Bored, she eventually leaned against the magic barrier and fell asleep.
Nola, with agility that belied her enormous size, reacted even in a drowsy state of sleep; before her head could hit the ground, her body had already responded, pushing herself up with one large hand and springing to her feet.
Her large eyes sneakily peered inside and, seeing Gaven beside Zalanda, she couldn’t help but reveal a big smile and said, "Young Master Gaven, it really is you who’s come back, haha... Where have you been these past six months? We’ve all missed you, but of course, the one who missed you the most is the City Lord, that is, our Captain..."
As she spoke, her gaze involuntarily fell on Zalanda. If it had been in the past,
Zalanda would have already flown into a rage from embarrassment, but this time, she was surprisingly calm. No, there seemed to be a hint of shyness.
It was truly unusual, far too unusual.
What magic had Young Master Gaven cast on Zalanda?
"I missed you all too, missed the Militia." Gaven said with a smile, "Here I am, unable to hold back after just half a year, returning to see you all."
"Let me tell you, our Militia is quite different from before now," Nola couldn’t help but boast, "Our Cavalry Squad is now known as the Nort Honor Guard, and our Militia has become the Regular Army, named the Nort Legion, and I am the General of the Nort Legion."
"Haha... I never imagined the day would come when the wild girl would become a General," Gaven couldn’t help but laugh heartily.
In Nort Castle, besides Zalanda, the one with the best relationship with Gaven was the very ’Giant Barbie’ in front of him.
Back then, both of their characters and physiques were completely opposite.
Before Zhang You came and took over his place, Gaven used to be relatively timid and weak, and physically smaller compared to his peers.
Born in the wilderness with Half-Giant blood, Nola was tall and sturdy from a young age, fearless of both heaven and earth.
Because they both faced discrimination and ostracism, these two people with such contrasting characteristics gradually came together.
Nola would stand up to protect Gaven, while he would take advantage of his status to procure extra food for the ’Giant Barbie’ who was always hungry.
"Hehe... Only you, Young Master Gaven, dare to call me by my old nickname. Those bastards in Nort Castle have all become like the City Lord, sitting up straight and being meticulous, so dull!" Nola said with a slight pout, somewhat displeased. Her strength had grown, but her straightforward personality hadn’t changed at all.
As they conversed, Gaven and Zalanda had already approached Nola.
Gaven couldn’t help but compare their heights with his hands and then pinched Nola’s arm, chuckling, "Wild girl, have you gone through a second growth spurt? Why does it feel like the height difference between us hasn’t decreased, but actually grown even bigger?"
Nola jumped away as if stung by a scorpion when Gaven pinched her.
A blush rose on her baby-like face that didn’t match her physique, and she stammered, "I’ve got to tell the others in Nort Castle the good news of Young Master Gaven’s return, I’ll go first..."
Young Master Gaven was still the same Gaven, yet the aura he emitted was very different from six months ago.
He was exuding a pleasant and familiar scent, very comforting and warming.
But she couldn’t recall what this scent was exactly; it seemed a bit like the natural odor of the wilderness, a bit like the warm sun in spring, and a bit like the gentle breeze of summer.
Where he pinched her felt tingling, as if electrified.
Nola had never felt this way her whole life; her heart felt like it was about to jump out of her chest.
Even in a Berserk State, she had never felt this way.
"Wait!" Gaven grasped one of Nola’s large hands, "Let’s not spread the news of my return for now."
Normally,
Gaven wouldn’t have been able to hold onto Nola; in fact, it would have been more likely that she would yank him off his feet.
But the moment her hand was grasped, Nola felt as if all her strength had been sucked away, her legs even going slightly weak.
The charm enhancement from the Heart of the Queen and the Chosen of the incomplete Goddess of Strategy,
had brought Gaven’s Charisma attribute to twenty. His Transcendent bonus, "Lady’s Companion," was in a perpetual state of activation, increasing his infectious and lethal appeal to women.
Especially towards the ’Giant Barbie’ Nola, with whom he had grown up, their special bond was no less than that with Zalanda— at least, that was how Nola felt about Gaven.
Now, this ability further amplified and catalyzed these feelings.
And Gaven, the person involved, hadn’t fully realized this yet; after all, this was an intangible quality, projected outwardly, and hard for one to notice about oneself.
"All right," the ’Wild Barbie’ no longer exhibited the ’Giant’s rage, only the obedient doll remained.
Seeing Nola’s demeanor, Zalanda couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy, "That wild girl, only you can tame her. I’ve never seen her so obedient before."
What she envied was not the flavor of Gaven, but that of Nola.
"Haha... Really? In that case, why not let her come with me back to the Valley? I could use a fierce warrior like her to lead the charge." Gaven said jokingly.
"Wishful thinking. If she were to leave, the Nort Legion would be headless," Zalanda rejected without hesitation.
"What are you talking about, she is a soldier of the Nort Family, and I am now formally a Nort..." Gaven’s words were cut off halfway, suddenly stopping.
He seemed to have carelessly, steered the topic into a minefield.
The expressions on both Zalanda and Nola darkened.
