Chapter 377: Chapter 316 Cursed Item_1

The earlier explanation was concise, passing over the origin of the Demigod Ruptured Palm so lightly, not out of a deliberate intent to conceal, but under the belief that August and the others had already explained the situation to the Grand Inquisitor, Valon, in their letters.

As soon as Valon took it into his hands, he enabled his God-Given Skill for his own use. Gaven thought it was in appreciation of the Destroy Evil Skill, to win him over.

Little did he expect that the other party was completely unaware of this detail.

Just from this one issue, it was evident that the Grand Inquisitor’s understanding of True Gods far surpassed that of August and Darnell, making him not so easily fooled.

After a moment’s thought, he articulated carefully, "A severed limb is still a severed limb, especially given the current predicament of the Undead Vengeance Goddess, whose spirit has been severely wounded due to battle with the Demon Lord Okas, leaving her in a comatose state.

This severed limb is meant to reclaim her Undead Divinity, to aid in her healing.

Perhaps it is only because the divinity was expelled from the limb that it had the chance to be completely destroyed."

Expelling Undead Divinity is one thing, and absorbing it is quite another.

Even if Gaven trusted Valon and Darnell, along with the rest of the Paladins, he dared not reveal his capacity to absorb Undead Divinity. It was better to let such secrets rot in his stomach. So many have spilled their brains for a mere hint of divinity.

If word got out that he had control over Undead Divinity, countless cultists and undead creatures would come for his head.

Valon had no questions about this explanation. Instead, he took it at face value, for it made the most sense. If Gaven were to claim he had the ability to absorb Undead Divinity, that would truly be illogical.

Besides, if he carried Undead Divinity himself, even if he couldn’t detect it, the Hammer of Justice would have responded when he was guiding it to bestow the God-Given Skill earlier.

"How come you are so well-informed about the Undead Vengeance Goddess’s situation?" Valon promptly raised a new question. After all, she is an Evil God, a Dwarves Heretic God at that, with few worshippers aboveground. Since the comings and goings of gods are ever secretive, it begs the question how a mortal could know so much.

Darnell stepped in to clarify for Gaven, "The incident with the ghosts at Weizemay Manor was the doing of the Undead Vengeance Goddess. After Mr. Gaven broke the Undead Vengeance realm there, that mentally deranged Evil God targeted him, marking him as a Blasphemer and sending her followers to assassinate him.

The result was an accidental massacre at the hands of Mr. Gaven, using traps to turn the tables. One of the victims was a Sacrificer of the Undead Vengeance Goddess. The disposition of the Dwarves is something the Grand Inquisitor is surely aware of – for their benefit, anything can be betrayed, including the deities they worship."

"So it is." Valon couldn’t help but size up Gaven once more, as if seeing him for the first time, "And what about that God-Given Skill, Destroy Evil? It should belong to a benevolent deity and seem related to the abilities of the deities associated with forging, yet I have scoured the pantheon and heard of no deity who possesses and grants such ability."

Of course, Gaven could not disclose that it manifested through an accumulation of the Force of Destiny combined with the powers of the Magic Network. He vaguely explained, "I can’t be entirely clear about that. After cleaning the Weizemay Manor, I slept there for a night and discovered this skill the following day, perhaps related to the destruction of the Undead Vengeance realm, as it belonged to an evil entity."

"The powers and actions of deities indeed aren’t something we mortals can fathom," Valon said, without further questioning Gaven’s explanation, but instead encouraging, "Whichever True God has granted it, it signifies recognition of you. I hope you can shoulder more significant responsibilities."

He then turned to Darnell, "The collaboration you mentioned doesn’t involve having Mr. Gaven use his ability on those sealed cursed items, does it?"

Darnell nodded eagerly, "That is exactly what I and Teacher August intend. It will both mitigate risks and bolster the power of good, a win-win situation."

Yet the Grand Inquisitor did not immediately decide, pacing back and forth, "Our Monastery only has a few sealed evil items, most of which are cursed items. I wonder if they fall within this capability?"

Gaven truthfully answered, "I’m not clear about this matter myself, the best course of action would be to personally conduct some experiments."

Cursed items refer to those magic items that have negative effects.

The severity of these negative effects can vary, some may simply cause inconvenience without causing actual harm, such as a powerful magic war axe that makes its user continuously lose hair or lose interest in women for as long as they hold it. As soon as one stops using it, these side effects will automatically disappear.

There are also some side effects that are more powerful, even deadly, and they will persist even after one stops using the item, until a spell like Remove Curse is used to heal them. For some extremely malicious curses, even a Wish Spell might be needed.

There are many reasons why cursed items are produced.

Creating magic items has never been an easy task; the process is intricate and complex. The slightest mistake does not mean the item has failed to be made, but that it has developed a magical effect beyond the creator’s control. If this magical effect is benign, it results in a qualified magic item; if malignant, it becomes a cursed item.

Even regular magic items don’t ensure that they won’t have problems in the future; time changes everything, and magic is no exception.

The rules of magic are not immutable, not to mention that the Magic Goddess is already the third in her lineage.

Can you still expect today’s magic to remain the same as it was a thousand or even ten thousand years ago?

Magic items themselves are subject to magical degradation, influence from powerful magic fields, distortion by powerful beings, among other things, all of which can lead to their transformation into cursed items.

Speaking of distortion by powerful beings, Foul Giants are a prime example. Anything that falls into their hands invariably turns into something twisted and degraded.

The last category is those crazy, evil spellcasters or creatures that deliberately create things to harm others. These are not just simple cursed items but evil artifacts, with a special name—Evil Instruments.

Both the Deformed Golden Crown and the Evil God Emblem Ring belong to this category.

While debating the differences between cursed items and evil instruments, Gaven and his companions, led by Valon, had already traveled through the dark underground tunnels and arrived at the monastery’s secret underground chamber.

This secret chamber was located directly beneath the main hall where Gaven had previously received divine grace. If one were to calculate based on the direction and distance of entry, it would be positioned exactly under the Statue of Tyr and the Just Hammer.

Standing outside the door of the seal room, one could clearly feel the rich, gloomy, and cold aura emanating from within.

It’s not merely evil, but also foreboding.

Only after Valon had disabled the triple protection of traps, magic, and physical barriers could everyone enter the room.

The room was not small, but the items it contained were few, amounting to only about a dozen upon a quick count.

Most looked quite ordinary, with only a few emitting a strong aura of malevolence. Placed right in the center was a warhammer.

The surface of the warhammer was coated with a thick aura of death, and even with powerful seals in place, it was impossible to completely contain it.

Gaven couldn’t look away from the moment he laid eyes on the warhammer.

It wasn’t that he recognized the warhammer, but the aura it radiated was all too familiar to him, the Undead Divinity!

Clearly, it was a warhammer desecrated by a death deity.

Feeling Gaven’s gaze, Valon explained, "This weapon is called the Sunrise Warhammer, a powerful Holy Warrior’s warhammer that once belonged to the founder of the Monastery of the Hammer of Justice. Unfortunately, he perished in battle against the cultists of the former Death God Milkau. Although the warhammer was retrieved after much hardship, it was defiled by evil and has yet to be purified."

Gaven couldn’t help but ask, "If that’s the case, why not beseech the God of Just to intervene personally?"

"Attempts were made long ago, but my lord did not respond to the prayers. Perhaps my lord has other plans for this matter," Valon made an excuse to exonerate the God of Just.

Gaven was not surprised; making excuses for one’s deity is a necessary skill for every qualified clergy member, with higher-ranking clerics excelling even more in this skill.

They certainly couldn’t admit that their gods are not omnipotent.

If those deities were as omnipotent as their followers believed, not just Felen but the entire Multiverse would be peaceful and harmonious, with heaven on earth everywhere, devoid of conflict and war, only tranquility and peace.

Let’s just say that the gods are busy.

Busy dealing with more powerful foes, busy with intrigue, busy vying for more worshippers to strengthen themselves, busy with jealousy, busy with love and affection.

Although he was itching to get his hands on the warhammer imbued with Undead Divinity, he already had his own ideas about handling this weapon.

The difficulty in purifying this weapon ultimately lay in its Undead Divinity.

As long as the Undead Divinity was extracted, there would be no need to Destroy Evil, and it was likely that the warhammer would regain its original form.

Alright.

No more pretending, he admitted it.

He really coveted the Undead Divinity it possessed.

After learning about the usefulness of Undead Divinity for Weizemay Manor, he had been scratching his head about where to find death-related divine nature.

He had always been considering deities with death clergy, but he had overlooked something.

Divine nature didn’t necessarily only exist in deities; it could certainly be found in some powerful objects related to deities, especially Divine Artifacts.

That’s the key to what makes a Divine Artifact.

Of course, Divine Artifacts aren’t so easy to come by.

But at least there was a method to consider; after all, many Divine Artifacts are not in the hands of the gods but among mortals, on Earth, and some even lost, gathering dust in some abandoned Underground City.

Now, without even looking for them, one had presented itself to him.

But without asking, he knew that Valon would never allow him to directly handle the weapon since he had not witnessed the power to Destroy Evil.

His understanding of Gaven was entirely from the letters of Darnell and August.

With a gradual approach, as long as all other issues were resolved, there was no worry that the other party wouldn’t bring it up proactively.

Being relatively conservative, Gaven said, "Although I have experience in destroying a few evil artifacts in the past, that was all when I knew them inside and out. In a moment, I would ask the Grand Inquisitor to explain in detail their abilities and origins. It would be best to find matching items to attach to them, so we can maximize their effectiveness.

To be safe, let’s start with the cheapest, weakest ones."

"How about starting with these few?" Darnell, who was speaking, pointed to three brooms and said, "These three Beating Brooms were seized from a Swamp Hag. They might not be the least valuable here, but they are quite useless.

If you use Identify on them, it will show them as Flying Brooms, but once you actually equip and use them, they will come to life, knock the user off from midair, and attack the user.

If you’re hit by the broom’s head, it’s quite possible to be blinded for a cycle."

After listening to Darnell’s introduction, Gaven, who already lacked confidence, felt even more uncertain.

Whether it’s the Deformed Golden Crown or the Evil God Emblem Ring.

Although they are evil, their abilities have a strong tendency.

One could guess based on these tendencies.

But these three brooms in front of him, no matter how he heard it, had a chaotic vibe.

Not evil, but failed in their creation, incorporating unintended magical effects.

It was questionable whether his skill to Destroy Evil could even dismantle these magic items.

Even if destroyed, whether the useful attributes could be extracted was another new problem, since that next step wasn’t under his control.

Seeing that Gaven did not speak, Darnell took the initiative to ask, "Mr. Gaven, do you have any further questions?"
