Chapter 374: Chapter 313 Divine Grace from Just Hammer_1
"Although I know that Mr. Gaven is being modest, I’m still very pleased to hear it, hahaha..." laughed the Grand Inquisitor of Valon heartily, "We shouldn’t be standing at the door talking business. Come, come, let’s move inside to discuss this further."
As he led Gaven and the others further in, he couldn’t help but ask, "Could you tell me more about the situation with Weizemay Manor and the Dwarves Vampire? Although I received letters from Darnell and August, the details were too vague, and the opera outside tends to exaggerate."
"Your Excellency, it is my greatest honor to share with you..." There was no need to conceal this matter since Darnell had been involved throughout the process. Even if he didn’t speak up, Darnell would have.
Gaven recounted everything from when they started cleaning the Weizemay Manor with Darnell until they destroyed the Demigod Ruptured Palm of the Undead Vengeance Goddess.
In recounting the events, Gaven made every effort to adhere to the facts, emphasizing the importance of Darnell and the other Paladins and downplaying his own role.
Despite the Grand Inquisitor’s broad experience, he couldn’t help but inhale sharply at the end, giving Gaven a thumbs-up, "No wonder Darnell and August praised Mr. Gaven so highly in their letters. Both your style and ability are extraordinary, beyond what others your age can compare with. What do you think, would you be interested in becoming a Paladin? If you wish, I can teach you and ensure your protection."
"Thank you for your kind offer, Your Excellency," Gaven repeatedly shook his head, "I know my own character better than anyone else. I am far from being a true Paladin, especially after seeing Old Master Duke’s simple persistence, it seems even further out of reach."
Although I cannot become a Paladin, I can be a friend to the Paladins, an ally to the Hammer of Justice.
Whenever the Hammer of Justice calls, I will surely come to aid."
"Good, good, good," said the Grand Inquisitor repeatedly, "Mr. Gaven, your words are enough. From this day forth, you are a friend and an ally to the Hammer of Justice. To witness our friendship and seal our alliance, I shall personally guide the Hammer of Justice to bless you, follow me."
Upon hearing the Grand Inquisitor’s words, Gaven was somewhat stunned, and even Darnell couldn’t hide his surprise as he hastily said, "Your Excellency, this is a critical moment for you. Guiding the Hammer of Justice would significantly slow your progress."
The Grand Inquisitor spoke solemnly, "Lord Darnell, just a moment ago Mr. Gaven was continuously praising you, saying you are the most qualified Holy Warrior he has ever seen. How can you now speak words least fitting for a Holy Warrior? Whether I break through today or tomorrow makes no big difference, but Mr. Gaven’s selfless acts of banishing evil must be rewarded substantively."
These words left Gaven somewhat dumbfounded.
While it was true that he had driven out evil, it wasn’t out of the same selfless heart as that of the Paladins; he was motivated by personal gain and had profited significantly.
Yet it seemed that because of this deed, he was about to receive a reward.
Furthermore, doing so would slow the Grand Inquisitor’s promotion to a higher Professional Level, which called for a powerful, experience-consuming spell.
But to Darnell, these words were like an epiphany, as he solemnly said, "I have been privately covetous indeed. Your Excellency is absolutely correct – those who perform valorous deeds must be rewarded. It is a law adhered to by our Monastery of the Hammer of Justice. Mr. Gaven, please, this is your well-deserved reward."
Thus, Gaven was somewhat bewildered as he was led into the main hall of the Monastery of the Hammer of Justice.
The divine statue standing in the center of the main hall was naturally that of Tyr, the God of Just.
What truly caught Gaven’s attention, however, was the hammer in front of the divine statue.
Its design was identical to the warhammers used by Darnell and August.
To be more precise, their warhammers were replicas of this one.
But this hammer was incredibly massive, of the same model as the colossal axe that Thornspike wielded. At a glance, it was clear it was not meant for human use.
The first impression it gave was one of antiquity.
It seemed like a very ordinary hammer, devoid of any magical aura.
However, the hammer was suspended in mid-air.
With such a massive build, no one could believe it was a normal warhammer.
Without asking, it was clear that, just like Gaven’s combat armor, a spell had been cast to conceal the magical aura.
This hammer was most likely the treasured relic of the Monastery of the Hammer of Justice, the origin of its name.
"Mr. Gaven, please step forward to receive the blessing of the Hammer of Justice," Valon said, standing beneath the colossal hammer.
As the moment approached, Gaven hesitated slightly.
After all, everything the other party was doing was entirely unexpected and outside of his understanding.
But considering what he knew of Holy Warriors, especially the characters of Darnell and August, it was unlikely that the Monastery of the Hammer of Justice would play any foul tricks on him.
At most, it would be a test of his character or alignment.
While Gaven didn’t consider himself a good person, neither had he committed any egregious acts of villainy, particularly since his return. After reflection, he could affirm that his deeds were for the good of the country and its people.
The Milestone of Destiny was clear evidence of this.
The only dark spot was that he had gathered some evil beings under his command, yet even their actions were just, their deeds benevolent.
He wanted to see exactly what kind of potion they were concocting.
Having resolved his doubts, Gaven no longer hesitated and stepped forward. After a moment’s hesitation, he chose to kneel on one knee.
Whether one believes or not, maintaining minimum respect for the true gods is appropriate, especially for such powerful and benevolent gods.
Valon nodded in satisfaction and placed his hand on the gigantic warhammer, channeling a sacred light into it.
The plain massive warhammer hummed to life, glowing brightly. The hammer, which had been lying horizontal, suddenly stood upright with one of its faces directly facing Gaven.
A brilliant beam of light shot down from it, enveloping Gaven, who was kneeling on the ground.
The beam was so dazzling that Gaven couldn’t keep his eyes open.
However, as he stood within it, Gaven felt no sensation of burning—instead, it was a warm breath circulating within his body.
From the inside out, it was indescribably comfortable.
Streams of dark mist drifted out of his shadow, that was the negative energy lingering within.
Gaven couldn’t help feeling relieved, thankfully he had been wise enough to recognize that bringing Amanda to this sacred place would cause many inconveniences, hence he had left her back at the manor.
Otherwise, faced with the situation at hand, she would have either been killed on the spot or blasted out of his shadow.
However, as a large amount of negative energy dissipated, Gaven became worried.
Would this affect his ability to control shadows?
After all, his shadow was animated by negative energy.
Upon quietly sensing the connection between himself and his shadow, not only had it not been severed to revert his shadow to a mere silhouette, but the link had also become closer, making manipulation more convenient.
It felt as if it were an extension of his body, a newly grown arm, how to manipulate it was merely a thought away, even the sense of distance was beyond compare to before — like when you try and grasp something, you can usually tell at a glance whether you can touch it or not.
It seems that even for shadows, the balance of Yin and Yang is crucial, it’s not just a matter of simply pouring in more and more negative energy.
When no more dark mist was floating out of his body and shadow.
A sequence of glittering golden characters appeared out of thin air before him.
Divine Blessing Selection (Choose One)
1. Supernatural Blessing — You can, like Holy Warriors, add your Charisma modifier to all your saving throws.
2. Aura of Courage (Supernatural) — You have received Tyr’s blessing, from henceforth you will no longer feel fear (whether from magic or other sources), and comrades within three meters of you will be infected by your fearlessness, gaining increased saving throws against fear. This effect only works when you are conscious, disappearing when you are unconscious or dead.
3. Divine Health (Special Ability) — You are immune to all diseases, including supernatural or magical diseases (such as corpse rot and lycanthropy etc.).
Divine Blessing is in fact the God-Given Skill that Olive and August talked about last time.
Last time, Gaven attributed Destroy Evil to a God-Given Skill.
He had not expected to actually unlock a God-Given Skill, and now he was presented with three.
All three of these are professional abilities of a Holy Warrior.
All three skills are super useful, he wanted them all.
To choose one out of three, isn’t this troubling?
There’s no need to elaborate on Supernatural Blessing, it’s this skill that makes Paladins seem steadfast in whatever they do and have a success rate beyond ordinary people, because they truly have divine support.
Of course, it has to be linked with Charisma, the more attractive one is, the stronger the ability.
Gaven’s Charisma attribute is not low, it’s very practical, but compared to the next two, this one falls behind.
Aura of Courage, befitting its name, allows Holy Warriors to fear nothing, even entities more powerful than themselves, they dare to charge fearlessly.
Ceylon previously faced down Gaven’s Death Roar without even blinking, thanks to this ability.
Such an ability is not only useful for oneself but can also affect those around.
But upon seeing Divine Health, Gaven had already made his choice.
Once one becomes a professional, even those professionals with less physical enhancement, ordinary diseases will struggle to pose a threat to them.
What’s truly scary are those magical diseases.
Corpse rot and lycanthropy are just some of the more well-known amongst a myriad of magical diseases Gaven could list, such as blinding sickness, heartfire, heat madness, shaking sickness, and slimy doom, etc.
All of them are deadly, troublesome, mostly incurable, and have to be either cleansed or healed by a cure spell, with some being resistant even to magical remedies.
Not to mention how high the spellcasting levels for cure spells and disease removal are, finding a Priest who can cast such spells is very difficult.
The main issue, however, is whether there’s even an opportunity for treatment because these magical diseases are often transmitted during battles from creatures carrying the contagion.
And it is the Undead beings or Undead Spirits that carry the most of these magical diseases.
And now, being a Blasphemer of the Goddess of Undead Vengeance, he had caught the attention of a whole bunch of Undead Necromancers and Undead Spirits.
This ability was precisely targeted; at least most magical diseases could be ignored.
Even with this Special Ability, there’s no absolute certainty.
Nothing is foolproof, Special Abilities included.
Having made his choice in his heart, the other two options faded away, leaving only the one that grew brighter and brighter before being absorbed into his body.
Gaven could vividly sense a change in his body, but couldn’t quite pinpoint what had changed.
He just felt thoroughly comfortable and a warm glow from the inside out.
He had the illusion as if the balance of Yin and Yang had been restored.
The body is Yang, and the shadow is Yin.
Though entirely separate and opposing, they complement each other.
As the light dissipated, the massive Warhammer returned to its original simple appearance, Valon standing below looked somewhat dejected, giving off the impression that he had aged a bit more.
