Chapter 288: Chapter 231 Willing to be a Maid_1
Lady Estelle, with her daughter in tow, bowed slightly, her voice frail and low, "We are aware that this manor no longer belongs to us, but we have no way to leave. Please, sir, allow us to reside here. We do not ask for much, just a room to shelter us from the wind and rain. Even the stables will do. We are willing to serve you in the capacity of servants."
She had grown weary of a life dominated and enslaved by others, yet she had no choice but to accept her fate once more, hoping only that this time, their luck might change for the better, and they would meet a kind master. But she dared not hope too much, for the Goddess of Luck had never paid them any attention - not once.
The brutality and capriciousness of Duke Kolonfer had worn her down completely. For her own survival and that of her daughter’s, she had been so lowly, as low as the dirt itself.
Behind her, Amanda struggled desperately, seemingly trying to voice her own thoughts, but Lady Estelle held her tightly, preventing her from moving an inch.
Gaven smiled gently, "My lady, there’s no need to belittle yourself so. You are of more use to me than you think. Though the manor is now mine, you and the miss will always be the half masters of this place. I intend to establish roots here, and who knows, there may be many areas where I will require your assistance. As for your residence, you are free to choose any room in the manor. Once you have made your selection, simply inform me," he said, half in jest, half earnestly.
"Thank you, sir," Lady Estelle murmured, completely taken aback by Gaven’s amiable response. Tugging at her daughter, she said, "Quickly now, thank the gentleman."
Gaven’s politeness slightly eased Amanda’s guard, as she whispered a thanks in a voice barely louder than a mosquito’s hum.
She didn’t even dare to raise her head.
It was impossible to connect this timid display to the aggression she had shown just a few nights earlier, when she had thrown herself at Duke Kolonfer.
"May I request that you and the miss materialize into physical forms? Also, we need to align our story. Let’s say that when the domain that shrouds this place was lifted, you were revived without knowing why. Do not mention anything about being Earthbound Spirits or the affairs of the manor. After all, among my companions, there are priests and holy warriors who are quite sensitive to these matters, and quite dogmatic. I fear it might cause unnecessary misunderstandings," Gaven said with a mix of truth and pretense.
The truth was that he genuinely didn’t know how Darnell would react upon discovering their existence.
The pretense was that he did not wish to divulge the secrets of the manor to others so freely.
"Sir, the holy warriors you mentioned, they aren’t the ones from a few nights ago, are they?" Lady Estelle asked, her face unable to hide her reverence for their combat prowess.
Fear filled Amanda’s small face.
"Yes, the same ones," Gaven nodded.
"Then it might be best if we do not meet them," Lady Estelle certainly knew the disposition of holy warriors. She once admired such people, but now, being what they were, reviled and hunted as Undead, she feared and dreaded them.
"Avoiding them isn’t suitable. Especially since holy warriors are very sensitive to negative energy. If they realize it themselves, it becomes hard to explain. It’s better to engage with them proactively, and out of respect for me, even if they notice something off about you, they are not likely to resort to violence," Gaven decided based on his understanding of Darnell.
This man’s perception might well surpass that of the Transcendent.
Merely having come into contact with a Dog Demon was enough to raise his suspicions.
Not to mention Lady Estelle and Amanda, two Earthbound Spirits within Weizemay Manor.
When the time came, he might out of good intentions to eliminate a potential threat for Gaven, search the manor thoroughly, and Gaven would be ill-placed to stop him.
It was better to put the whole matter out in the open from the start.
Although Darnell was a standard paladin, he hadn’t reached a level of obstinacy that precluded all flexibility and adaptability.
"Sir makes a good point. Just give us a moment, and Amanda and I will find some clothes," Lady Estelle agreed amicably, making a new request.
This was purely a precaution, as she wasn’t sure if they would have clothes upon turning corporeal, and even if they did, they would likely be tattered and worn. Duke Kolonfer wouldn’t have bothered to change their clothes when he buried them.
And even if he had, that was two years ago.
"Please, take your time. I’ll wait for you in the front hall," Gaven naturally could not refuse.
While waiting, Gaven had already begun planning how to develop Weizemay Manor.
He would certainly transfer some manpower and resources from Dragon Oak Territory, but not in large quantities.
First, the distance between the two was vast, seven or eight hundred kilometers one way, which could not rely on ordinary means of transport. With Virginia the only one capable, she could run back and forth maybe two or three times a day at most; thus, transport capacity was severely limited.
Secondly, the population there was mainly the Fae Race and Gnolls. Besides Anna, there wasn’t a single pure-blooded human in the entire Dragon Oak Territory.
This area could not and should not follow the old ways.
He wanted to recruit a majority of the standard races, and for that, he would have to start from the surrounding area, beginning with Battle Valley.
He had no acquaintances in Battle Valley.
The few outside Weizemay Manor were basically all he had, and he had to consider using them, especially the sweet Regina, whose influence was far greater than it appeared.
In the future, her reputation would not be limited to Battle Valley or even the Valley.
She was not the biological daughter of Lord Ilmet, but his adopted one; her father was a Moon Elf Lord, and her mother, a half Song Dragon.
Her grandmother was Essenblra, a very famous Song Dragon in the Valley.
Around the year 1371, in Battle Valley, she established the Essenblra Sisterhood in her grandmother’s name, gathering sisters with Essenblra’s blood flowing in their veins to join her ranks. This organization, composed of Song Dragon descendants, played an active role during the Dragon Madness Lock wars, as well as in the large-scale invasions of Dark Elves to the surface.
If nothing went wrong, she was also a harpist.
Of course, these illustrious achievements were all events that Gaven knew would occur in the future.
The current Regina had not yet conceived the heart to form the Essenblra Sisterhood; her primary focus was still on training those Moon Elf archers and Druids, leading them to expand her influence in several valleys surrounding Battle Valley.
Influenced by her grandmother Essenblra, Regina had always believed that the Elves’ passive acceptance of the world was a mistake, especially the grand withdrawal in response to the call from Eternal Gathering Island, which was a grave error within an error.
The Elves should take a more proactive stance toward the world, using their abilities to assist this world and its people, making everything better, and to recreate the glory of Mystorno, where countless kind races coexisted in harmony.
In this respect, she coincidentally agreed with Gaven.
Regarding Regina, Gaven had so far always adopted an attitude of appropriate distance.
This woman of outstanding Charisma, probably surrounded by males from childhood to adulthood, would merely be placed among the group of pursuers if he were to act rashly.
Instead of clumsily showcasing his so-called male advantages, it was better to create more glory to attract her attention. Women who admire high causes focus on things differently from ordinary women.
"Sir, you may proceed," Estelle’s gentle voice rose from behind Gaven.
Estelle and Amanda, now corporeal, had already changed and dressed at an efficient pace.
Although Weizemay Manor had been deserted for over two years, it had always been haunted from the beginning, located in a remote area that ordinary people dared not approach. Combat Profession Practitioners who came here primarily aimed to purify ghosts and did not rummage through belongings.
Most of the items here were just coated in dust, relatively well-preserved, including the clothing of the owners.
However, Estelle and Amanda were not dressed as noblewomen or princesses.
Instead, they were adorned in plain maid outfits, not the kind beautified with lace borders—such luxury items like lace were seen only in bits and pieces on the clothing of noblewomen.
It was simply ordinary linen clothing, with sleeves and pant legs tailored to be tight, accompanied by a matching linen apron, all meant to facilitate work.
The maid outfits on both of them were quite ill-fitting; the one on Estelle appeared to be noticeably small.
As ghosts, she seemed thin and frail without much flesh on her, but once corporealized, she was much fuller than expected - especially in the bust and hips area, round and ample, as if made for childbearing. Her clothes were stretched taut around her, offering a distinctive charm that triggered an impulse in Gaven, the desire to see her dressed in a specially tailored black-and-white maid outfit and what kind of allure that would bring.
The outfit on Amanda, however, was somewhat too large, hanging loosely on her, concealing her hands and feet. It made her already petite figure appear even smaller, especially her sharp little face which seemed not larger than Gaven’s own palm, thereby making her eyes appear exceptionally large.
But when she examined her clothes, joy that she couldn’t hide shone in her big eyes; it was the best piece of clothing she had worn since she was born.
Before, the clothes she wore were hand-me-downs from her mother’s worn garments, and they didn’t dare tailor them too fittingly for fear of drawing her father’s attention, which would bring misfortune on both mother and daughter.
Facing the actively committed Estelle, Gaven responded somewhat helplessly, "Madam, didn’t I already say that you don’t need to serve as maids? You can just wear your own clothes."
Estelle replied with determination, "Please, Sir, do not call me Madam again. Lady Estelle is dead; here, there is only the maid Estelle. Also, our clothes have long been burned to ashes by that bastard. These we found were other maids’ clothes, and I’ll adjust them when we get a chance."
"Alright, Madam... I mean, Miss, then please follow me," Gaven thought it over and conceded; after all, the first thing anyone would do if their house was haunted would be to burn all the deceased’s belongings.
So he no longer dwelled on it and headed towards the front door.
As he reached the door and took out his temporary access token, Gaven was reminded of something and turned to ask Estelle, who was closely following behind, "Miss, do you by any chance have keys to the manor or anything like that? This token I have is only temporary."
This question left Estelle taken aback, answering, "Shouldn’t you be the one to ask, Sir? Isn’t it you who should bestow the keys for entering and exiting?"
"Oh?" Reminded by her comment, Gaven suddenly focused his attention on the Ghost Manor within his Consciousness Sea, and indeed, it had a feature that he had overlooked before—the ability to create keys and a key-free list.
The key-free list was simple; if someone’s soul vibration was left on the Mist Barrier, they could freely enter and leave Weizemay Manor thereafter.
The key creation meant inscribing a universal mark on a physical object, allowing anyone possessing the corresponding key to freely enter and exit. Similar to Gaven’s temporary access token, it was temporary, and the duration could be chosen by Gaven, with options of one day, ten days, one month, and one year—the last being the longest lasting.
Moreover, the access token that Gaven had, once the Infinite Revenge Cycle was broken, had turned useless.
Or to put it another way, the Mist Barrier that enveloped Weizemay Manor had been twisted by the Force of Destiny that formed a Milestone of Destiny, merging with the manor itself.
Besides keys, there was another way to enter the manor.
