Chapter 281: Chapter 225 Right Decision_1

David was small and thin, timid by nature, slow in action, and often stammering in speech. Even after his later recovery, he still appeared silent and reticent. No one held much hope for him and thought he was more suited to become a Priest. Yet, he chose the path of the Paladin with unwavering conviction.

Along the way, his journey was extremely difficult. Among his companions, he was the slowest learner and always scored the lowest in various assessments. But his heart to become a Paladin grew ever more resolute, especially during the time he spent out in the world for his training, where he exhibited all the noble qualities expected of a Paladin—humility, justice, honesty, bravery, honor, and compassion.

In comparison to this quality, his relatively weaker strength seemed unimportant. As long as he could stay true to himself and continue on, his strength would slowly improve.

On the contrary, everyone had high expectations for Dick, who seemed too impetuous and driven by self-interest. Despite several attempts at correction, he had not managed to change.

Once this trial was over, if he had not corrected his ways, the path of his Paladinhood might come to a premature end.

For continuing down this path would only lead to harm to both himself and others. One day, he would be stripped of all his Paladin abilities by Tyr, better to steer to another path before going too deep, perhaps one that would suit him better.

Having stepped foot into Weizemay Manor, Gaven felt sincere admiration. Darnell was a true Paladin through and through.

He might weigh the words of others, questioning if there were any traps hidden within.

But for a Transcendent Paladin of Tyr, there was absolutely no need for such considerations. Whatever they said was in complete adherence to their own hearts and in line with the Paladin’s lofty ideals, without any personal biases or impure thoughts.

In Darnell’s eyes, purifying Weizemay Manor was more important than obtaining ownership of the manor.

This is the mindset of a Paladin.

A height unattainable by the average person and a pattern incomprehensible to evil individuals driven by selfishness.

To such people, Gaven always offered the utmost respect, but he could never become one of them because he always placed his own interests at the forefront of everything.

Now, it was almost certain that Darnell’s guesses were correct—at least, the part about the situation here changing according to hatred was.

He had successfully infiltrated the castle of Weizemay Manor.

All along the way, let alone living beings, he hadn’t even encountered half a Specter.

Darnell, along with his two apprentices, had thoroughly vanquished the place six times over. Apart from a family of three confined by special circumstances, the rest of the Undead had no ability to regenerate.

This had made Gaven’s task a lot easier.

The first floor of the castle had no windows and, being dragged into the crevice between the Material Plane and the Shadow Plane, there was no talk of the moon.

It was pitch black.

Gaven had no intention of summoning his Combat Armor; the enemies he faced were various Bound Spirits and Specters, and Damage Reduction was useless against them.

Instead, he’d stand out like a beacon, merely attracting Hatred to himself.

Luckily, the Dragon’s Sight Glasses granted him powerful Dark Vision. Although he dared not say it was as clear as day, at least discerning objects wasn’t a problem.

It was clear at a glance that the first floor was not meant for living but for storage, similar to a basement warehouse. Even if people did live there, it was likely allocated for servants and maids.

Gaven was tempted to turn the place upside down to see if he could gather useful information—after all, that’s how the game is played: to piece together fragmented information, combine it with bold speculation and careful verification, in order to find the key to the whole story and break the case.

But fearing he might miss tonight’s key scenes, he decided to first play through tonight’s storyline.

Reading strategies and experiencing them firsthand are two different things.

The layout of the second floor also wasn’t for the main residents but held a dining room, kitchen, utility room, and the quarters for the servants.

The third floor was where the manor’s owner lived.

Just as he stepped onto the third floor, Gaven encountered one of the night’s main characters—the owner of Weizemay Manor, the guardian of Gryphon Hill, Duke Kolonfer.

The figure was semi-transparent, an immediate giveaway that he had become either a Bound Spirit or a Specter.

He was leisurely flipping through an ancient book, legs crossed in a relaxed manner.

That demeanor did not fit a Bound Spirit or Specter—it was as if he was still lord of Weizemay Manor.

However, the fireplace in front of him had long gone cold with no hint of warmth, and nearby, a candle burned. The light it emitted was not red but an eerie green. It burned without the wax diminishing, clearly not ordinary candlelight.

Kolonfer seemed unaware of Gaven at the stairway entrance.

It was as if Duke Kolonfer lived in a different world altogether.

Gaven was simply an invisible spectator.

When he realized that the other showed no sign of noticing him, Gaven did not take any further action. Instead, he hid quietly in a corner, silently observing every move of Duke Kolonfer, especially his hands.

Gaven had not forgotten the warning from Darnell.

But what he saw made him frown deeply.

The ghostly Kolonfer was dressed in a wide sleeping robe, which covered his hands completely. He couldn’t just lift it to look underneath, could he?

He probably wouldn’t see anything anyway; after all, the other was a Specter, not a tangible being. The robe was likely just a manifestation.

Moreover, any attempt to touch could lead to unforeseen consequences.

An unusual banging sound startled both Gaven and Duke Kolonfer.
