Chapter 244: Chapter 193 Visit from the Court Archmage_1
The two remained silent for three full rounds before Feng Geda Hast spoke, "It’s not that there’s no room for negotiation."
"What conditions?" Manson asked directly.
"Explain your intentions first, and then I can consider them," Feng Geda Hast’s evasive tactic was very obvious.
"I have a shipment that was hijacked. I need to go to the scene and take a look." Manson didn’t believe for a second that Feng Geda Hast didn’t know his intentions.
He had just arrived, and Feng Geda Hast appeared right after, clearly lying in wait, knowing that he would show up at the Rocklands.
The Komeer Kingdom had never given up on the Rocklands.
Or rather, they couldn’t fully claim the Rocklands, but they absolutely wouldn’t allow other forces to tamper with it, especially the Santarin Association.
The two sides had clashed countless times over this issue, both openly and covertly. Manson had faced off against this seemingly harmless old guy no less than three times, with neither side gaining much advantage.
Both sides were confident they couldn’t be defeated by the other.
But neither side was fully confident they could defeat the other.
After all, at their level of mastery, they had many means of self-preservation and numerous trump cards.
Even with deep-seated enmity, they had to consider whether killing the other would drag themselves down as well.
"Fine, but I must accompany you throughout," Feng Geda Hast finally conceded.
There was no other choice. They were in the Rocklands, and if they had a falling out and actually started fighting, it would ultimately be Komeer that suffered.
"Lead the way," Manson indicated his stance with his actions.
Feng Geda Hast merely shifted his body slightly. Manson didn’t spare another glance at him and floated past, within two meters at their closest point.
Their elemental magic clashed, even sparking in the air.
Feng Geda Hast was not without his gathered elements; they were highly concentrated, circulating around him within a two to three-meter radius at a slower speed, making it appear less aggressive than Manson’s.
Without saying much more, Feng Geda Hast followed Manson from about ten meters behind.
Even without anyone to guide him, Manson quickly found the scene of the robbery.
After all, the only trade route that allowed large caravans to pass through the Rocklands was just a single path, so they only needed to follow it.
The two moved quickly and soon arrived at their destination.
Manson circled the battlefield first, then landed and inspected every corner without any change in expression, making it unclear what he was looking for or had found.
From start to finish, it took less than ten minutes before he opened a portal and left without even a word to Feng Geda Hast.
This made Feng Geda Hast shake his head repeatedly, "That old madman, becoming ruder with age."
Seeing off this troublesome figure smoothly, Feng Geda Hast let out a long sigh of relief.
The Komeer Kingdom and the Santarin Association had irreconcilable disputes over the Rocklands, but they had no interest in going to war with this dark ruler of the Moon Sea Region.
Because it would bring no profit or meaning, just easily dragging themselves into a quagmire of war.
As long as the other side kept eyeing the Rocklands and the High Road, the Komeer Kingdom wouldn’t have a peaceful day.
Unless the Komeer Kingdom could officially incorporate the Rocklands, garrison it heavily, and give no opportunity to the Santarin Association.
Feng Geda Hast changed his mind and decided against opening the portal, flying northwest towards Blackwell’s direction.
...
"Who did you say wants to see me?" Gaven, who was hiding in the Dragon Oak Dragon Nest, shivered and nearly dropped the pen in his hand.
"Feng Geda Hast," the Erde Messenger repeated smoothly, though the name was a bit of a tongue-twister for him.
"Hiss!" Gaven gasped.
"What’s the matter? Is he very famous?" Virginia, nearby, couldn’t help but ask when she saw Gaven’s strong reaction.
Her understanding of the surrounding situation, including the Komeer Kingdom, was still quite superficial.
"More than just famous," Gaven uttered four words, making Virginia turn pale, "He is a Legendary Mage."
The weight of a Legendary Mage was significant on any plane, as they could single-handedly destroy cities and nations.
Lord Virginia was six professional levels away from being a Legendary Mage, which didn’t seem like much.
In reality, the gap was enormous.
Once at the Transcendent level, advancing was as slow as a turtle’s pace. Gaining a level in two or three years was considered fast.
Some mages took ten or eight years without gaining a professional level.
Especially in the Fairy Wilderness, where the pace was even slower, sometimes measured in centuries. Their life was often stagnant, unchanged for decades.
In just one spring, Gaven brought greater changes to the Spring Bud Forest than all of Lord Virginia’s tenure combined, with unprecedented magic accumulation, just one step away from level fifteen, which was imminent in a few days.
It validated Gaven’s theory about professional templates being simple belief templates, where magic elements were gathered by the law of fate.
Lord Virginia couldn’t be considered merely a level-14 mage, especially in the Spring Bud Forest, where her strength in some aspects was comparable to a Legendary Mage.
"How about I accompany you?" Lord Virginia volunteered.
"No need," Gaven shook his head, "You are my greatest trump card. If things really go south, or if something happens to me, you must seal the Dragon Oak Portal and ensure the safety of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree."
The situation was constantly evolving.
To Gaven, the most important thing now wasn’t the three Gnoll towns, but the Dragon Oak Mother Tree.
As long as the Dragon Oak Mother Tree remained, he could summon more Gnolls even if he left the Rocklands.
In hindsight, the construction of the Dragon Oak Portal seemed a bit rushed.
Then again, the Dragon Oak Portal was what accelerated their development to its current state, shifting Gaven’s focus to the Dragon Oak Mother Tree.
"Alright," Lord Virginia knew that Gaven’s arrangement was the most rational and safest. Her being there was less useful than staying here.
Gaven reassured her with a smile, "This is just the worst-case scenario. He shouldn’t be malicious towards me, probably just here to inspect my Gnoll tribe’s growing influence.
The merchants of the Thousand Chief Commerce Assembly, following my suggestion, sold most of the iron ore from Blackwell to Komeer. Our Blackwell must be somewhat famous in Komeer by now. He might be here to give us an official endorsement. If so, we will be legitimate."
"Hopefully," Virginia sighed.
"How about you give me a prophecy about this visit’s fortune?" Gaven joked.
Virginia couldn’t help but roll her eyes, "I’ve already told you, you’re a black hole of fate. Anyone associated with you has their fate line distorted, prophecies are likely to fail, let alone your own destiny, which can only be determined by yourself."
"Heh," Gaven was not upset but rather pleased with himself, "At least this way, I don’t have to worry about others using prophecies against me. Alright, I’m off."
Gaven returned to Blackwell Town this time without Stelina or the Young Red Copper Dragon. He walked back alone.
He couldn’t gauge Feng Geda Hast’s attitude, so he exposed as little as possible.
To face a Legendary Mage, it didn’t matter whether he had companions.
When Gaven arrived in Blackwell Town, the whole town was eerily quiet. All trading had been paused. The merchants communicated with their eyes, not a single one dared to speak or breathe loudly.
In this town of mixed traders, everyone knew Feng Geda Hast’s name, from top to bottom.
More accurately, this was someone they typically couldn’t even dream of approaching. Now he had come in person to Blackwell Town.
Was Blackwell Town’s reputation so great now?
Or was their leader significant?
Feng Geda Hast’s first words to Gaven were, "Calsa was once my student."
Though a single sentence, it set the tone for their meeting.
He openly clarified his relationship with Calsa, indicating that their stance was aligned.
Calsa had once reassured Gaven through Bede, saying that as long as Gaven didn’t overstep and created value for Komeer, it didn’t matter whether he ruled humans or Gnolls.
Since meeting, Feng Geda Hast had spoken mostly on his own, "In his letter to me, Calsa praised you and your management of the Gnoll tribe, calling your methods groundbreaking, opening up a new path for us, possibly creating unprecedented miracles in the Rocklands with these little creatures. Passing by today, I decided to drop in, and your work surpasses even Calsa’s description."
Gaven hurried to reply, "It is my greatest honor to receive your approval. I will work even harder to unearth more minerals, and by the end of the year, I promise to double the output of Blackwell."
Feng Geda Hast nodded contentedly and casually asked, "Two days ago, on the High Road, ten kilometers from Blackwell, there was a large-scale robbery. Mr. Gaven, have you heard of it?"
Gaven’s heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected the conversation to shift there, uncertain of how much the other knew, he cautiously replied, "Yes, of course, I’ve heard. Such a large-scale robbery, scarce on even the Goblin Margins."
He glanced around and, with a look of exclusive news, whispered, "I’ve heard the robbed caravan was highly influential, known as the second Dark Intelligence Network. They were transporting weapons and equipment, allegedly for the Santarin Association. If that’s true, could there be something inside this robbery?"
All of Gaven’s information was true, except he completely absolved himself.
Until there was concrete evidence against him, he wouldn’t admit to anything, even if Feng Geda Hast seemed well-intentioned.
Feng Geda Hast didn’t associate the incident with Gaven at all.
After all, Gaven always presented himself as the Gnoll leader. Gnolls might dig mines, but raiding a large armed caravan was beyond them.
Besides, Blackwell Town was crowded with merchants, and large-scale troop movements wouldn’t go unnoticed.
Feng Geda Hast chuckled, "Didn’t expect Mr. Gaven to be so well-informed. Indeed, it was an internal conflict within the Santarin Association, just executed here. However, it indicates a significant issue, poor security in the Rocklands, hence my plan to suggest to His Majesty to restore patrols on the High Road, deploying at least ten Purple Dragon Patrol Teams to ensure the trade route’s safety."
"I fully support this proposal. Our Blackwell Town is willing to set up a patrol team rest point, ensuring two to three patrol teams can rest here, with free meals provided by us," Gaven proactively offered.
This proposal was sincerely backed by Gaven.
Because it benefitted him more than it harmed.
