Chapter 194: Chapter 156: The Ingenious Uses of the Twilight Guardian_1
With the capabilities of the Wood Escape Technique, it indeed had the ability to go straight for the kill.
Gaven was startled by his own speculation and hastily focused on the Phantom of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree.
Indeed, he found the soul totem of the Twilight Guardian on it.
Leaving a soul totem on the Phantom of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree was not exclusive to Dragonization. Subjects of Enlightenment Spells also could not escape this fate.
For the two were connected in a continuous line.
His own Enlightenment Spell was not purely powered by his own strength but was bestowed by the Phantom of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree, just like the Flawless Teleportation of the Mother Tree.
Following the guidance of the soul totem, he discovered that the Twilight Guardian had not gone to the corrupted roots but was on the trunk, not far from Nectar Village. What was it doing there if there was nothing wrong?
Just as Gaven’s question arose, the figure of the Twilight Guardian emerged from the roots again.
Seeing his appearance, Gaven immediately knew what he had been doing—he had gone to groom and dress himself.
Now it was no longer a haphazardly piled up mix of wood, dirt, and stone.
Its limbs, dragon wings, and tail were all replaced with ropes—Dragon Scale Rope from Nectar Village.
It had just run to the rope storage depot of Nectar Village.
The Dragon Scale Ropes were not entangled haphazardly but were carefully woven, very sturdy, forming beautiful braided patterns that seemed to show the texture of muscles.
Larger patches of Dragon Scales were attached to its torso.
Not true Dragon Scales per se, but rather the kind of Dragon Scales bark grown by the Dragon Oak Mother Tree, arranged and embedded into the body in the manner of Dragon Scales.
Clothes make the man, just as the saddle makes the horse.
This saying was not in the least untrue.
After such grooming and dressing.
The attractiveness level of the Twilight Guardian soared.
Since the Twilight Guardian could freely replace parts of its body, this meant that he would have more freedom to adjust it in the future.
For example, to carve and create a new dragon head for it, or collect various sturdier and more unique types of earth and stone, and so forth.
While planning these things, Gaven focused on the attribute changes of the Twilight Guardian, not through the Dragon’s Sight Glasses, but directly observing the detailed data through the soul totem.
Life Dice: 197 (16D10+112)
Size: Colossal
Attributes: Strength 26, Dexterity 18, Constitution 24, Intelligence 14, Perception 12, Charisma 14
Spell-Like Abilities: Wood Escape Technique (at will)
Special Attack: Toxic Tail Strike
Feats: Combat Reflexes, Mastery of Innate Attacks (tail), Sprint, Surge of Strength (Strength considered as one size larger, transcendent strength bonus), Fast Regeneration (Constitution transcendent bonus).
After seeing this, Gaven couldn’t help but suck in a breath of cold air.
The Twilight Guardian’s overall attribute boost included, Hit Points +16, Strength +1, Constitution +1, Intelligence +13, Perception +4, Charisma +10.
Isn’t the Enlightenment Spell supposed to only unlock Intelligence? Why are the other attributes also skyrocketing?
And the number of Intelligence points increased by Enlightenment was also problematic. Normally, Enlightenment brought the subject’s Intelligence up to 10.
In Gaven’s case, it had shot up by 13.
The reason Gaven could think of was that he had imbued the Twilight Guardian with memories, sufficient knowledge, and Perception which was an incidental boost following the increase in Intelligence.
As for the boosts in Charisma, Strength, and Constitution, they were not the direct effects of the Enlightenment Spell but the corresponding benefits brought about by the restructuring of the body after Enlightenment.
The previous Twilight Guardian was just a heap of junk piled up randomly, while the current Twilight Guardian was a fine piece of art.
It was now Gaven’s leading combat force.
The level of difficulty it presented in close combat was beyond imagination.
Previously, they didn’t really defeat it, at best, they had just trapped it.
They had leveraged its low intelligence; the same tricks wouldn’t work on the current version.
The Twilight Guardian, now returned, bowed to Gaven and telepathically expressed, "I thank you for the enlightenment, my lord. I feel the Mother Tree being corroded by evil forces, just as I was before. We cannot sit idly by."
The Twilight Guardian had possessed memory from the start. It not only remembered the process of its own corruption but even remembered everything it had experienced and witnessed from birth to now.
When Gaven was enlightening it, he personally experienced all of its initial memories from birth to the present.
However, a large part of it overlapped with the Dragon Scale Oak experience before, and the rest was an endless lonely slumber.
The only interesting part was about the cave leading to the Dark Domain being broken through by the Foul Giants carrying Dark Servants to perform a corrupting sacrifice here and then being slaughtered by a Carrier Bug that burrowed in from the Dark Domain.
It had even fought the Carrier Bug during its corrupted state.
However, the Carrier Bug had no interest in a pile of earth and stone, and since it had no intelligence at the time, it did not pursue the bug when it retreated.
"We certainly cannot stand idly by," Gaven nodded solemnly, "but they are not weak either. I am currently gathering an army in preparation for battle. The reconstruction here is to forge a fortress for battle, to prevent another invasion. Before that happens, I hope that you do not act rashly, as being corrupted by evil forces again would be a major problem."
Gaven now feared that the Twilight Guardian would have a brain spasm and dash off to the Foul Giants to start a battle.
"It is enough that my lord knows of this matter. If my lord engages them in battle, I am willing to serve as the vanguard," the Twilight Guardian expressed a level of reason and calmness that exceeded Gaven’s expectations.
It had much of his own flair.
On second thought, Gaven felt he might have been overly concerned.
The Twilight Guardian’s mind was now crammed with the memories of Zhang Fan, which were essentially a part of itself.
Such a foolish act was definitely not something it would do, so how could the Twilight Guardian possibly do it?
Having realized this, Gaven breathed a sigh of relief and nodded, "Even if you didn’t mention it, when the time comes, I would also request your assistance."
"If my lord has no other matters, I shall go to assist these gnolls with the construction. I am very familiar with the growth patterns of the Mother Tree’s roots, and with my help, many of their tasks will be much simplified," the Twilight Guardian volunteered, ready to engage in the construction efforts of the gnoll army.
Gaven’s eyes brightened, right, how could he have forgotten about this.
The size and strength of the Twilight Guardian were by no means comparable to those of the gnolls, and with the burst of strength rewarded by the Transcendent bonus, its power was on par with that of Carrier Bugs.
It was like a super heavy truck with intelligence, lifting and dragging several tons of cargo as easily as drinking cool water.
With its involvement, the construction speed of the Dragon Oak Dragon Nest would reach a new level.
"Hold on, don’t go over by yourself, I’ll take you to meet someone."
Gaven took the Twilight Guardian to look for Chester.
These gnolls still regarded the Twilight Guardian with awe, and if it went over by itself, it would definitely cause commotion.
Even with Lord Gaven leading the way, the gnolls fled from the sight of the Twilight Guardian following behind, their eyes rolling wildly as they whispered conspiratorially to each other.
They were obviously discussing why the previously reclusive Twilight Guardian had suddenly become a little follower of their lord.
But given the intelligence of most gnolls, they could discuss for a long time and still come up with no answer.
They could only conclude that Lord was no mere mortal, and even the Twilight Guardian had to bow its head in reverence, just like them.
When Gaven arrived, Chester was busy as a bee, berating a group of gnolls, "Can’t you use your heads a bit more when constructing? The Mother Tree’s roots are our best supports. After finding such supports, you must expand and excavate around them.
The excavated earth and stone cannot be piled up randomly; all of it must be transported to designated places, not a bit more, not a bit less. Later, they will be molded into bricks and stones for a second round of construction... Why are you so dim-witted?"
Chester was the busiest in the construction of the Dragon Oak Dragon Nest.
He was not only responsible for personnel and resources allocation but also for supervising the construction.
The latter was particularly crucial, for a slight misstep could lead the gnolls to dig in the wrong direction.
Recently, he had indeed been trying to uncover talent among the gnolls as per Gaven’s instructions.
However, gnolls were not known for their intelligence, so finding intellectually superior gnolls was far more difficult than finding Gnoll Sorcerers.
To date, he had only uncovered a few minor talents, mainly in the administrative work of the gnolls.
Talent in construction.
When it came to digging holes or tunnels, they were abundant.
But for design and construction, they were utterly clueless; not one to be found.
In the words of the gnolls, a good gnoll is one who can dig a good hole.
If a hole is spoiled, just dig another one.
Design is completely unnecessary.
"Lord, what brings you here?" Chester turned around, startled to see Gaven right behind him. Realizing who was following behind Gaven, his eyes could not help but twitch uncontrollably.
No wonder the gnolls, who were usually noisy and defiant, were uncharacteristically silent this time.
He thought his own authority had suddenly skyrocketed, when actually it was respect for Lord Gaven and the Twilight Guardian.
"I’m introducing you to an assistant. From now on, he can take on some of the construction tasks for the Dragon Oak Dragon Nest," said Gaven, who had more confidence in himself than in the Twilight Guardian.
He believed that the Twilight Guardian, endowed with the knowledge and memories of Zhang You, would not perform poorly in its duties.
It might even have a good learning capacity—certainly better than that of the gnolls—having been exposed to the broad knowledge of another world.
"My lord, you’re not referring to that one, are you?" Cheste’s gaze shifted to the Twilight Guardian.
"Yes, it’s him," Gaven explained vaguely, "Don’t worry, it’s different now, having been enlightened, it has its own wisdom. It has a natural connection with the Dragon Oak Mother Tree and is adept in the Wood Escape Technique. It will depict the surrounding root system for you, making the construction work more targeted and reducing redundant effort.
Also, when constructing, try to keep more than half of the Mother Tree’s roots intact. We need to consider the stability of the Mother Tree."
Chester patted his chest in assurance, "My lord, rest assured, I have thoroughly considered this point. Moreover, the area we are excavating is nothing compared to the vast size of the Mother Tree. Until now, we have only been circling around three lateral roots, not even touching the main roots."
"That’s good to hear. Carry on then," Gaven thought for a moment, indeed, compared to the immense size of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree.
The Dragon Oak Dragon Nest they were digging was not even the size of an ant’s nest.
If the Dragon Oak Mother Tree were so easily toppled, it would have fallen countless times by now.
"I ask for your guidance in the future," the Twilight Guardian initiated telepathic communication with Chester.
Chester, experiencing this form of communication for the first time, was genuinely startled but it confirmed what Gaven had just said, that the Twilight Guardian before him possessed wisdom now.
At that moment, Chester had no idea that more surprises were in store for him.
In the following period, whenever Chester was at the Dragon Oak Dragon Nest, the Twilight Guardian was sure to accompany him.
It assisted not only in creating a map showing the distribution of Dragon Oak roots within a one-kilometer radius around the Dragon Nest but also humbly sought knowledge in construction.
Its learning ability was not just quick, it was capable of making leaps of understanding, and some of its suggestions even exceeded Chester’s knowledge, giving him a feeling akin to when he faced Gaven.
No, it was more than that.
After all, many of the suggestions Gaven offered were beyond his range of expertise.
But the proposals put forth by the Twilight Guardian were precisely within Chester’s own professional domain, and even resulted from his personal guidance.
