Chapter 1383: Chapter 727: The Enemy Most Unwilling to Face_3
The continent of Felen is merely one of the seven continental plates of Toril, and each other continent has its own pantheon.
However, these pantheons include both local True Gods and aspects of other gods from the Pantheon of Faerun. You could say some gods in the Pantheon of Faerun are aspects of gods from other continents, which essentially share the same nature.
Putting other things aside, at least the God of Gods, Ao, exists as a supreme creator with aspects on other continents.
Though the Wild Elves in Felen revere the God of the Forest, their deity is not Melikai but their own forest god, Ruirifen Rallathil. He holds the four divine positions of woodland, nature, Wild Elves, and Druids, and carries titles like the Leaf Lord, the Wild One, and the Great Oak.
Divine positions are not unique. It is common for many gods to share the same divine role.
However, gods sharing the same divine role are potential competitors. When they are no longer content with their direction of development and instead encroach upon the domain of another, conflicts arise.
For example, if Melikai wants to extend influence into the Elves, especially the Wild Elves, and Ruirifen seeks to spread his faith among human Druids, these are considered overreaching actions.
This scenario rarely occurs because it usually involves entire pantheons, leading to bloodshed and letting other Divine Residences profit as third parties.
Those Wild Elves are fixated on Gaven’s identity concerning the Conqueror Path, openly displaying dissatisfaction.
This path has already posed serious threats to them and their forest. The route from Ruitawen to Blood Gorge City skirts the Xiermingst Forest. Due to the iron mines in Colossus City and the colossal livestock in Blood Gorge City, this section has become the first busy thoroughfare.
According to the experiences of these Green Elves, when a road becomes convenient, countless intelligent lives will flock to it, establishing settlements along the way, which turn into towns and eventually cities. Their forest becomes the object of exploitation.
"In what identity do you enter the forest?" The earlier neutral voice sounded again.
Gaven paused to consider and replied, "I come as a Balancer, seeking the point of balance between development and forest protection."
"Development is always built on destruction; how can there be a balance with forest protection?"
"Only through attempting can one find it. If we don’t even try, naturally, we won’t have it. The Hobgoblins of Blood Gorge City have shown sincerity; they neither hunt in the forest nor chop trees, only gathering the deadwood nature offers for warmth and using fruits for sustenance. Yet it’s you forest Guardians who initiate attacks without fear of sparking a war, turning the whole Xiermingst Forest into a bloodbath, causing immeasurable lives lost?"
"Just because they don’t do it now doesn’t mean they won’t in the future. They are creatures only knowing how to take from nature. When the outputs of the Giant Plains can’t satisfy them, they will inevitably turn their sights to the Xiermingst Forest."
"The intention to impose a charge is the lack of an excuse."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean you’re being unreasonable, presuming crimes not yet committed and attributing them to others. Don’t you find this ridiculous? By your standards, no non-forest species should exist in the forest."
"That’s exactly how it should be; the forest belongs to forest species. Other species should live on their own lands."
"Your perspective is incredibly absurd. Even the Leaf Lord wouldn’t claim the forest is solely for forest species. The forest belongs to all life; they all have the right to hunt for food when hungry. Your extreme views and actions only drive you into opposition with all species, bringing catastrophic disaster to your tribe and the forest."
"We will meet them with our arrows until we shed the last drop of blood, invoking with our will and blood the concept of forest protection among all forest beings."
"Absurd. Even the Natural Gods compromise and allow for some development to find a balance and better protect the forest. What qualifies you for such extreme irrational actions?"
"How can you be sure the path we’re on isn’t the Will of the Natural Gods?"
Gaven and the other engaged in a verbal battle.
The thing he feared most had happened. These Wild Elves were among the most extreme nature conservationists. They revered nature above all, valuing the forest foremost, and cherishing an existence of primitive tribal life, taking only what they need, and considering anything more an affront to nature.
They held this attitude even toward themselves, let alone non-forest races.
Not even in the Fae Race had Gaven encountered such extreme beliefs.
These beliefs were deeply ingrained and couldn’t be swayed with a few words.
The proposals Gaven initially prepared, such as relocating them to Mesnoel, weren’t even brought up.
A joke.
They were living ancestors; bringing them there, even treated with reverence, would brew countless troubles, and there would be no meaningful development for him in Mesnoel afterward.
The Green Elves of the Irminster Forest once again left Gaven feeling powerless.
He possessed formidable personal and military power, yet couldn’t utilize it. If he chose to massacre the Green Elves, regardless of how secretly it was conducted, rumor could still spread, annihilating his painstakingly built reputation among natural races. The honors freshly granted by the Forest Lady—Pathfinder and Guide—would be stripped away instantly.
Yet he couldn’t really abandon the development of the Conqueror Path because of these Elves.
