Chapter 629: Chapter 630 Choosing a Consort_1 Chapter 629: Chapter 630 Choosing a Consort_1 Muniang comforted Mrs. Lin for a while before saying, “I’m going to check on Dad first.”

“Mmm, you go see him. He’s also feeling down right now. Say some kind words to him, it’ll help him feel better.”

When Muniang entered the room, she saw Zhao Song leaning against the head of the bed, looking tired but not particularly pale.

Muniang was somewhat reassured and approached to ask, “Dad, how are you feeling now?”

“Muniang is here. Take a seat. I’ve always been in good health, it’s just that yesterday that unfilial daughter really infuriated me. But it’s nothing serious. The doctor said I just need to rest for a couple of days. Your mother is making a fuss over it, insisting I stay in bed. I’m really not comfortable,” Zhao Song said with a smile.

Muniang moved a stool to the side of the bed and sat down: “Dad, you should rest more so you can recover faster. As for elder sister, you shouldn’t always get so angry with her at the expense of your own health.”

Zhao Song sighed, “What’s the use of getting angry with her at the expense of my own health? I’m already like this, and she won’t even come to see me. Instead, it’s you…”

As he said this, he shook his head helplessly, feeling that nurturing his own daughter had truly been in vain.

“I came here today not only to check on Dad’s illness.”

“Oh? What else for?”

Muniang pursed her lips and said, “Yesterday, I was disrespectful to the elders. Although Dad didn’t scold me, I know what I did was wrong. Today, I’ve come to apologize and hope Dad can forgive me.”

Zhao Song was slightly surprised. He hadn’t expected the usually stubborn Muniang to back down. He absolutely didn’t believe he had the ability to make her bow her head. Her actions were actually due to her care and respect for him.

“You’re not a disrespectful child. If one were to speak of filial piety, you place your mother above everything else. Your behavior towards your aunt and the others must have its reasons, I suppose.”

Muniang looked down, “Dad may not know that the people from the Qiao family don’t really consider me and my mother as family. When my biological father passed away, the Qiao family despised my mother for not having a son and wasting the family’s food. They called us mother and daughter jinxes and husband killers and drove us out to fend for ourselves. We’ve endured many hardships over those years. Later, when I made some money, the Qiao family became envious and made various troubles to demand money from us. Not one of them has any shame. Dealing with them, using the so-called ‘filial piety’ would only invite bullying. My actions towards their mother and daughter yesterday are just the approach I’m used to.”

Zhao Song, listening, felt his eyes redden and cursed, “That Qiao family is really no good!”

“Anyway, those things are all in the past, and I don’t care much about them now. But I was worried that Dad might misunderstand me and hold a grudge, so after much thought, I still came today.”

Zhao Song said contentedly, “It’s nothing. You and your mother haven’t had it easy these years. Reaching this point today hasn’t been effortless.”

Muniang smiled, “Thank you, Dad, for your understanding.”

“Ah right, speaking of which, have you found any suitable girl for Jianghe? The boy’s almost twenty, we should find him a wife soon, or it might be too late,” Zhao Song suddenly asked.

Muniang laughed, “Of course there are, I had Mrs. Qiao Muniang help me look, and I even carry the list with me at all times. Here, take a look.”

As she spoke, she handed the small booklet to Zhao Song, whose face also showed pleasure as he began to read it carefully.

“Mrs. Qiao Muniang introduced me to daughters from five families. One of them is Miss Li from the Li Family, who run a martial arts school and she even knows a few moves. She’s straightforward and not pretentious. Then there’s Miss Zheng from the Zheng Family; her household is well-versed in literature, boasting twin Scholars and some small businesses. Most importantly, she’s extremely beautiful. The other three are from ordinary mercantile families; you can rest assured about their virtue. These are all clients with whom Mrs. Qiao Muniang often interacts. She has a sharp eye for people and all the girls are decent and well-behaved.”

Zhao Song smiled and nodded, “It seems you still understand what’s in my heart. I don’t care much about a girl’s family background or her looks, it’s the virtue that matters most when choosing a wife, especially for someone as honest as Jianghe. A kind girl is essential for family harmony.”

“So father, what do you think of these girls?”

“I think they’re all fine, but I always feel that girls who practice martial arts can be too aggressive. If the couple were to have a dispute, with Jianghe being so gentle and never known to lay a hand on anyone, if that girl were to lose her temper and hit someone, Jianghe wouldn’t stand a chance, which is not good,” he replied.

Muniang burst out laughing, “Father has a point; let’s not consider her.”

“The others are not bad. When Jianghe comes back tonight, I’ll ask for his opinion,” he said.

“That’s good. Once we’ve made a choice, we can secretly observe her. Although it’s against traditional customs, as long as it’s done discreetly, it should be fine. We can’t let my elder brother get married without knowing anything. It’s better to meet at least once,” Muniang explained.

Zhao Song was traditionally minded; when he married Jianghe’s mother, he hadn’t seen her and only found out what she looked like after lifting the bridal veil. Yet, hearing Muniang’s words, he didn’t want to wrong his son and agreed, “Alright, after all, it’s his marriage.”

Zhao Jianghe actually took a liking to Miss Zhang from the Zhang Family, which ran a medicinal herb business. She grew up accompanying her grandfather to gather herbs in the mountains, so she wasn’t raised delicately, had a good temperament, and even knew some medical knowledge. Muniang didn’t delay and asked Madam Liu to act as an intermediary, conveyed the message to the Zhang Family, and they secretly observed each other.

Seeing that both parties were agreeable in appearance and manners, the marriage was decided. The process of setting the date, the betrothal, and all other procedures were arranged, and the wedding was set for three months later.

Zhao Song felt relieved seeing his son’s marriage settled and completely rejuvenated.

When the three months passed, and it was Zhao Jianghe’s wedding day, the Zhao Family burst with joy as firecrackers were set off. A long procession of wedding sedan chairs made its way in, and Zhao Jianghe energetically dismounted from his horse, kicked open the sedan door, and entered the Zhao household with his bride amidst the bustling crowd.

On the wedding day, Zhao Danggui also came. Zhao Song had previously warned her that if she dared to behave improperly at the wedding, he would no longer acknowledge her as his daughter.

Zhao Danggui, even if being restless, didn’t dare to act up. However, she was seething inside; her own introduced girls were rejected, yet the ones Qiao Muniang introduced were immediately welcomed. With her father treating her like this, and Zhao Jianghe behaving similarly, who really was the dear daughter of the Zhao Family?!

Qingya quietly whispered to Muniang, “Lady, I noticed that Zhao Danggui keeps glaring at you.”

Muniang glanced at Zhao Danggui lightly and chuckled softly, “She’s just furious with embarrassment.”
