Chapter 602: Chapter 603: Envisioning the Future So Clearly_1 Chapter 602: Chapter 603: Envisioning the Future So Clearly_1 The doorman, upon seeing Zhao Jianghe, didn’t bother to announce him and led him inside directly, for the Lady had long given instructions that the Zhao Family were to be considered as family, and no gate restrictions were to apply to them.
“Mrs. Lin, are you there?” Zhao Jianghe shouted as soon as he stepped into the courtyard.
Mrs. Lin, of course, understood why Zhao Jianghe came looking for her and felt, for a moment, shy like a young girl, reluctant to come out, while an overjoyed Muniang welcomed him in.
“Brother Zhao is here, come in quickly, my mother is inside,” Muniang said with a sweep of her eyes. When she saw the three to five people carrying things behind Zhao Jianghe, she paused, “Brother Zhao, what’s all this…”
Zhao Jianghe said with a smile, “My father has sent me to propose marriage to Mrs. Lin, and these are the betrothal gifts. Please don’t think they’re too little. We can’t compare with your means, but my father has really splurged.”
Muniang exclaimed, “Think they’re too little? What do you mean by bringing so much?”
Although Muniang’s bridal gifts when she married Yu Ze amounted to over two hundred loads, Yu Ze belonged to the Marquis Mansion, which naturally carried great prestige. For the common folk, a good marriage proposal might include four or five loads, and that was deemed satisfactory on face value. But Zhao Jianghe had brought no less than six loads of betrothal gifts.
Not to mention that it was a second marriage for a woman, which hardly required all this, just a token would suffice. Was Mr. Zhao aiming for a grand, impressive wedding?
Zhao Jianghe laughed, “My father said we mustn’t slight Mrs. Lin. She’s had it hard for so many years, and now, finally having a promising daughter, she’s to be married away. We definitely can’t let her be wronged. This wedding must be celebrated with grandeur and joy.”
Zhao Jianghe spoke loudly, surely on purpose so that Mrs. Lin inside could hear. At that moment, Mrs. Lin’s face blushed red, like a young girl about to be married off for the first time. Seeing how much Mr. Zhao cared about her, Mrs. Lin felt a considerable measure of relief in her heart.
Muniang smiled, “Mr. Zhao is really thoughtful; please, come in and have a seat.”
After inviting Zhao Jianghe into the house, Muniang personally poured the tea. Mrs. Lin didn’t come out, but Zhao Jianghe didn’t mind; after all, his good intentions were what mattered.
Muniang settled Zhao Jianghe in and then had Yu Ze keep him company, talking outside. This matter of the proposal required a response, and even if Mrs. Lin didn’t appear, Muniang needed to convey her mother’s opinion.
“Mother, what are you doing? Brother Zhao is here, and you won’t go out,” Muniang teased on purpose.
Mrs. Lin glared at Muniang, “You little imp, you never miss a chance to tease your mother.”
Muniang chuckled twice, then said, “Mother, Mr. Zhao had Brother Zhao come for a proposal. I’ve seen it, a full six loads of betrothal gifts! How generous! Ordinary people on a second marriage wouldn’t need all these, which shows Mr. Zhao has put his heart into it. I’ll be at ease with you and Mr. Zhao together in the future.”
Mrs. Lin laughed, “And that puts you at ease? When I’m married away, you won’t care about me anymore, will you?”
Muniang quickly replied, “How could you say that? I’d love nothing more than to get married with you and assert your authority properly. You’re just too soft-hearted, and I’m afraid others might take advantage of you.”
Mrs. Lin immediately interjected, “Enough, stop that. I was only joking. Why would you follow along? Live your life well with Erliang. And you don’t expect Erliang to become a ‘marry into and live with one’s bride’s family,’ do you? Besides, your Mr. Zhao is a good man, he understands my gentle nature and won’t make things difficult for me. And as for Jianghe and Jiangshui, I see them as well-behaved children. What could go wrong?”
Muniang stuck out her tongue, “So does this mean you’ve agreed? I won’t say anything small but you’ve already thought so far ahead about your future!”
Mrs. Lin’s face blushed red; this girl was utterly unpredictable! Her own honest nature was no match for her daughter, who had managed to fish out her intentions in just a few words!
Muniang chuckled twice, “Since mother has agreed, I should go out and reply, and we shouldn’t keep Zhao waiting for too long, should we?”
Mrs. Lin said irritably, “Go, go, go!”
Muniang bounced out of the room.
Upon arriving at the flower hall, Zhao Jianghe, seeing Muniang, looked as though he had been thrown a lifeline. Staying here with Yu Ze was simply unbearable. How could he not sense the imposing aura of the man? Once Yu Ze took a seat, Zhao Jianghe’s palms started sweating profusely. Unfortunately, Zhao was inept at conversation. With neither of them speaking, the atmosphere turned awkward, and Zhao Jianghe was almost suffering.
Zhao Jianghe quickly stood up, “Muniang, what did Mrs. Lin say?”
Muniang, seeing Zhao Jianghe’s flustered appearance and thinking Yu Ze had bullied him, glared at Yu Ze, who was momentarily baffled. He felt wronged.
But Muniang had already started chatting and laughing with Zhao Jianghe, “Don’t worry, Zhao. Mr. Zhao surely understands my mother’s intentions. The matter is settled then. Please ask Mr. Zhao to set a date when he’s available.”
Zhao Jianghe also smiled, “That’s great. Actually, my father had someone choose an auspicious date already, which is the fifteenth day of July. It’s a good day, and there’s enough time, so it shouldn’t be too rushed. What do you think, Muniang?”
With about three months to go, that indeed wasn’t too rushed, and the day seemed fine. Muniang naturally had no objections and agreed straight away, “Alright, that’s settled then. I’ll pass the message to my mother in a bit.”
“Good, I will return and inform my father then. He will surely be delighted to hear the news.”
Muniang asked Qingya to escort Zhao Jianghe out, then turned to “settle accounts” with Yu Ze.
“I asked you to look after Zhao, how did you manage to scare him like that? People who don’t know might think I purposely tried to intimidate him!” Muniang exclaimed in frustration.
Yu Ze gave her a sidelong glance, “You keep calling him ‘Zhao’ so affectionately. I’m older than you too, yet you’ve never called me that.”
Muniang immediately felt both amused and exasperated. She had come to confront him, but why was this man showing jealousy now?!
“Haven’t I been calling you ‘husband’ all along?”
Yu Ze, feeling rather pleased with that, said, “I’ve never been good at socializing, and just sitting here is indeed boring. He probably just found me uninteresting.” His tone seemed slightly aggrieved.
Muniang’s mouth twitched fiercely, “He doesn’t find staying with you boring; it’s torture. Husband, don’t you want to try improving your people skills at this point?”
Yu Ze looped his arm around Muniang’s waist and raised an eyebrow, “How enjoyable should it be to spend time with another man? I’m not fond of the same sex; as long as being with you isn’t boring or torturous, that’s enough for me.”
Muniang glared at him, annoyed. This man was becoming ever more shameless!
These days, Tianniu had been recuperating at home, too injured to leave the bed, let alone go outdoors.
