Chapter 459 - 459 460 Begging You Master_1
Chapter 459: Chapter 460 Begging You, Master_1 Chapter 459: Chapter 460 Begging You, Master_1 Jin Yuanyuan had just blurted out her words when she realized her lapse in decorum, panic-stricken as she looked toward Yu Ze, only to see him maintaining his usual expressionless demeanor, seemingly uninterested in what kind of person he appeared to be.
Jin Yuanyuan glared resentfully at Qiao Muniang, her face beginning to turn a bashful shade of red. Too lazy to exchange pleasantries, she turned and ran out.
The maid hurriedly followed after her, and Li Dashi, not daring to lose track of her and face the consequences later, also hastily bid goodbye to Muniang and took off after them.
It was then that Muniang couldn’t help but burst into laughter, “This Miss Jin, I can’t tell if she’s truly naive or just pretending. It’s quite amusing to watch.”
Yu Ze had been worried that Muniang would be angered by Jin Yuanyuan’s behavior, but now, seeing her so nonchalant, he, instead, breathed a sigh of relief. He had been frightened by He Suxue’s incident before—had it not been for his persistent efforts, Muniang probably would have kicked him to the curb long ago.
Now, every time he saw a woman throwing herself at him, he couldn’t help but panic a little first.
But when he thought about it, he found his own paranoia laughable—how could Muniang be someone to take offense at such trifles? He felt like a man bitten by a snake, who then fears a well rope for years after.
Yu Ze took Muniang’s hand and led her to a side chamber, “Let’s not let that person in hereafter. It’s just unnecessary frustration for you. Aren’t you hungry? Let’s eat first.”
“Hmm!”
Meanwhile, Jin Yuanyuan, carrying a bellyful of fire as she stormed out, climbed directly onto the carriage and urged the coachman to whip the horses and depart in a whirl of dust, not even waiting for Li Dashi—most likely heading straight back to Qinghua City.
Li Dashi felt helpless and didn’t want to trouble Muniang and the others any further; today had been troublesome enough. So, with no other choice, he walked back on foot but thankfully found a bullock cart heading toward the town and hitched a ride after giving a few coppers.
The Magistrate of Qinghua City had just finished dealing with official business and returned to the mansion when a servant informed him that his daughter had come back. Eager to find out how her day had gone, he cheerily went to check in, only to find Jin Yuanyuan sobbing hysterically in her mother’s arms.
Seeing the scene, Jin Renjie’s face darkened, “What’s the matter? Who has bullied you?”
Jin Yuanyuan cried even harder. Lady Bai, indignant, said, “Yuanyuan said she’s been terribly wronged. She went to express her gratitude to the man who saved her life the other day, and he actually refused the gesture, especially his wife, who berated Yuanyuan! Can you believe that?”
A fire ignited within Jin Renjie as he heard this, “What audacity! Doesn’t he know whose daughter she is, to treat her like that? Yuanyuan went with all sincerity to give thanks, and he dares to snub her like this!”
Jin Yuanyuan, wiping her tears and sniffling, said, “I offered myself to him in marriage, and he had the nerve to say he didn’t even want to save me. His wife was worse, she said that since all the government officers have seen my clothes all wet, I should offer myself to each one in turn!”
With that, she burst into tears again.
Lady Bai angrily slammed the table, “This is outrageous! Indeed the words of a vulgar village woman, to speak such things!”
Lady Bai was fiercely protective of her daughter, blind to right or wrong, as if her own daughter publicly proposing herself in marriage to a man wasn’t a vulgarity in itself.
Listening to all this, Jin Renjie also grew furious. He was well aware of his daughter’s little crush; originally thinking that since his daughter liked the man, who was also an accomplished talent, recruiting him as a son-in-law could be a good match. Even though the man already had a wife, what would be better: marrying the daughter of a governor or a village girl?
Jin Renjie believed any man with a modicum of discernment would choose the former. Besides, given his daughter’s assets, how could she not match up to a mere village girl? His daughter had personally come forward with a proposal; that man should have eagerly accepted it with joy. Who would have expected this turn of events: not only was the man unaffected by his daughter’s intentions, but they were also ridiculed in the process!
Jin Renjie immediately raised his voice, “A man like that doesn’t deserve your affection; there’s no need for us to eagerly chase after someone who shows us the cold shoulder!”
Being an official, how could he tolerate such a slap in the face? His own daughter had been humiliated; wasn’t that the same as a blow to his own dignity?
But Jin Yuanyuan suddenly stood up with a “whoosh,” tears still in her eyes, and loudly declared, “I won’t! I like him! If you don’t let me marry him, I’d rather shave my head and become a nun!”
“You!” Jin Renjie was furious.
Madam Bai quickly stepped in and turned to Jin Yuanyuan, saying, “What’s all this quarreling for? Your father and I are only thinking of what’s best for you.”
“If you want what’s best for me, then let me marry him! I don’t care, I just want to marry him!” Jin Yuanyuan retorted stubbornly.
Madam Bai was at her wit’s end and helplessly looked at Jin Renjie, “Yuanyuan is so persistent about someone for once; can’t you think of something?”
Jin Renjie glared, “What can I think of? They don’t care that she’s the Magistrate’s daughter; are you suggesting I force him to marry her?!”
However, Madam Bai’s eyes lit up, suddenly saying, “I think that Yu Ze probably doesn’t want to marry Yuanyuan solely because he already has a wife.”
Madam Bai’s confidence was not unfounded; Jin Yuanyuan was highly sought after in Qinghua City. Despite her tyrannical and unreasonable temperament, she had a powerful father. None of the Qinghua City officials could outdo the Magistrate, and the merchants relied on the support of the officials. At the top of the food chain was her father, so who wouldn’t want to marry her?
She had also inquired about Yu Ze and found he was just an “idle” commoner. How could he not be tempted by such an offer?
“Right!” Jin Yuanyuan jumped up, “That woman is so annoying; Yu Ze must divorce her first!”
Madam Bai shook her head, “Given how Yu Ze treated you today, he most likely won’t divorce his wife. He’s obviously concerned about his reputation. Divorcing his humble wife to marry a woman from a noble family may sound glorious, but he’ll still face gossip behind his back, and living in such a remote and impoverished place, those voices of slander will be even louder.”
“So what do we do?” Jin Yuanyuan asked discontentedly.
“Just let that woman propose the divorce herself,” Madam Bai said with a smile.
“Her? She’d be willing to propose that? Yeah, right!”
But Madam Bai didn’t continue on this topic; instead, she looked at Jin Renjie and said, “I heard they came to Qinghua City last time to look at land, apparently for business purposes.”
Jin Renjie thought for a moment and said, “That seems right. The constable who saw them last time mentioned that they were running an embroidery business and a theater in Chatu Town. This time in Qinghua City, they’re looking to expand their operations.”
Upon hearing this, Madam Bai smiled, “Since they wish to do business under the watchful eyes of your excellency, doesn’t this make things more convenient for you to deal with them?”
Jin Renjie was surprised, “What do you mean by that?”
Madam Bai huffed, “They’ve just settled on the land, but haven’t they yet to obtain the operating permit for their store? This matter, don’t they have to beg your excellency for that?”
