Chapter 437: Chapter 434 Almost Got Hit_1 Chapter 437: Chapter 434 Almost Got Hit_1 “My son Dashu is sick again. Previously, we spent all our money on his illness. We thought he was getting better after seeing the doctor and taking good medicine to nourish his health, but unexpectedly, the illness has flared up again. I am just…” At this point, Chen himself couldn’t help but choke up.

Muniang hurriedly consoled him, before saying, “So it’s about that matter. If you’re coming to me to ask for silver, well, it’s not just that we know each other well; even for the sake of Yuhua’s reputation, I wouldn’t ignore it.”

Chen expressed his gratitude, “Lady, your compassion is such that I don’t even know what to say.”

Muniang pulled a face, “So, Chen, how much silver do you need?”

Her question carried a hint of probing. Muniang pretended she hadn’t heard Wang Yufang’s previous outrageous demand, letting Chen restate his request. If he quoted the same figure as before, Muniang guessed things might not go so smoothly.

Muniang was somewhat familiar with Dashu’s condition. Even if the medicinal ingredients were expensive, they should not cost that much. She didn’t consider the Chen family outsiders in her heart, but what she had seen of Wang Yufang today really was eye-opening. She didn’t like people treating her like a simpleton and swindling money from her. If the Chen family member acted the same as Wang Yufang, she would have to recognize that she had misjudged them.

Chen then said, “An additional twenty or thirty taels should be enough. I truly didn’t want to make another trip here, and seeing you, Lady, I feel quite ashamed.”

A smile finally appeared on Muniang’s face, “Since Chen has spoken, then I will give thirty taels more.”

Having said that, she sent Qingya to fetch the money from the accountant’s office.

After the Chen family member left Mei Garden, Wang Yufang learned that they had only gotten thirty taels and almost cursed right there in the street.

“Dad, why are you so thoughtless? Such a small sum isn’t even worth our trip here!” Wang Yufang said indignantly.

Chen glared at her, “What do you mean ‘came for nothing’? Are you that delicate? You can only make a trip for three or five hundred taels? I sell tofu every day and only earn a few hundred copper coins.”

“Dad, why are you scolding me? Am I doing this for myself? It’s all for Dashu’s sickness…” Wang Yufang now couldn’t stop talking about “Dashu’s sickness,” treating it like her best weapon.

But Chen was no longer willing to fall for it, cutting her off, “Stop talking about Dashu’s sickness! What else have you done for his illness aside from asking for money? Now is not the time for you to say these things. Go back quickly. Aren’t you embarrassed to make a scene in the middle of the street? Don’t you think Lady Yu is a fool. If she gave us thirty taels today, it was purely out of the last bit of respect for Yuhua. Do you think she’s an easy mark to give money without a second thought? Did you manage to outsmart her when you tried to play tough earlier?!”

Upon hearing this, Wang Yufang was taken aback. Qiao Muniang, looking so delicate and only about in her teens, gave off the impression of being astute. Truth be told, it wasn’t easy to swindle silver from her.

Still, deep inside, she felt some irritation. She had thought they could strike it rich with just one knock, but her dreams were swiftly shattered. Well, there would be other days. Didn’t the Chen family still have Chen Yuhua as a cash cow? They wouldn’t go bankrupt in any case!

Journey to the West had begun to successfully take the stage, and its effect was naturally not bad. After all, such a novel plot was accepted by the audience; even those who had resented the interruption of The Condor Heroes were now barely putting up with it.

Since it was already the third play, everyone had grown accustomed to the routine. Muniang decided to simply be the hands-off shopkeeper, especially since the recent pressing events with Chen Yuhua had left her exhausted.

Mrs. Lin looked at her daughter’s thinned face with heartache. Muniang had stayed at home for a few days, doing nothing but eating and sleeping, and only now was she regaining her spirits.

It was not until Madam Liu came over one day, saying she had found a suitable family for Qingmei and wanted Muniang to personally check it out, that Muniang asked Yu Ze to accompany her. Men are best at understanding other men, and she figured he could be useful.

“What kind of family is it?” Inside the carriage, Yu Ze played with Muniang’s fingers as he asked casually.

“According to Auntie, they run a grocery store in town. While not particularly wealthy, they live a stable life. The man is nineteen, has previously served as an attendant student in a wealthy household, and has read some books; he can even read and write.”

Muniang added, “I don’t particularly mind what their financial situation is, as long as they can live a decent life. The key is to see what the person’s character is like. After all, this is the family Qingmei is going to rely on for her lifetime, right?”

“Did you think the same way when you considered getting married?” Yu Ze suddenly asked, as he remembered that when he first came to visit, there were matchmakers at Muniang’s house, brought there by Mrs. Lin herself to introduce suitors to Muniang.

Muniang gave him a sidelong glance, “What good would having thoughts do? In the end, some shameless person ruined my reputation, so I had to accept reality.”

Yu Ze pinched her cheek, “That really did wrong you.”

Muniang giggled in response.

Shortly after reaching the town, they arrived at the doorstep of the family in question. Muniang and Yu Ze alighted from the carriage in succession, but no sooner had they descended than a fast horse came galloping from not far away, throwing the street into chaos as numerous vendors’ stalls were trampled under the horse’s hooves.

Muniang was the first to step down from the carriage, and seeing the horse charging straight toward her, she was at a loss, not knowing how to react. It was Yu Ze’s quick response that saved her, as he swiftly pulled Muniang into his arms and leapt to the side, barely evading the horse.

Muniang’s heart was still racing; for a moment there, she had thought she was going to die.

Looking up, however, the horse rider seemed to be completely indifferent, not slowing down in the slightest, as if he didn’t care whether he had hit someone or not.

Just as Muniang was about to curse at the rider, she saw that Yu Ze had already taken off with a cold expression, swiftly overtaking the horse with a few light touches of his feet, prompting exclamations of awe from the crowd.

The rider, realizing someone was chasing him, urged his horse to move even faster, but it was futile. Within moments, Yu Ze had caught up to him and with a kick, he sent the man tumbling off the horse. Yu Ze then landed on the horse’s back, grabbed the reins, and brought the animal’s mad dash to a halt.

The man, having been kicked off, was in so much pain he almost cried out for his parents. When he looked up and saw a stranger had attacked him, his anger flared, “Are you looking for trouble after stuffing yourself full?”

Yu Ze’s gaze grew colder, “You nearly hit my wife. Apologize and make amends!”
