Chapter 425: Chapter 426: Beg Me to Go On Stage_1 Chapter 425: Chapter 426: Beg Me to Go On Stage_1 “Everyone, hustle! All of you are dawdling as if you haven’t eaten. The first performance today is about to start—be careful not to hold everything up and cause trouble!” Nanny Zhang was hurriedly directing everyone to get to work faster.
There was only the time it takes to burn one stick of incense before the performance would begin, and guests were already trickling into the theater. But the theater was still not set up, which made Nanny Zhang anxious as can be. Why were they running so late today? If there were indeed a delay, Lady wouldn’t spare her the blame!
The stage was specially redesigned by Muniang, adopting the appearance of a modern drama theater, with a thick curtain covering the stage. Naturally, the curtain was drawn tightly closed before the performance, so even though the guests were all waiting in the lobby, they couldn’t see the hectic rush happening behind the curtain.
“Move that thing over there quickly, are the ropes on the pillars secured properly? Have you tied them tightly?”
“Don’t worry, I just tested it, and even I can hang from them without an issue, let alone Miss Chen!” a burly man responded with a chuckle.
Today, Chen Yuhua had another fight scene. To ensure it was spectacular, Muniang usually employed wirework for Little Dragon Girl’s action scenes—and Chen Yuhua was becoming increasingly proficient at it.
Guo Yuehua was distractedly setting up the stage decorations. Nanny Zhang cursed again, “What are you busily messing around with? Can’t you see we’re all in a fluster here? Get these moved inside quickly, don’t dawdle!”
Just then, Chen Yuhua came in, because she was to appear as soon as the curtain was raised. So she was there early to stand by, just in time to witness this scene and couldn’t help feeling a bit awkward.
Who wasn’t opportunistic? Right then, Nanny Zhang was naturally trying to ingratiate herself with Chen Yuhua, smiling and saying, “Miss Chen, you must be amused by this. These servants have no manners at all. I’m just disciplining them.”
Chen Yuhua repeatedly waved her hands, “No, no, I have nothing to laugh at. We all work for Lady, and each has their own duties. No one is special.”
On hearing this, Nanny Zhang felt much more comfortable. When Guo Yuehua was at the height of her popularity, her chin was practically lifted to the heavens!
Actually, Chen Yuhua’s remark wasn’t meant to comfort Nanny Zhang but to make Guo Yuehua feel better—at least to let her know she didn’t look down on her at all.
But Guo Yuehua clearly wasn’t grateful and shot Chen Yuhua a dark look; her gaze was as venomous as if she had spat poison, cursing to herself, ‘I’ll see how you can be smug in the future!’
Guo Yuehua picked up the items and took them backstage. Chen Yuhua was a bit unnerved by that look from Guo Yuehua; she knew Guo Yuehua didn’t like her, but those eyes had never held such malice before. Chen Yuhua inexplicably felt a flutter of panic.
Nanny Zhang didn’t have the time to flatter Chen Yuhua anymore as she was busy spinning around like a top. Glancing up, she caught a maid idling and felt a surge of irritation, “Xiangcao! What are you idling around for? Thinking there’s nothing to do here, are you?”
Xiangcao jumped in fright, having just taken a small break, and just her luck, Nanny Zhang noticed. She sighed inwardly at her bad luck and quickly apologized, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ll get right to work!”
Nanny Zhang barked, “Go to the kitchen in the back courtyard and check if the hawthorn soup has cooled down. Everyone’s waiting to drink it!”
Xiangcao hurriedly bowed, “Yes, I’ll bring it right away!”
Of course, this hawthorn soup was taught to them by Muniang. Though the weather had already turned to autumn, those laboring would always feel hot. The hawthorn soup was a treat from Muniang for the servants—cool, sour, and sweet to drink, quenching thirst and reducing heat, and everybody loved it.
Nanny Zhang watched as Xiangcao fled in disarray, yet she still cursed under her breath, “Not one of them is easy to deal with, truly vexing!”
Although things were a bit rushed, they still managed to get everything ready within the duration of one incense stick burning, and every person was prepared. Yuhua nodded to the servant boy standing by the backstage, and as the sound of a gong rang out, the stage curtains were slowly drawn aside, and the play began.
When Xiangcao arrived at the kitchen, a few servant girls had just pulled up a large jar of hawthorn soup from the well.
“Is this already cool?” Xiangcao hurriedly asked, fearful of any delay, lest Nanny Zhang berate her to death later.
“Sister Xiangcao, it’s ready and tastes great; you can serve it now,” one of the servants replied.
“Alright then, let me grab a bowl,” Xiangcao responded and turned to rush into the kitchen to get the bowls.
Guo Yuehua appeared out of nowhere, eyeing the jar of hawthorn soup with an intriguing glint in her eyes.
“What are you standing around for? Everyone’s waiting outside, aren’t you going to help carry it?” one of the servant girls, irritated by Guo Yuehua’s standstill like a spoiled lady, had her temper kindled.
Guo Yuehua, who didn’t regard such a servant in any capacity, simply rolled her eyes and bypassed her into the kitchen.
That servant girl was so furious she exclaimed, “What’s she putting on airs for all day long? Just looking at her is infuriating!”
“Just bear with it; did you really expect her to do any work? Let’s carry it ourselves,” another servant girl commented discontentedly.
Upon entering the kitchen, Guo Yuehua saw Xiangcao with an armful of bowls ready to ladle out the soup. Guo Yuehua directly intercepted her, “Did you forget what Dahu said yesterday? He asked you to use bigger bowls, didn’t he? He’s a big guy, these small bowls you’ve picked won’t be enough for him to drink from.”
Xiangcao paused, “I did forget, but how come you remember so clearly?”
“I just suddenly recalled it too. You’d better switch to larger bowls; he has a quick temper, and it wouldn’t be good to offend him,” Guo Yuehua advised.
Considering Guo Yuehua’s words made sense, and given that Dahu was a large and intimidating figure with a rather unpleasant temper, Xiangcao indeed didn’t dare to cross him, so she turned around and took a larger bowl to fill.
After filling the bowls with hawthorn soup, Xiangcao remembered that she had left the tray in the kitchen and quickly went back to get it. Guo Yuehua, who had slipped away earlier, now surreptitiously returned. Seeing that no one was around, she hastily poured a packet of powdered medicine from her sleeve into one of the large bowls of hawthorn soup, and the powder quickly settled into the liquid.
Then, Guo Yuehua swiftly hid to the side. Oblivious to the opportunity she had presented to someone during her brief absence, Xiangcao hurriedly carried the hawthorn soup out.
With a mocking smile curling her lips, Guo Yuehua thought to herself, I want to see what happens when Yuhua has an incident. Qiao Muniang, will you come begging me to perform on stage!
