Chapter 376: Chapter 377 Are you deceiving me?_1 Chapter 376: Chapter 377 Are you deceiving me?_1 Madam Zhao gritted her teeth and cursed, “Don’t be fooled by this pair of dogs! You’re simply quibbling now. Who knows whether she’s just pretending to be pitiful, or whether she really had an affair?!”

Zeng Gang mocked with a derisive laugh, “Then on what evidence do you base your accusation that she had an affair? On what grounds do you claim she’s feigning sorrow now?”

Madam Zhao was momentarily left speechless.

Zeng Gang continued to sneer, “I won’t say anything else. Just take Qinghe and Qiao Yuanzhen’s character and have everyone weigh in—who should be believed?!”

The truth was already laid bare for all to see; Qiao Yuanzhen’s character had long been tainted by the label of “traitor.”

The villagers had a clear understanding in their hearts, and they quickly vindicated Qinghe, “That’s right! The Qiao family did Qinghe wrong. We really can’t speak highly of Qiao Yuanzhen’s character. Now that the lady has finally managed to step out of the gloom, although remarriage may not be something glorious, she doesn’t deserve to be cursed like that. Madam Zhao, you have gone too far.”

With one leading the way, others started to join in the clamor, pointing fingers at the Qiao family’s misdeeds.

Madam Zhao, with a face red and a neck thick with rage, wanted to curse but dared not say another word; otherwise, everyone would unite to attack her. She could only tuck in her neck and skulk away.

The villagers dispersed in twos and threes, and it was only then that Zeng Gang hurried to see how Qinghe was doing, “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault for dragging you into this.” If her remarriage had not been to him, she wouldn’t have had to suffer such an indignity.

Qinghe shook her head, “Thank you, but I don’t feel aggrieved.” Because you’re there to protect me. However, Qinghe was too embarrassed to speak the latter part aloud.

Muniang broke into a smile, “What’s all this thanking about? After all, you’ll be husband and wife soon.”

With that comment, the “couple” both blushed fiercely.

The renovation work at Mei Garden was also complete. These days they were just setting up various things inside, and the actors were quickly getting into their roles, taking advantage of the last few days to rehearse vigorously.

Muniang arrived at Mei Garden early as usual today, to see how their rehearsal was progressing, especially since the theater would be officially reopening in three days.

But as soon as Muniang walked in, the actors who had been rehearsing on the stage suddenly became awkward, looking at each other, and Muniang joked, “What’s the matter? Don’t you recognize me after just one day?”

Zhong Yulang’s expression was somewhat embarrassed; he bit his lip before coming down, “Lady, I…”

Muniang felt a sudden unease in her heart. She found it strange that Zhong Yulang, normally so calm, had become so serious out of the blue; it probably wasn’t anything simple.

“What’s the matter, say it!”

Zhong Yulang hung his head and said, “The contract we signed before is invalid.”

“What do you mean?” Muniang’s tone became fierce.

“It means that Mei Garden has nothing to do with you, if it’s none of your business, scram!” A rough voice came from behind.

Muniang subconsciously turned around, only to see a man as fat as a pig, with a bulging belly, waddling in, his mouth full of yellow teeth as he smiled disgustingly.

Muniang frowned and asked, “Who is this?”

“Me? I am the owner of Mei Garden! The contract you previously signed with Zhong Yulang is worthless. He is just a servant under me, not even free to act on his own, naturally, he has no right to sign any contracts on my behalf. So, get back to where you came from, and don’t mess with my turf!” Mrs. Luo spoke arrogantly, with the air of a bandit.

Muniang’s eyes widened in anger.

She had already guessed that there was someone else behind Mei Garden, but she’d thought the hidden owner was too busy, so Zhong Yulang was managing it on his behalf. After all, when she had signed the contract with Dongxing Building, wasn’t it also with Manager Qian?

But what she didn’t expect was that Zhong Yulang turned out to be a servant without any status. What then was the meaning of all he had done? Was he deceiving her?!

“Zhong Yulang, you’d better explain clearly what’s going on,” Muniang said harshly.

The actors had not seen Muniang lose her temper before, and they were startled into a shiver. They had always seen her nice and amiable and thought she was good-natured, only now did they realize she was not incapable of anger, she just hadn’t shown it.

Zhong Yulang’s face was filled with shame: “I’m sorry, I, I…” He looked up at Mrs. Luo, who was arrogantly pleased with himself, and couldn’t utter a single word.

He never really intended to deceive Muniang, he just didn’t want outsiders to see his abject state, especially his status as a servant. So even after Muniang misunderstood that he had to sell his body for money, he didn’t argue on his own behalf.

What he hadn’t expected was that Mrs. Luo would stoop so low, deliberately letting him sign the contract. Now that Muniang had invested so much money and effort into Mei Garden, and just as she was about to reap the rewards, Mrs. Luo, wanting to monopolize the profits, just tossed out that the contract was invalid!

Muniang glared at Zhong Yulang, then confronted Mrs. Luo, “Why are you only coming out to tell me this now? Don’t tell me you just found out your servant made decisions on his own!”

Muniang’s words “your servant” stabbed Zhong Yulang’s heart. He knew she had already lumped him in with Mrs. Luo’s people, thinking he was conspiring with Mrs. Luo to cheat her. Yet, when he heard such words, he still felt his face burning with shame.

Mrs. Luo laughed triumphantly, “So what if I intentionally waited until now to tell you? Are you upset? If it’s that bad, you can always complain to the County Chief. I hear you’ve got some connections with the Local County Official. Let’s see if he can make a decision for you. Hahaha.”

Muniang clenched her teeth, a sinister look flashing in her eyes, “I spent money and effort to renovate Mei Garden, and now with a single declaration of ‘contract invalid,’ you think you can kick me out? You’ve played a good game indeed.”

The menance in Muniang’s demeanor suddenly intensified, frightening even Mrs. Luo, who after all was a bandit by trade. He figured she was just a woman, after all, what could she possibly do? So he continued with no restraint, “Discontented? Let me tell you! There’s no one in Chatu Town who dares to defy me, Mrs. Luo! Do you know what kind of people I used to mix with? If you had any sense, you’d roll out of here quietly. Otherwise, I’ll have you and your whole family killed without discussion!”

Mrs. Luo had thought that such threats would at least send this woman running scared, if not utterly terrified, but surprisingly, Muniang showed no panic at all. Instead, she curled her lips into a chilling smile, “Fine, fine indeed. It’s just too bad, you best not regret offending me today.”
