Chapter 374: Chapter 375: Your Tears_1 Chapter 374: Chapter 375: Your Tears_1 “Wrap it up quickly before you lose any more blood!” Qinghe chided angrily.
Muniang hurriedly called out to the outside, “Qian, go get the gauze and golden sore medicine!”
“Yes.”
In no time at all, the gauze was brought over, and Qinghe immediately began to bandage the wound. Zeng Gang watched every move Qinghe made, his eyes nearly oozing adoration, as if the knife cut on his body didn’t hurt at all.
Muniang watched Zeng Gang’s foolish expression and thought back to his resolute demeanor just now, laughing secretly to herself. It was hard to tell, but when Zeng Gang was pushed into a corner, he was ready to jump over the wall – typically shy about matters of the heart, now he acted bolder than anyone once he got serious. Look at that attitude; it was practically a forced marriage scene.
If she had known that being a bit more assertive would have done the trick, they should have resolved this quickly and decisively. Delaying until now was just his bad luck. However, now that Qinghe had finally accepted, it was still good news.
Zeng Gang, seeing Muniang’s teasing smile, knew what she was laughing at, and couldn’t help but feel his face burn with embarrassment. He had acted rashly out of desperation, without a thought in his head. If asked to do it again, he really didn’t know if he could repeat such a forceful act.
“Alright, let the clothes out later to cover the wound. Don’t let others see and laugh at you,” Qinghe said softly.
Zeng Gang scratched his head, “Let them laugh. It doesn’t matter to me.” His future wife had accepted him; he didn’t mind the ridicule of a few young men. It made him feel content.
Qinghe glared at him without amusement: “It matters to me!”
Zeng Gang remembered that Qinghe was a woman after all, with naturally thinner skin than rough men like him, so he quickly replied, “Alright, alright, what you say goes.”
Qinghe couldn’t help but burst into a soft chuckle, just as Xi’er woke up. Instead of crying out for her mother, she persisted in calling, “Uncle Zeng, Uncle Zeng.”
Muniang said with amusement, “Who was it that worried Xi’er would cry for her mother when she woke up?”
Qinghe’s face darkened, “How come this child doesn’t miss her mother at all?”
Zeng Gang was pleased and scooped up Xi’er, “Uncle is here. Did Xi’er sleep well?”
Xi’er smiled broadly, “Will Uncle become Xi’er’s daddy? Xi’er would like Uncle to be her daddy. Then Xi’er would have a daddy too.”
“Do you like that idea? Uncle likes it too,” Zeng Gang laughed heartily.
Qinghe’s heart warmed. She had always tried to give Xi’er all her love to make up for the absence of her father, but now she realized that no matter what, she couldn’t completely fill that void herself. Despite everything they’d gone through, heaven had given her a good man to make up for it, and perhaps it was time for her to truly cherish that.
Muniang and Qinghe brought out dishes, one by one, and the completion-of-work banquet had already begun. A large group crowded around the table, eating merrily.
Yu Ze didn’t put on any airs and instead drank with everyone, his usually aloof manner significantly softened for the occasion.
The meal was enjoyed by all, most importantly, it facilitated the matchmaking of a fine couple, creating an atmosphere of exceptional merriment.
Early next morning, Zeng Gang immediately hurried to the Li Family to ask for Qinghe’s hand in marriage, as if afraid a moment’s delay would lose him the opportunity. After the incident with Qiao Yuanzhen, Li Cheng had raised his standards for a brother-in-law and wanted to consider it further.
However, Muniang said, “Zeng Gang has already sworn a blood oath, promising to genuinely care for Qinghe and Xi’er for his entire life.”
Upon hearing this, Li Cheng was startled: “A blood oath?”
Zeng Gang rolled up his sleeve, showing the wound to Li Cheng: “Chengzi, since I’ve made an oath, I naturally won’t violate it by even a hair’s breadth. I will never let down Qinghe in this lifetime and will treat Xi’er as my own. Please, agree to my proposal.”
Li Cheng pursed his lips, glanced at Qinghe who stood beside him, silent, but the look in her eyes clearly showed she had already agreed.
“Before she married, my sister was the finest girl in Tupo Village—many men came to ask for her hand. If it were before, even if you came to propose, I wouldn’t think much of it. But now, she is after all a discarded woman, a mother too. With your prospects, you could easily find someone better,” Li Cheng said, not out of belittlement for Qinghe, but to test Zeng Gang’s true intentions.
“In my eyes, Zeng Gang’s, Qinghe is the best,” Zeng Gang declared firmly, his gaze resolute, showing his sincerity.
Only then did Li Cheng nod with relief: “You’d better remember what you said today. If you ever dare to fail Qinghe, forget about whether the heavens will forgive you, I, Li Cheng, will be the first to not let you off the hook!”
Zeng Gang felt a surge of joy in his heart: “Thank you, brother!”
Li Cheng laughed and scolded, “Your tongue sure turns quickly!” He certainly knew what kind of person Zeng Gang was, having interacted with him on many occasions. It wasn’t just now—if Zeng Gang had proposed back when Qinghe was still unmarried, Li Cheng would have considered him a suitable match.
The repeated tests were actually driven by the fear instilled by Qiao Yuanzhen; his sister nearly lost her lifetime of happiness because of a scoundrel. If another one turned up, Qinghe’s life would be ruined. Thankfully, Zeng Gang was a man of good standing; such a man would never let his sister suffer much.
The news of Li Qinghe’s impending second marriage spread through the village like wildfire, immediately sparking discussions.
“Hey, have you heard? Li Qinghe is getting remarried, to a craftsman from the town known for his exceptional skills. He comes from a good background, young and single too!”
“Really? She’s hit the jackpot then, finding such a favorable match willing to marry a woman with a child, who’s been discarded!”
“No kidding! That craftsman is the very one who repaired the Qiao family’s house, an impressive figure with fine skills. I’ve heard that the big families from the prefectural city specifically request his services for their estates. Qinghe is really lucky. After the Qiao family drove her out so tragically, I thought her life was over, but who knew she’d turn around and find someone even better.”
“Sigh, indeed, some people are just born under a lucky star. No matter who she marries, it’s always someone good. Meanwhile, my family’s pure and innocent daughter might end up marrying a penniless farmer and endure hardship.”
When the news reached the Qiao family, Madam Zhao exploded: “What an unashamed hussy! Only a year since her divorce and she’s already thinking of remarrying. I always said she wasn’t the demure type! She claimed there was nothing between her and that craftsman, but look at them getting married now. I bet they were fooling around together all along!”
Upon hearing the news, Qiao Yuanzhen merely sneered, “It seems everything is going perfectly for you. Let’s see how long you can keep those smiles. There will come a time when you’ll be the ones crying!”
