Chapter 279 - 279 280 Crafty Tricks_1
Chapter 279: Chapter 280 Crafty Tricks_1 Chapter 279: Chapter 280 Crafty Tricks_1 “What?” Li Cheng was taken aback, standing there dumbfounded, while Muniang looked at Yu Ze, just as clueless about whatever devilish scheme he was cooking up.
Yu Ze’s lips curled into a smile, “In these times, things are never quite peaceful, are they? One could, unfortunately, encounter bandits or thieves in a moment of carelessness and there goes the silver.”
Muniang was startled, thinking how darkly crafty her husband could be. But she liked it!
“So when are we planning to steal it?” she asked.
“Let them be smug for a day. Tomorrow, when the silver disappears, their despair will be even greater.”
Muniang gave a thumbs up: “Brilliant!”
Yu Ze laughed wryly, all this trouble just to get married sooner! If Qinghe’s issue couldn’t be resolved neatly, who knows when they would return to the Capital? And here he was, the Marshal of the Nation, stooping to thievery for the sake of his bride. How embarrassing would it be if word got out!
Yu Ze clenched his teeth. What was embarrassment compared to marrying a wife? The biggest task now was to take a bride, everything else was secondary! Besides, he certainly couldn’t be the one to steal. Weren’t those Hidden Guards he was feeding supposed to earn their keep?
The Hidden Guards wiped away their tears in bitterness: We are, after all, the elite assassins of the Daqian Dynasty. Would it not be a disgrace to be known for thievery and burglary?
“Is this really feasible?” Li Cheng asked, hesitant, “What if we get caught? Wouldn’t we end up losing more than the chickens we tried to steal?”
“No worries, it will definitely work. You all head back first, and tomorrow we’ll have our silver back. As for Qinghe, let’s not mention anything to her, we don’t want her overthinking.”
If the Hidden Guards couldn’t handle even this much, they might as well commit suicide as their penance.
That evening, a Hidden Guard who had been sent to gather intelligence came to report to Yu Ze: “Qiao Yuanzhen hasn’t handed the silver over to his elders. Instead, he has taken it himself, locked four hundred taels in a small cabinet, and probably plans to spend the remaining hundred taels tomorrow, which he hasn’t locked away.”
Yu Ze had expected as much. Given Qiao Yuanzhen’s nature, he’d naturally not trust others with the money. The elders wouldn’t dare to even breathe heavily in his presence, let alone ask for money. Having been repressed for so long, he was all set to show off as soon as he had the money.
Muniang nudged Yu Ze with her elbow and said with a mischievous smile, “Isn’t this perfect for splitting into two groups, one to steal and one to rob? A comprehensive onslaught of natural and man-made disasters, how splendid is that?”
Yu Ze, somewhat uncertain, said, “But wouldn’t that be too conspicuous? Anyone with eyes could see that the Qiao family is suffering too much bad luck for these things to happen at the same time.”
Muniang huffed, “Then we’ll just go with the flow.”
Yu Ze raised an eyebrow, clearly confused. Muniang whispered a few cunning words into his ear, causing Yu Ze to flick her forehead, “You have too many tricks up your sleeve.”
“Perhaps it’s because I’m too clever,” Muniang boasted.
The Hidden Guard, seeing that the couple was getting affectionate, tactfully said, “Then I shall take my leave first.”
Yu Ze nodded, “Act on Lady’s instructions tomorrow—split into two groups. Make sure your disguises are convincing and don’t screw it up.”
“Yes!” The Hidden Guard bowed and promptly climbed out the window.
Once they were alone, Yu Ze drew Muniang closer by the waist, “My dear, now that Qinghe has given birth, can we return to the Capital in peace?”
“I’m thinking the same thing, but should I bring my mother along? She’s very frail and surely wouldn’t endure the lengthy journey. Now, she gets tired after a bit of activity despite having been recuperated for quite some time. What if she falls ill again due to the arduous travel?” Muniang sighed.
Yu Ze’s brow furrowed, “Well then, how about letting mother rest in Tupo Village? We’ll go to the Capital City and come back quickly. After all, the maids and servants are here to take care of her, and Li Cheng’s family visits often—they’ll surely help look after her.”
Muniang, worriedly asked, “Will you really go early and come back early?”
“Don’t you trust me? I’ve said that I’ll follow your wishes. I don’t want to stay in the Capital City any longer than necessary. If you want to continue developing your business in Tupo Village, I certainly won’t stop you. My only request is that you don’t leave me.”
Touched, Muniang wrapped her arms around Yu Ze’s waist and snuggled into his embrace, “Why are you so good to me?”
“Now you realize I’m good to you? Before, you were so fierce to me,” Yu Ze complained with a hint of grievance, yet inwardly he was delighted.
Muniang snuggled deeper into Yu Ze’s arms, her small head restlessly nudging against him as she said, muffled, “You deserved it.”
However, Yu Ze suddenly fell silent. After waiting quite some time without hearing a sound, Muniang looked up in surprise only to see Yu Ze’s face flushed and his expression stiffened significantly.
Perplexed, Muniang thought, “Even if he’s feeling ashamed about the past incident with He Suxue, surely it shouldn’t be this intense.”
To her surprise, she heard Yu Ze’s hoarse voice, “Wife, can’t we hasten our wedding night?” Just being nestled in his arms for a moment had overwhelmed him; he had had enough of the constant torment.
Muniang was stunned, and seeing his state, she nearly wanted to swear. Was this embarrassment? It was lust!
“Get out!” Muniang, fuming and puffing up her cheeks, almost fell for his act. There was always some romance-killing moment like this!
With a look of aggrieved longing, Yu Ze glanced at Muniang before reluctantly getting up and heading out to take a cold shower.
Muniang rolled her eyes to herself, “What a love beast! Just a hug and he reacts. He can forget about touching her again next time!”
The next day, Muniang finally slept in. It was mostly because Qinghe’s child had been born, and she felt relieved. Now she could finally sleep peacefully, so by the time she woke up, the sun was already high in the sky.
After a quick wash and brush, she stepped outside and stretched luxuriantly, only to see Yu Ze just returning to the courtyard.
“Finally awake?” Yu Ze teased.
Muniang didn’t respond to the mockery in his words, just rolled her eyes, “Plenty of sleep is beneficial to one’s health!”
Yu Ze couldn’t help but laugh, “Indeed, you look very healthy.”
Muniang clearly caught the sarcasm but couldn’t be bothered to respond and simply asked, “How are things going with the Hidden Guards?” Since he was coming from outside, most likely there was news from the Hidden Guard.
“What they needed to rob, they’ve robbed; what they needed to steal, they’ve stolen. Qiao Yuanzhen is probably on his way home being carried by others as we speak, and the Qiao family must’ve realized by now that there’s been a thief.”
Yu Ze made sure to make the scene at the Qiao family appear genuine; you could say he directed the Hidden Guard to turn the place upside-down. Everything was thrown into disarray. They would’ve noticed the silver missing the moment they woke up. By now, they must be wailing like banshees.
