Chapter 753: Chapter 753: Losing Face While Dividing Money (2)_1
This day, Mo Yan stayed in the small room next to the kitchen, cradling a book as she warmed herself around the brazier when Tang Xin entered with two ledgers in hand, "Sister Yanyan, here are the accounts I just reconciled. Could you see if there are any issues?"
"Hmm, let me take a look," Mo Yan said as she put down her letter and reached for the ledgers. Her fingertips unintentionally touched Tang Xin’s hand, which felt ice-cold, and she frowned, "It’s so cold; don’t you have a fire going?"
The girl was economizing on charcoal expenditure due to the recent uptick in usage. During the day, she’d work over the ledgers, and at night, sleep without kindling her room’s brazier. After being admonished about this several times, she still didn’t comply. In such chilly weather, what if she fell ill from the cold!
"I, I forgot!" Tang Xin, with a flushed face, awkwardly retracted her hand, seeing Mo Yan’s disbelieving face, she quickly added, "I really did forget, my hands are always cold in winter, but it’s really not cold at all, truly!"
Upon hearing this, Mo Yan’s brows furrowed even tighter. She put down the ledger and asked Tang Xin to sit down while she checked her pulse.
Every time Mo Yan delivered herbs to Doctor Du, she would stay for several moments and learn how to feel the pulse from him. Being sharp-minded and willing to diligently learn, she picked up a smattering of knowledge in two months. She could diagnose simple conditions, albeit not with great precision. Even so, she had impressed Doctor Du tremendously, who proclaimed she had a gift, and not attending medical school would be a waste of talent.
After a while, Mo Yan withdrew her hand and said to the somewhat anxious Tang Xin, "Your pulse indicates stagnation and an aversion to cold, clear signs of a cold constitution. If you don’t seek treatment soon, you’ll suffer in the future!"
Tang Xin held Mo Yan in high esteem. Upon hearing this, her face turned pale, and she shivered as she asked, "S, Sister Yanyan, is it, is it serious?"
Seeing she had frightened the young girl, Mo Yan quickly reassured, "Don’t worry, having a cold constitution is not a major problem. You’re still young, just two years of treatment and you’ll be fine! But if left untreated, you might experience painful menses and difficulty conceiving in the future, which can be severe!"
Tang Xin would turn twelve the following year, and she had some understanding of women’s issues. At first, the mention of difficult menses made her blush, but upon hearing about potential reproductive complications, her face turned as red as if it might bleed.
Yet, as it pertained to her future wellbeing, Tang Xin, despite her shyness, pressed on urgently, "Sister Yanyan, can it really be treated?"
"Yes!" Mo Yan nodded with certainty, "However, my medical skills are not yet refined, and I don’t know how to prescribe treatments. We’ll need my teacher to take a look at you first. I’ll take you to see him in a couple of days."
"Uh-huh, thank you, Sister Yanyan!" Tang Xin expressed her gratitude with thanks.
Mo Yan smiled and shook her head, "We are family, no need for such formalities."
Tang Xin smiled, pursed her lips, and said nothing, but her heart felt warm and content.
Mo Yan picked up the ledgers and started reviewing them. She noticed the handwriting wasn’t particularly beautiful but was clear and obviously done with care, which made her nod and continue reading.
Of the two ledgers, one recorded the labor points of villagers involved in the greenhouse vegetable cultivation, and the other tracked the greenhouse’s daily expenses and revenue from vegetable sales. After deducting the costs of maintaining the greenhouse, the remaining amount was the profit, which would be distributed based on the villagers’ labor points.
Initially, the plan was to settle accounts once a month, but as the villagers struggled with their daily lives and saw that the greenhouse vegetables were indeed profitable, they were eager to see real money. Though they didn’t voice their thoughts, Mo Yan understood their feelings and then changed it to fortnightly settlements. It was somewhat more troublesome but not a big issue.
The greenhouse vegetables hit the market on the fifth of November, and in just eleven days of the first half of the month, they sold for seven hundred and forty taels and five qian of silver. After deducting two taels of silver for greenhouse maintenance, the remaining seven hundred and thirty-eight taels and five qian of silver was to be distributed among thirty-six households (including the Mo Family).
