Chapter 1272: Chapter 399 Shariputra, Grace and Love
Xue Tuanzi’s words made Mo Yan even less willing to accept the inconspicuous little wooden box that Master Du Jie had given her. However, Master Du Jie seemed to ignore her refusal and stubbornly stretched out his hand holding the small wooden box before her, unwilling to take it back no matter what she said.
"Yanyan, this old monk has his reasons. If he’s giving you something, it must be significant. Just take it!" Seeing Mo Yan resolutely refusing to accept it, Xue Tuanzi was nervously pacing in the Ancient Jade Space, wishing it could jump out and accept it itself: "This could very well be our opportunity. You should take the old monk’s item, and find an opportunity to return it in the future."
Although it couldn’t see exactly what was inside the box, it could feel that whatever was inside was extremely important to it, and it would certainly regret it deeply if it missed this chance.
The persuasion from Xue Tuanzi put Mo Yan in quite a dilemma. To be honest, she was simply too timid; she was worried that if she accepted the wooden box from Du Jie, she would owe him a favor, and one day she might have to pay a steep price to repay it.
With the Ancient Jade Space in her hand, even though the space was against the norm, she had never been proud of it. She had always seen herself as an ordinary person, doing what she could to protect those she wanted to protect. She dared not contemplate anything beyond that, fearing the disappointment of not being able to accomplish it.
Seemingly understanding Mo Yan’s inner struggle, Master Du Jie’s expression remained unchanged, and his voice was still calm, "This item only fulfills its purpose in the Benefactor’s hands. In the possession of others, it is nothing but a lifeless object. The Benefactor should take it without concern."
Mo Yan, feeling exposed, blushed slightly and after much hesitation, ultimately succumbed to Master Du Jie’s insistence and Xue Tuanzi’s persuasion, accepting the small wooden box with seriousness.
It’s strange to say, but although the small wooden box seemed utterly ordinary, the cool temperature it gave off to the touch was completely different from that of a normal wooden box. A faint fragrance emitted from the box was so enticing that Mo Yan thought she was mistaken. She brought the box closer and sniffed, discovering indeed that the fragrance emanated from the wooden box itself.
The fragrance was peculiar, unlike anything she knew. The box alone was this mysterious, so the contents must be even more extraordinary. Curiosity got the better of Mo Yan, and she couldn’t help but ask, "Master Du Jie, may I know what is inside this box?"
"The Benefactor will know once it is opened after returning," responded Master Du Jie without clarifying, but it seemed as though he had settled a concern. The aura surrounding him became increasingly faint, as if he would disperse with the wind at any moment, ascending to immortality in a way that gave Mo Yan an ominous premonition.
By the time Mo Yan wanted to speak again, Master Du Jie had turned and returned to his meditation room, slowly closing the door behind him. It appeared that what he had intended to do was simply to hand the small wooden box to Mo Yan.
With mixed feelings, Mo Yan walked out and, to her surprise, encountered Liaokong, who had not left. Quickly, she put away the small wooden box and greeted him with a bow.
Liaokong, noticing the tucked away small wooden box, became unexpectedly serene and said seriously, "If it were not for the Benefactor’s unsevered worldly ties, entering our Buddhist order would surely bring great fortune."
The corner of Mo Yan’s lips twitched slightly. Did that mean she had the potential to become a nun? Unsure of how to respond, she gave a dry laugh and chose to remain silent.
Liaokong laughed as well and couldn’t resist advising, "The Benefactor will face a trial in the near future. Although it will be more startling than dangerous, the Benefactor must still be very careful to guard against the lethal power of rumors."
Mo Yan’s heart chilled, and she expressed her gratitude seriously, "This believer thanks the Abbot for the reminder."
Having no reason to deceive her, and since he mentioned that she would face a trial without telling her how to avoid it, that meant the trial was inevitable and unavoidable.
After parting with Liaokong, Mo Yan was led by the Little Novice Monk to the meditation room assigned to her; the meditation rooms for others were located next door.
Hearing laughter and cheerful voices from one of the rooms, Mo Yan paused for a moment. Looking at the small wooden box in her hand, she did not enter but went straight back to her own meditation room.
As Xiao Ruiyuan opened his door after hearing familiar footsteps outside, he heard the sound of a door closing from the second room next door. Hesitating for a moment, he ultimately decided not to knock.
Mo Yan locked her door; at Xue Tuanzi’s urging, she carefully opened the dusty small wooden box, only to find several golden spherical grains inside. There were eight of them, each the size of a pigeon’s egg, very light in weight, surely not gold nor any other known metal or mineral.
