Chapter 1153: Chapter 367 Continuation? Jealousy
Mo Yan found Xin Er still sleeping when she arrived. Xin Er’s upper eyelids were swollen, with dark circles underneath, and her cheeks bore the dried tracks of tears, evidently from crying for a long time the previous night before finally falling asleep.
Sitting by the bed, Mo Yan watched her sister’s brow furrowed even in sleep, guessing what could have happened. The girl was not unreasonable or naive, and for her to quarrel with their father and be so distressed was clearly no trivial matter.
It was said that after Zhenzhen came back, she whispered something to her, and she ran back to her room in tears. When she came out again, she was at odds with her father, which suggested that it must have been something her father did that so upset Xin Er, but what could it be?
While Mo Yan was pondering, the restless Xin Er seemed to sense something and opened her eyes. Seeing her sister right in front of her, as if spotting a pillar of support, she cried out "Sis" with excitement and threw herself into her sister’s arms, sobbing.
"Sis, why did you only come back now? I, I waited for you all night long." Xin Er said between sobs, and nobody knew how she had made it through the night before.
Mo Yan wanted to say that she had written a letter the night before saying she wouldn’t be back, but seeing Xin Er’s sad and helpless look, she didn’t bring it up, instead she comforted her gently, patting her shoulder, "If you keep crying, you won’t be pretty anymore. Your sister is right here in front of you now, tell me whatever grievances you have."
Xin Er nodded through her tears, about to speak but unsure how to begin. After hesitating for a moment, she finally asked softly, "If dad wants to find us a stepmother, sis, what would you do?"
Upon hearing this, Mo Yan understood what was troubling the girl. Though she didn’t know exactly what had occurred the day before to provoke such a question from her sister, it didn’t prevent her from consoling Xin Er, who was stuck in her own thoughts.
"Whether dad finds a stepmother or not is really not our business! Dad has had a hard time raising the three of us these years, and before long I’ll be getting married, you are nearing the age for talking about marriage, and Zhenzhen will have her own family. When that time comes, dad will be left all alone. Could you really bear to see him solitary, without even someone to share his meals with?"
Seeing Xin Er about to speak, Mo Yan knew what she wanted to say by the look on her face and continued in the same vein, "Maybe you’ll say we can often visit him later, and Zhenzhen can live with dad, but have you considered whether, once we’re in our husbands’ homes, we can do as we please and come back whenever we want? And what about Zhenzhen? He will have his own career and family to think about, and how much energy could he spare for dad? How many times a year could he keep dad company to have meals, drink tea, or play chess?"
Seeing Xin Er cast her eyes down in silence, deeply contemplating, Mo Yan touched her head and sighed, "If dad were to remarry someday, I wouldn’t object as long as that person could make him happy and accompany him into old age. I would only be glad and grateful."
Life is but a few decades long, normally spent in the company of parents during youth, of a spouse and children when grown, and in old age, of a lifelong companion to chat with, no matter if times are good or bad, at least there is always someone by one’s side, a sense of solace within the heart.
Our father was orphaned at a young age and aside from scheming, Lao Mo’s House provided no familial care. After finally marrying and having children, his wife eloped with someone else, leaving him to raise us three on his own.
We will eventually grow up and each go our own ways, pursuing our own families and dreams, and for most of the following decades, our father will be alone. How can such a life be summed up by the mere word ’loneliness’? Mo Yan truly wished for our father to have a companion, even if just to see him comfortably through his later years.
Xin Er furrowed her brow, still struggling to accept it, "But what if she treats us badly? Like Tang Xin’s stepmother, she’s so wicked. If it weren’t for us, Tang Xin might have been tormented to death by her stepmother."
Mo Yan couldn’t help but laugh, teasingly chided the puzzled Xin Er, "Would you compare our father to Tang Xin’s, and not fear that he would find out?"
Tang Xin’s stepmother dared to treat her so because her father allowed it, right? In this era where the husband’s word is law, if Honest Tang showed the courage a husband should have and properly protected Tang Xin, even if the stepmother had given birth to a son, she would at most dare to show Tang Xin a cold face and secretly skimp on her meals. If she went too far, Honest Tang would have dismissed her long ago. Ultimately, the problem lies with Honest Tang himself.
