Chapter 987: Inspired greatly

Doctors are always busy and their schedules are tight. Every minute of learning time has to be squeezed out.

No one wants to see people dallying at a conference.

Usually, surgeons stand at the operating table for several hours at a time, and standing too long can make anyone irritable. Watching a long surgery demonstration also makes peers extremely uncomfortable psychologically.

It is conceivable that no audience stayed for that lecture, a consequence entirely due to the presenter’s own fault, having completely disregarded the feelings of their peers.

Doctor Shi finished telling this story. The people from the Hepatobiliary Surgery department felt a bit uneasy.

Initially, they thought that broadcasting a surgery live would suffice, but now it seems that a perfunctory effort could have unimaginable consequences.

"Dr. Tao, what do you think?" Director Tang turned to ask his key subordinate.

While listening to General Surgery Department Two, Tao Zhijie’s delicate brows occasionally furrowed, showing that the situation had exceeded his initial estimations. He said, "Previously, colleagues from our department attended various academic conferences, and they mentioned similar phenomena. Some academic lectures and reports are packed with an audience, while others have very few attendees. Doctor Shi is right, the attendees are all peers, and they are not interested in trivial matters."

"Yes, we cannot say that our hospital’s doctors and other logistical staff have worked hard all day for no effect," Section Chief Yang spoke up.

Upon hearing this, everyone understood that the leadership was admonishing them: they must perform well at the conference. First, they should not tarnish the hospital’s reputation; second, they should not waste the hospital’s money and resources.

The Hepatobiliary Surgery people were visibly more nervous, worrying they might face criticism from hospital leaders, or, in a worse situation, receive penalties or lose bonuses.

As the person who brought back this issue to the department, Tao Zhijie felt the gravity of the situation and asked Doctor Shi and Tan Kelin more carefully, "How did General Surgery Department Two plan the theme of this lecture at the time?"

"The lecture theme was decided after discussions within the department. There was quite a controversy initially. Later, it was decided to organize three surgeries. The timing of these surgeries needed to be well-coordinated with the operating room, to help us arrange them specially. We wanted to display key images from several surgeries that could seamlessly connect the content at the conference. Section Chief Yang can help coordinate this," said Doctor Shi.

The General Surgery Department Two had generously shared their most valuable experiences. Presumably, the Department of Cardiology had also benefited from these experiences last year, leading to great success.

Section Chief Yang did right by arranging for someone to come and pass on the experience.

"Why organize three sessions, not two or four?"

"Time," said Doctor Shi, "The organizer scheduled our lecture sessions for the morning, allotting us just over three hours. In that time, if there’s only one surgery demonstration, there would inevitably be boring parts in between. With three, the content can be more condensed. Another hospital had their lecture scheduled in the afternoon, and it was short, just over an hour, they only arranged one surgery demonstration, but the effect was also good. In fact, the final effect of this presentation should not be held to a high standard of a full house; it can be considered a success if fewer people leave halfway through."

So that was it. The Hepatobiliary Surgery people were greatly enlightened.

Generally, at conferences, after all the lecture sessions and themes are determined, the organizers print out a program and distribute it to attendees. The visiting medical peers would definitely pick out the topics of interest on the program and find time to check them out.
