Chapter 973: [973] The situation that clinicians fear the most

"Someone is here." Lifting his head, Director Tang noticed Xie Wanying had arrived—a sigh escaping him that was indeed rare. It reaffirmed how difficult Teacher Lu’s situation was.

Why were the people from the Hepatobiliary Surgery so anxiously concerned about Teacher Lu’s issue? Especially since Senior Tao had rushed over from the operating room to the emergency department the moment he had heard. Xie Wanying thought there must be some scientific basis for it. Clinical teachers never made arbitrary guesses.

It brings to mind a common notion in clinical practice—that in a family, blood-related or not, some diseases seem contagious, spreading from one affected individual to their relatives. Non-infectious diseases could manifest this way; many gastrointestinal diseases, for example, are attributed to shared familial dietary habits.

Teacher Zhang had passed away four years ago in the Hepatobiliary Surgery from liver cancer. When Teacher Zhang was first diagnosed with liver cancer, many hospital doctors found it hard to believe. He had no history of hepatitis B or cirrhosis—his liver tumor had appeared abruptly.

A peculiar onset, tumors of unknown origin, these were the types of cases that clinicians feared the most. All doctors, including Teacher Zhang himself, had a grim prognosis. Ultimately, it indeed worsened rapidly, and he died soon after surgery due to metastasis.

Now that Teacher Lu had suddenly fallen ill, could it be the same as with Teacher Zhang?

"Have you spoken with Xiao Song?" Director Tang suddenly thought of a question and turned back to ask Tao Zhijie first.

"I did speak to her, she will go visit Teacher Lu’s home. Xiao Song will accompany her. I wanted to go myself, but perhaps the teacher doesn’t want to see us at this moment," Tao Zhijie said, his voice lower than ever before.

Xiao Song visiting would be good. Teacher Lu’s grandson was studying in Beidu. When her grandson came home, Xiao Song could talk with him and see how to resolve Teacher Lu’s concerns.

It turns out Teacher Lu’s grandson, Zhang Shuping, studied at Beidu Medical College. He had just entered last year and was about to start his sophomore year. However, Teacher Lu was incredibly stubborn. Since Zhang Shuping always listened to his grandparents at home, it was unlikely he could persuade them.

Stubbornness seemed to be a common trait among bosses. Thus, even a mix of soft and hard tactics yesterday couldn’t shake Teacher Lu in the slightest.

One could say Xie Wanying’s analysis yesterday was correct; technical bosses have their own set of scientific ideas and aren’t easily swayed by others.

"What are you planning to say when you visit her home?" Director Tang asked Xie Wanying about her plan.

"Today, I’ll first take a patient’s case history with me and try to tactfully find out what concerns Teacher Lu has about the current medical procedures," Xie Wanying said.

"Do you think she has concerns about the medical procedures?" Director Tang and Tao Zhijie were surprised by her seemingly certain judgment, wondering when she had started believing she could see through Teacher Lu’s worries.

"She’s a patient, and a patient’s concerns are always singular, termed as a ’cost-benefit analysis.’ The cost of treatment, the difference between having surgery or not, how high the risks are, how much suffering it involves. As a doctor, Teacher Lu has seen many such cases clinically and surely has deeper concerns than those outside the profession. All of these actually relate to today’s medical methods and doctors’ treatment strategies."

The other two realized she truly regarded Teacher Lu as a regular patient.

Director Tang suddenly realized, "That’s true, she isn’t closely connected to Teacher Lu, so she sees things more objectively."

Tao Zhijie’s gaze fell, seeming to contemplate something.

"Leaving it to her might just work. Four years ago, a group of familiar people surrounded Teacher Zhang, and it still ended that way," Director Tang said, reaching a sad point and clearing his throat with a couple of coughs.
