Chapter 1160: 【1160】Unique Integrated Surgical Team

Zhang Huayao’s smile likely stemmed from realization, realizing that the two chief surgeons had not meshed well at all.

The decision that day to pair these two individuals as a team was the only viable option left. Logically, Tao Zhijie and Tan Kelin should have undergone pre-operative coordination training. It was obvious they would not forego such an attempt, yet it was equally clear that they simply could not see eye to eye. Bolstered by their technical expertise, achieving a seamless integration seemed harder than reaching the heavens.

Those who attain the status of a vice-senior are all stubborn in their own little ways; that’s just a common flaw among doctors. The stronger and more exceptional they are, the more likely they exhibit a kingly dominance, never willing to compromise or surrender to others.

Consequently, Tao Zhijie and Tan Kelin had a realization. Instead of perpetually failing to find the optimal rhythm with one another, they decided to find another way out. Given the circumstances, the two of them independently came up with the idea that if soul-to-soul communication was impossible, then they might as well each partner with a Mirror Assistant.

They had no confidence in partnering with each other, but when it came to working with Xie Wanying, they were confident they could achieve an understanding through a mere exchange of glances during the operation.

Therefore, in today’s surgery, mediated by the Mirror Assistant, the two chief surgeons finally coordinated as if they were the perfect magical partners.

One can only say, how can these two crafty fellows manage this?

Zhang Huayao and Shen Jinghui had no choice but to accept their fate, as it was Zhang Huayao who had personally consented that day. Without any other options, the patient’s condition was not suitable for open surgery. Wanting to perform a full laparoscopic operation, which had never been attempted by dual chief surgeons, the makeshift team had to give it their best effort.

"Gao Zhaocheng, come here." With this thought, Shen Jinghui made a call at the doorway for a doctor from the department to stand by for any contingencies.

Gao Zhaocheng, upon receiving the order, rushed over and upon his arrival, saw the results of the intraoperative exploration displayed on the monitor.

At the sight of the patient’s tumor, all the doctors present collectively inhaled a cold breath.

"This is bad." Director Tang’s voice almost got stuck, as if he was on the verge of cursing.

Disease often proves more cunning than doctors anticipate. Rather than developing at the primary site, it attacks from hidden locations within the patient’s body, like guerrilla fighters lying in wait, often striking with surprisingly effective results, catching both patients and doctors off guard.

The tumor was located at a particularly tricky position - the intersection of the duodenum, the common bile duct, and the pancreas, commonly referred to as Vater Papilla Carcinoma (VPC), which was consistent with what the doctors had judged pre-operatively.

However, pre-operative CT imaging showed the tumor was not large and might not have infiltrated the surrounding tissue. Now, as the surgical doctors lifted the cover-up, what was revealed was much more severe than indicated by the CT. The surgeons could see with their own eyes that the intestines were damaged. The tumor growing in the eroded area was like an evil flower blooming from rotting soil, hideously malign and fully manifest.

VPC is such that multiple organs and tissues intersect at that point, rendering it too complicated and challenging for CT scans and other examinations to make the most accurate pre-operative assessments.

The outcome was somewhat expected by the doctors.

"The duodenal papilla is eroded, appearing nodular." Looking at the evil flower inside the patient, Director Tang sighed, "If it’s adenocarcinoma, the malignancy level is likely very high."

As he spoke, the exploring doctor was taking a sample of the lesion to be sent for intra-operative rapid pathology analysis.

Before the pathology results came out, everyone tried to adjust their mindset. One could imagine how the pre-operative doctors’ wishful thinking was utterly shattered by the realities encountered during the operation.
