Chapter 1121: People are coming
"Teacher, I asked my junior sister to get me some food from the cafeteria," Xie Wanying said.
"Are you worried we won’t have enough here? Rest assured, he is like me, always cooking extra portions, fearing that some of you might not get enough to eat. Being a doctor is very busy," Teacher Lu said with a smile, understanding the nature of the work as a fellow medical professional.
As she listened, Xie Wanying sat down.
Zhang Shuping took a clean bowl and scooped up some noodles from the thermos, when suddenly he heard a series of footsteps. Looking up, he saw a man appear at the door.
"Uncle!" The trembling words burst from Zhang Shuping’s lips.
Hearing the noise, Xie Wanying and Teacher Lu also turned their heads.
The man who walked in was around forty, with very characteristically handsome features: thick eyebrows, deep eye sockets, and a pair of clean, sharp grey eyes. Only his hair and beard seemed to have been neglected, with slightly tousled ends and an unevenly shaven chin stubble.
As he walked, the man neatly shook his half-worn white coat, speedily slid his other arm into the opposite sleeve, and wore the unbuttoned coat in a style that carried the cool detachment of a wandering martial artist.
Such a dashing and handsome doctor uncle would surely be memorable wherever he went, akin to a star making an entrance. Xie Wanying was sure she had never seen this doctor before. Moreover, his white coat was the type provided to visiting personnel by the department, without a hospital logo, indicating he was not a doctor from Guoxie.
Who is he? Zhang Shuping calls him uncle, yet her other senior sister Mingming had mentioned that Teacher Lu only had a son. Puzzled, Xie Wanying heard a sudden loud yell from Teacher Lu beside her.
"What are you doing here!" Teacher Lu demanded, face turning a shade paler.
"My mother is unwell, how could I not come?" Uncle Zhang said.
Clearly, this man was indeed Teacher Lu’s son.
"You you you—" Teacher Lu pointed at her son.
Uncle Zhang, with both hands in his coat pockets, had a loner’s demeanor, oblivious to others’ stares including Teacher Lu’s. He walked directly up to Zhang Shuping, looked down at the noodles in the thermos and touched his rough-chinned beard, remarking, "Hmm, this is decent food for a patient."
"Yes," Zhang Shuping responded, showing a rare smile since his grandmother was hospitalized.
"I didn’t inform you to come," Teacher Lu said, patting the hospital bed as if to send her son away.
"Yes, you didn’t tell me," Uncle Zhang turned and admitted the truth his mother had mentioned.
"Who told you then?" Teacher Lu asked.
"You can guess who," Uncle Zhang smiled, his handsome and weather-beaten middle-aged face making the smile look profound and mysterious.
Teacher Lu was taken aback and looked at her grandson.
Uncle Zhang shook his finger: "Mom, don’t trouble my nephew, how could Shuping possibly tell me."
Zhang Shuping was afraid of upsetting his grandparents, and would not dare to do anything his grandmother did not instruct him to.
Teacher Lu’s frown deepened: Who could it be?
"Can’t you guess? Look at you, you tend to entrust your trust to anyone who pleases you," Uncle Zhang’s waving finger seemed to offer an explanation for his mother’s expression.
Teacher Lu’s face turned ash: "Did Cao Yong inform you?"
His mother finally guessed it right. Uncle Zhang chuckled twice.
