Chapter 1006: 【1006】Technical Barriers
The conference only featured one professional academic seminar on pediatrics, which sadly failed to excite the experts.
Xie Wanying felt a sense of regret inside.
The organizers of the conference invited various bigwigs to give lectures. Some took it seriously, while others treated it superficially, just to save face. The main reason for such discrepancies lies in the nature of the technology being discussed.
If it’s a mature technology with no secrets left, sharing it with peers poses no threat to one’s own interests, and the hope is that peers will recognize and widely apply it clinically, or like Professor Hao, seek help and inspiration. Such lectures are bound to be more substantial and of genuine quality.
However, if it pertains to a rare and valuable technology, something only one or two hospitals can perform, like the pediatric liver transplantation that the expert from Shou’er intended to discuss, why reveal such a precious technique unreservedly to everyone in the industry? Doing so would be like handing someone else the chance to take away your livelihood—it’s not possible. One can only speak with restraint, as a way to show the organizers some courtesy.
Medicine is a technical profession, just like any other tech industry, there needs to be relative technical barriers established between individuals, departments, and hospitals.
Then there are those colleagues whose minds are simpler, not too concerned with personal gains or losses, and prone to slip-ups. That’s why Luo Jingming was sent by his department to check out the conference, as running into such people could mean a lucky learning opportunity.
After spending half the day, he had no luck encountering any colleague leaking secrets. Instead, he ran into a promising medical student from his own hospital, which was quite thought-provoking.
After a complimentary lunch at the hotel, he strolled through a few sessions of the conference, and the day passed without incident.
At the close of the day’s learning, Luo Jingming left the venue with her, and his stern face seemed to soften with concern. He asked her, "Are you coming tomorrow?"
"I won’t be coming. There’s a surgery at the department tomorrow, and I need to help in the OR," Xie Wanying answered.
"Don’t tell anyone from Hepatobiliary Surgery that you saw me tomorrow," Luo Jingming requested of her.
Perhaps Senior Luo didn’t want others to know he attended the conference, Xie Wanying nodded in agreement.
Seeing her nod, Luo Jingming’s serious lips seemed to curve slightly, and he seemed to understand why Nie Jiamin, who had just returned to the country, took a liking to her.
A doctor’s talent is very important, but some talented doctors are not likable. After all is said and done, there’s a rather meaningful saying from the big boss of their hospital, President Wu: to be a doctor, one must first learn how to be a person.
He paused for a moment, and in his eyes behind the glasses, reflecting completed thoughts, he likewise promised her, "I won’t tell anyone else about running into you today either."
Perhaps Senior Brother thought that keeping the learning experience at the conference a secret was equally important to her. Xie Wanying thought it over and it seemed reasonable, so she nodded again.
Exiting the hotel, Luo Jingming helped her hail a taxi to return to school.
Senior Luo appears somewhat cool on the outside, but like Teacher Nie, he is considerate. Look at him giving her his mobile number before sending her off: "If it’s inconvenient to contact Teacher Nie, you can call me."
Asking a professor about problems is a matter of facing pressure. For instance, given the choice between calling Senior Cao and Senior Brother Huang, she would definitely choose Senior Brother Huang first.
According to the norms in the medical profession, issues are to be reported up the hierarchy one level at a time. Jumping the chain of command would only result in being sent back with instructions to consult with her immediate superiors first.
