Chapter 846: Joshua in action - Part 1
Joshua understood where this was going and stepped forward instantly, taking the lead. "Major Meyers, did you find anything that might shed light on the type of trigger mechanism used in the bombs you detonated the last few days?"
This answer was crucial. It would decide how substantial the losses would be.
"Yes." Ethan nodded. "They had a software that was triggered active over the Internet."
Joshua couldn’t suppress his lips from arching up slightly. It was good news. They still had hope.
Ethan saw his strange expression and he looked at the three men in wonder. "Is something wrong?"
"Major Meyers, I might have a solution to the problem. But I’ll have to study the type of software that has been used to trigger the bomb," Joshua explained and Ethan looked at him for a moment before realization dawned upon him.
"I presume you are good with computers?" Ethan’s words came out as a question.
"Yes, he is brilliant at it," Ian acknowledged, admiring his friend’s talent for the nth time in his life. Joshua was a genius when it came to computers and hacking and he couldn’t help but be proud of him.
"Well, I am so-so." Joshua scratched his head, embarrassed by the sudden attention he was receiving.
"I guess there’s nothing wrong in giving your skills a test. We have time." Ethan didn’t mind the delay. If it could reduce the losses, they could give it a try.
"Yes, Major. If Joshua is unsuccessful, we can still destroy the pillars." Noah too had no problems with it. Although he didn’t mind his hotel being destroyed to protect the people’s lives, he was still a businessman. If he could reduce his losses somehow, he was willing to risk it. Moreover, he trusted Joshua and his abilities.
"Don’t have high hopes. I’ll have to study the software first to find out if I can crack it or not. Also, I might need backup."
Joshua wasn’t as confident as his friends. His skills were excellent, he agreed. But there were anomalies sometimes and he desperately hoped this wasn’t one of those.
"Major Meyers, is anybody from your team skilled with coding and computers?"
Ethan bit the inside of his cheek thoughtfully and looked at his men one by one. Most of his teammates were brilliant at close combat, attack, and handling explosives. The ones skilled with computers hadn’t accompanied him. They were all at the base.
Ethan’s eyes fell on one of his men and he pursed his lips. "I have one. Is he enough?"
"Probably. Let me call Maggie."
Ethan knew who Maggie was. So, he didn’t ask much.
"I will need a laptop from my lab at home. Umm..."
"I’ll go," Ian offered.
Joshua’s presence at the hotel was important. They couldn’t afford to waste much time. By the time he returned the laptop, maybe Joshua could work his magic and discover something.
Joshua nodded and dialed Maggie’s number instantly. "While you are at it, grab two more laptops. You’ll find them on my desk. You know what? Video call me once you reach home. I need a few other devices as well."
Ian didn’t waste any time and started sprinting towards the exit while Ethan returned with his teammate who he deemed was good at coding.
"Maggie, I need you at Hotel Arvy. Come quickly. It’s urgent. Also, bring your laptop," Joshua informed before Maggie could speak and ended the call once he got her word.
"Hello, he is Captain Joham Kane. He is good with computers. This is Joshua and Noah," Ethan introduced.
"Hello, Captain Kane."
"Hello." Joham smiled reservedly and said humbly, "Major is exaggerating. My skills aren’t that good."
"Captain, any extra hand is welcome here. I’m sure we can team up and find a solution together," Joshua assured him before turning to Noah.
"I will have to use the computer at the reception."
"Go ahead. Use all you want."
"Thanks."
Noah, Ethan, and Joham followed Joshua to the reception.
"I designed the hotel’s internal network. All the devices in the hotel using the Internet have been labeled. I will be able to find all the other devices connected to the Internet."
"Is that possible?" Ethan asked in surprise, his eyes filled with awe.
"Yes. Please disconnect your phones or other devices connected to the hotel wifi."
Ethan sent out the orders immediately while Joshua began to check all the devices connected to the hotel’s wifi.
"Since the bombs were triggered over the Internet, they must have been connected to the hotel wifi," Joshua explained to no one in particular.
"Got it. There are eight unknown devices connected to the hotel wifi."
Joshua’s words affirmed their analysis and they gritted their teeth in dismay.
"Even if you detonate the bombs by hacking the software, you will still have to remove them lest they become a threat in the future," Ethan warned and Noah nodded in understanding.
"I understand, Major. I’ll get things sorted out as soon as possible."
"Good."
Since Joshua didn’t have a laptop with him, he couldn’t do anything. All the necessary software and tools were on his laptop. So, he could only wait for Ian to return.
After around twenty minutes, Ian video-called him and Joshua gave him the list of things he wanted. He even accurately pointed out where each device was placed, making it easier for Ian to locate them.
In no time, Ian had all the devices Joshua wanted and was on his way back to the hotel.
"Hopefully, I can crack the code and end this shit." Joshua ran a hand through his hair, hoping the software would be easy to hack.
"Hopefully." The three men sighed while they continued to wait.
Joshua’s phone rang suddenly and at the same time, Maggie entered with one of Ethan’s teammates in tow.
"Joshua, what’s happening? Why are we here? Major Meyers?" Maggie was shocked to see the men so perturbed. She was confused out of her mind and she kept looking at the men one by one, looking for answers.
"Well, long story short. Jared has placed bombs in this hotel and we are going to try hacking the software that triggered them," Joshua answered while Maggie’s eyeballs almost rolled out of his sockets.
"What the fuck!"
"Same, Maggie. Same."
"How many?"
"Eight."
"Shit!"
"Yep. Set up your laptop. We’ll start once Ian returns."
