Chapter 836: Road to recovery

Chapter 836: Road to recovery

Joshua held Ivy’s shoulder excitedly, his eyes twinkling in joy.

"What did you say just now, Ivy?" he queried, hoping that it wasn’t all his dream and Ivy had in fact spoken to him.

Ivy was stunned speechless and she stared at him silently. More than him, she was disoriented and she kept blinking at him before it finally dawned upon her. She had gained her speech back. She had spoken just a moment ago.

"Ivy, please say something. You’re scaring me," Joshua’s expression morphed into one filled with concern and he begged her to say something. Her lack of reaction was perturbing him and his mind started to run wild, imagining all the dreadful thoughts possible.

"Hey, guys. What’s happening?" Aria questioned from the door. She had dashed inside the mansion when they returned, leaving Noah a step behind. She was excited to share all that had happened in the evening with her sister. Who knew she would find Ivy and Joshua in a very compromising position?

The duvet had been pulled off and Ivy was nearly leaning into Joshua’s embrace as he kept staring at her. Although there wasn’t anything weird about it, it still felt strange considering what Ivy had told her in the morning.

’Was Joshua throwing himself on Ivy?’ Aria wondered. But the thought vanished the moment it had popped up. Joshua might not be the best of men, but he wasn’t a scoundrel either. He would never force himself on women. So, it had to be something else.

"Aria, Ivy spoke just now. Please ask her to speak again, Aria. Please," Joshua pleaded, hoping to hear his name again from his beloved’s mouth.

"What!" Aria’s mind went blank for a moment. She had imagined all sorts of things. Heck, her mind had even gone as far as to think that Ivy had fallen sick again. Never did she expect it was actually the opposite.

"Ivy!" she yelled in joy and rushed inside. "Were you able to speak? Did you gain your speech back?" Her eyes crinkled in happiness as she waited for her sister to speak to her.

"I..." It took Ivy a long time to come out of her trance. "I guess so," she spoke, not knowing what to say at that moment. It was as if she had forgotten all her vocabulary and English.

Aria’s eyes welled up and she immediately dived in for a hug, not caring that Joshua was still holding Ivy in her arms.

The sudden force pushed Ivy back and Joshua had to let go of her reluctantly. Yet, he was still over the moon as he continued gazing at her.

"Joshua, why did you... what’s happening guys?" Ian came running with his medical kit. He was on the terrace, discussing some matters related to the hospital when Joshua called him. It had taken him some time to rush down and retrieve his medical kit before reaching Ivy’s room.

"Ian, Ivy spoke just now. Ivy spoke to us," Joshua answered for all three of them, and not just Ian, but Noah who had arrived by then heard him.

"Really? Ivy, say something. How are you feeling?" Ian entered the room, followed by Noah who was grinning from ear to ear.

"I am feeling weird." Ivy didn’t know how to explain her feelings and settled with the truth.

"Weird? How? Are you in pain, Ivy? What’s wrong?" Aria pulled back immediately and looked at her in concern. The others too held similar expressions as their smiles vanished.

"I mean I don’t know how I feel, but I’m fine, Aria." Ivy hadn’t spoken for some time. So, her throat had gone parched, her voice sounding gruff and coarse.

"Ian, please take a look at Ivy. I don’t think I can do it." Aria’s hands shook as she stepped away. Excitement, relief, concern - a myriad of emotions bombarded her all at once, making it difficult for her to check her sister herself.

Ian controlled his emotions and stepped forward to check on Ivy. A tense minute passed and no one spoke a word. The tension in the air was palpable as everyone held their breaths, waiting for Ian to finish checking.

"Are you in pain, Ivy? Does your head ache?"

"It did some time ago, not now," Ivy replied.

"What kind of pain? Was it similar to a headache?"

"No. It was more like a sting, but an intense one."

"How long did it last?" Ian pursed his lips and noted down all that she had said.

"A few seconds probably. I was able to speak after that." Ivy was honest with him. After all, it concerned her health. She couldn’t take any risk with herself.

"I see. How about your legs? Can you move them?" Since Ivy had gained her speech, did it mean she could move her legs as well? Had Ivy recovered completely?

Ivy froze for a second. She had been so concerned and ecstatic about gaining her speech back that she had completely forgotten about her immobility.

"I haven’t checked. I..." Ivy tried moving her legs, but couldn’t. Her hope dwindled after a few seconds when she couldn’t move her legs after attempting for a long time.

"I can’t." She gave up eventually and her shoulders dropped. She was depressed and her obvious sadness stung Joshua who hadn’t moved an inch all along.

"Don’t be sad, Ivy. You’re recovering well and this might be an indication that you will recover completely soon." Ian comforted her and Ivy nodded at him, forcing her thoughts to the back of her mind.

"Your vitals are all normal. But I’m not a brain specialist. I’d suggest we get you checked in the hospital. We don’t want to take any risk."

Everyone understood what Ian was trying to say. The human brain was the most mysterious organ and it was impossible to predict anything about it. It was better to be careful than sorry later.

"I agree. Let’s go to the hospital. We don’t want to take any risks," Aria added and no one had any objections, not even Ivy.

More than an hour later, the doctor returned with the MRI scan report and the other test reports.

"Doctor, what’s the status? How’s Ivy?" Aria couldn’t control herself and asked immediately.

"Ivy is healthy. There is no problem with her brain or anywhere else in her body. And about the sting she felt, I am assuming it’s because of the nerves related to speech. Don’t worry. Everything is normal. She got her speech back. It won’t be long before she gains her mobility as well."
