Chapter 805: Can walk or not?
After the small hiccup, there were no other problems during her time of recovery, and Ivy slowly started to get better again. This time, she was motivated to get well soon and recover quickly. So, she didn’t take any matter to heart and didn’t take stress at all.
The others too spoke about good things with her and kept her happy, indirectly helping her to recover better. It was only when Joshua was around that Ivy ignored her surroundings. Nothing he said or did affected her anymore, and she didn’t pay any heed to his words.
Joshua himself knew that he had become non-existent to Ivy. But he didn’t give up and kept speaking about good things to her. Just like that, more than a month passed.
"How do you feel today, Ivy?" The doctor questioned, as he usually did, and Ivy managed a nod this time.
"Good. Your injuries are healing well, and I see that you’re able to sit upright as well." The doctor gave a smile of approval and encouragement.
"But the gauze around your head will remain for some more time. We don’t want you scratching your itchy wounds. Do we?" He joked, and Ivy smiled again.
"Today, we’ll try to see if you’re able to move your limbs. Can you do that for me?"
From limbs, Ivy knew what exactly the doctor meant. She was able to move her hands two weeks after she started recovering. But she hadn’t had the chance to move her legs even once.
"Doctor West," The doctor looked at Aria for help, and she got to work immediately while the nurse assisted her as well.
At first, Ivy was highly excited. It had been more than a month, and she had moved an inch from the bed. Although the surroundings had changed, and she now had a ward for herself instead of an ICU, she still felt terrible being confined in the constrained place. She just wanted to leave and explore the world she missed so much.
Aria held Ivy’s shoulder while the nurse removed the blanket covering her and moved her legs until she was sitting with her legs dangling off the bed.
"Careful and slow," Aria whispered as both the nurse and she helped Ivy to stand.
But barely had she stood up when her legs gave away, and she tumbled to the floor instantly, taking both Aria and the nurse with her.
"Careful!" Aria shouted, and the nurse took the fall on herself to prevent Ivy from getting injured even more.
"Are you alright?" Aria looked at her sister in fright and noticed her panting lightly.
Ivy’s eyes moved to Aria, and she blinked at her twice to assure her. But Aria wasn’t convinced. It was only after she examined her sister herself and found no other injuries that she felt better.
"Can you try to stand up again?" The doctor questioned Ivy, and the trio tried again, only to meet the same result. Ivy’s legs couldn’t support her at all.
"Hmm. I see." The doctor mused. "Doctor Aria, can you help her back to the bed, or should I call the ward boy for assistance?"
"I can do it." Aria gritted her teeth and tried to help her sister. But every time, Ivy’s legs gave way, and eventually, she looked at the doctor in defeat.
Understanding her plight, the doctor was just about to call the ward boy for her when Joshua entered the ward. At first, he didn’t know what was happening. But when he noticed Ivy sitting on the floor, his eyes widened instantly, and he rushed to her in a blink.
"What’s wrong? Why is Ivy on the floor?" He questioned no one in particular.
When the West sisters didn’t respond to him, the doctor took it upon himself to answer him. "We’re trying to help Ivy stand up. But she’s not prepared for that yet. I’ll get the ward boy."
"Hold on." Joshua stopped him before he could leave the room and gestured for the nurse to move away.
Neither Aria nor Ivy stopped him, and he lifted her gently and placed her back on the bed. He was careful with her so as to not aggravate her wounds even more. Ivy’s head was still injured, and any small movement would cause her to gasp in pain for a long time.
He then covered her with the blanket and stepped back instantly. Joshua knew where his place was, and it was not beside Ivy, not now at least.
"Hmm, Ivy. We’ll try it after a few days. You’re not ready to stand on your feet yet, and don’t worry, this is common." The doctor assured her himself before her thoughts ran wild, and she started to imagine the worst.
"In such cases, people take two to six months to completely recover and stand on their feet. It has only been more than a month. Let’s take it slow. Shall we?" The doctor questioned her with a nod, and Ivy smiled at him again.
Although she was disheartened, she wasn’t discouraged. Since the doctor told her that she’d need more time, then she’d wait until she was fit before trying again.
"Good. I’m changing the dosage of the medicines. Is there anything else you want to ask me?" The doctor looked at Ivy first before moving his gaze to Aria and finally to Joshua. When he didn’t receive any response from them, he nodded at them. After instructing the nurse about the new dosage of medicines, he took his leave, leaving the three people alone.
"Don’t worry, Ivy. It’s all common. Things like these take time." Aria too assured her, and Ivy blinked at her in response. Her gaze then fell on Joshua, who was watching her silently.
Aria followed her line of sight and pursed her lips before. "Thank you." She finally expressed, startling Joshua with her unexpected words.
"Are you speaking to me?" Joshua was perplexed. He even pointed at himself and looked around to make sure he was the one Aria was looking at.
"Yes. Thank you." Aria said again impassively.
Joshua blinked once, twice, thrice before a smile bloomed on his face. It was the first time since the mishap that Aria had spoken to him. Although she was merely expressing her gratitude, it was still a huge thing for him, and he couldn’t stop beaming at her.
"Not a problem." He replied awkwardly and that was it.
Aria didn’t entertain him anymore and returned her attention to her sister, who was now staring at her legs.
"What would you like, sister? I’ll ask Dad to prepare it." Aria chirped, forcing Ivy to snap out of her thoughts.
Ivy wanted to roll her eyes at her sister’s question. Did she even have a choice? Wasn’t her food limited to congee or something liquid-ish and that too utterly bland?
"How about some pumpkin porridge this time?"
Ivy’s eyes sparkled as soon as she heard her. Pumpkin porridge... yummy. Unlike the bland congee she was eating, pumpkin porridge would at least be sweet. Now, she was looking forward to eating it.
"I’ll call Dad right away. I’ll be right back."
Aria stepped out of the ward, leaving Ivy to Joshua, and once again, Ivy went back to ignoring her surroundings. She just stared at her legs as she drowned herself in her thoughts.
Joshua
too didn’t speak a word as he continued to observe her silently. The awkwardness continued until Aria returned and she was not alone.
"Look who’s here, Ivy." She chimed as she dragged her father inside as well. "And interestingly, he and I share the same thoughts today. Guess what he brought for you."
Ivy looked at her Dad expectantly as the man let out a helpless chuckle.
"Aria, couldn’t you have allowed me to have my time? Why did you spoil my surprise?" Oliver chided her as he pulled out a thermal lunchbox.
Aria just snuck out her tongue playfully, making Ivy smile at her.
A lovely smell spread in the ward, and Ivy’s stomach rumbled immediately. Pumpkin porridge... yes!
"See. Didn’t I tell you that Dad and I had the same thoughts today? Our telepathy worked amazingly well." Aria then turned towards her Dad and helped him hold the box. "Dad, you have no idea. Ivy wanted to have pumpkin porridge as well, and I was about to call you to inform the same."
"What can I say? I’m Superman. I can read minds." Oliver beamed and handed Aria a spoon so she could feed Ivy like she usually did.
"Ivy, this looks so appetizing. May I have a spoon as well?" Aria was about to taste it herself first. But when her sister sent her a glare, she stopped and surrendered in defeat.
"Fine, fine. I was just joking. This is all for you." She then helped her have it, and Ivy for the first time felt her taste buds explode and dance in joy. How long had it been since she last tasted anything? A long, long time for sure.
"Is it good?" Oliver gave her an expectant look and when Ivy blinked at him, his smile spread until it reached his eyes.
"Awesome. Now be a good girl and finish all of it." Aria spoke to her as if she was dealing with a little girl, and Ivy wanted to roll her eyes in dismay. But she withheld herself and finished all the porridge. Finally, after a long time, her stomach was satisfied, and she went to sleep happily after the medicine Aria had given her started kicking in.
