Chapter 759: Memories of the past
Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, Valerie drove her car like a maniac, not caring about anything else. The entire track was empty and she was the only one driving. So, there was no chance of having any casualties.
Valerie could not stop Jonathan Carter’s words from replaying in her mind. It kept rewinding like a broken record. The truth was not that unbearable to her. It was the fact that the man had neglected to bring the truth to life when the time was right that perturbed her. He had a lot of opportunities and with the power he held, the old Carter could have stopped Jared from committing the crimes. Though difficult, it was not impossible. But he just sat on the fence while the people continued to suffer in Jared’s hands.
Valerie pressed hard on the gas pedal and swerved swiftly when she reached the edge. The tires screeched due to the sudden impact. But her control over the steering was brilliant. So, the minor disturbance did not faze her.
While she stared ahead, tears trickled down her face. Her father’s face flashed before her eyes. The man always had a sunny smile and was passionate about his work. Never had she seen him complain about anything, not even when...
Valerie wiped her tears and switched the gear. The memories from the past when her father was still alive started to invade her mind and she felt miserable. The happy days had not lasted long. She had lost her father when she was on duty and by the time she reached him, his body had turned cold. She did not even get to see his face one last time. Her father had left her just like that.
A distant memory flashed in mind and she went back to the day when she was selected to join the Intelligence. Her father had never been more jubilant. He had even thrown a huge party, inviting all his friends and colleagues while he flaunted his daughter’s achievements.
A faint smile landed on her lips as she reminisced about the good old days. The ringing of her phone, however, broke the somber atmosphere. But Valerie did not pay any attention. She ignored the call and continued driving on the race track. It was the only place where she could vent her emotions without any problems.
With no one to interfere or disturb her, it was her sanctuary, the place she visited frequently every time she missed her father, every time she thought of the injustice he had suffered, every time she thought of her father’s murderer who was still at large.
Today, however, it was due to all three reasons. The combined factor had caused a tsunami of emotions to erupt in her and if she did not vent it out, she would just combust and destroy everything with her.
Again, Valerie’s phone rang. She glanced at the phone and when she noticed that it was Maggie calling her, she ignored it again.
The moment she had left the Carter mansion, she had not waited for her friends and had driven off without them. It was no wonder they kept calling her. Nobody knew about her and her affinity with race tracks. It was a secret she had maintained for years.
Valerie was so overwhelmed with emotions that she did not realize what impact her absence had caused on her friends. They were going berserk with worry and to add to it, she was not picking up their calls.
Maggie shook her head at Ryder and Preston when Valerie did not pick up her call again.
"Where could she have gone? Why is she not picking up our calls?" Ryder was beyond frustrated. But he did not know what else to do and where to look for her. The woman had just vanished even before they could get to her.
"Maggie, can’t you track her down?" Preston too was worried for his Deputy. "Her phone is on. Maybe you can locate her."
"I’m on it already. It’ll be easier for me to track her if she picks up her call." Maggie stated and tried to call her Deputy again. But in vain. It was as if Valerie had decided not to speak to anyone that day. Everybody’s calls were ignored.
"Is something the matter, Maggie? What’s wrong?" Ian appeared from behind and looked at the trio who were yet to depart. They were standing beside their car and were yet to depart from Noah’s mansion.
"It’s Deputy." Maggie sighed in helplessness. "She’s not picking up our calls and we don’t know where she’s gone. I’m trying to locate her in the meantime. But I need some time."
Ian understood the situation immediately and he pursed his lips. Valerie’s reaction was understandable. If he was in her place, he too would have reacted the same way or even more drastically. She was right. None of them had lost their family. But she had. Only she knew the pain and it was evident from the way she had reacted that the old Carter’s words had only served to trigger her painful memories.
"May I try?" Ian queried, feeling bad for the lady whom the world knew to be bold and confident. She could handle any situation herself but not this. She needed someone with her, considering how vulnerable she was currently. Leaving her alone would be detrimental, not just to her physical well-being but to her mental health as well.
Maggie first tried to contact her again only to meet the same result. Desperate to find her Deputy, she nodded at Ian and watched him make the call.
Valerie braked suddenly when she saw who was calling her. The car jerked due to the sudden impact and she was almost thrown out of her seat if not for her seat belt protecting her.
With trembling hands, she stared at the name flashing on the screen and wiped her tears. Surprised by the unexpected call, Valerie took deep breaths before she answered it.
"Hello Deputy?" Not just Ian, even Maggie, Preston and Ryder were baffled by the outcome. Valerie had not picked up any of their calls but had attended the doctor’s. How shocking!
"Please do not cut the call, Deputy." Ian looked at Maggie and answered. Even though the lady had yet to speak, he could sense from her loud breaths that her nose was blocked and he did not have to be a genius to guess that she had been crying.
"If possible, could we meet? I have something to tell you. Please."
