Chapter 752: Jared’s assurance

Chapter 752: Jared’s assurance

"Pick up the phone, Jared. Pick up the phone." Preston paced back and forth in an almost empty corridor before settling near the window, with his back leaning against it.

"Pick up the damn phone." He gritted his teeth as he observed the nurse at the other end carrying a tray.

The call ended. But Preston did not give up. Instead, he dialed Jared’s number repeatedly until the man picked up the call.

"Preston, why are you hellbent on ruining my sleep?" Jared’s groggy voice filled his ears and Preston rolled his eyes at the man’s carelessness and ignorance. The world was on fire and his cover was about to be blown. But the man who had promised to handle everything for him was in the dark and was even in the mood to have a good nap.

Preston was beyond irked and clutched the phone tight. "Jared, I am about to be shot with a bullet and you are in the mood to nap. Do you want me to die?"

Jared sighed and coughed softly. "What happened, Preston? Why do you sound...." He stopped, looking for an appropriate word.

"Annoyed, distressed, nervous?" Preston gave him the options.

"No. I wanted to say grumpy. Why do you sound so grumpy? But we can settle for other words if that is how you feel right now. What happened?" Jared’s tone turned serious and Preston composed his expression when an older man who was sitting on the waiting chairs glanced at him.

"I have an inkling that Maggie did not buy my story and must have investigated its authenticity."

"But this should not be a reason for you to be afraid." Jared was oddly calm and Preston narrowed his eyes slowly.

"What do you mean?"

"You do not have to worry about being caught. I have bought all the people who worked in that hospital you were supposedly admitted to. Even if Maggie tries to find any clue against you, she won’t be able to." Jared stated with such arrogance that Preston was rendered speechless for some time.

"What if the hospital staff go back and reveal the truth?" Preston was still unconvinced and he questioned back almost aggressively.

"That will not happen, ever. They wouldn’t dare to go back and speak anything they shouldn’t. Their lives as well as their loved ones are in my hands and anything they do will only push them to the abyss."

"Well, thank you." Preston had nothing else to say. Although he was still scared, he still chose to believe him.

"Since I promised you that I’ll handle your matter, I’ll handle it until the end. You should just relax and continue deceiving the people around you like you usually do."

"Fine. I’ll do as you say." Preston relented with a sigh.

"Now, if we are done, shall I end the call? You disturbed my sleep." Jared complained.

"There is another matter though." Preston hesitated and thought about it for a moment. "And this might interest you."

"What is it?"

"I will text you about it. It is not convenient for me to speak about it. I am at the hospital."

"Fine. Keep me informed if you find anything." Jared was curious as to what Preston wanted to tell him. But he did not show it in his words and ended the call as he sat up and stretched lazily.

"Maggie...." His tongue pressed his upper canine as he narrowed his eyes. "Looks like I’ll have to give you all a huge surprise. Otherwise, you will never learn your lesson."

Jared’s unlocked his phone when he heard a ding.

Preston: Joshua had visited Valerie and the others some time ago and from their words, I am assuming something huge is about to happen. I was asleep when he was here. So, I do not know the actual context of the conversation. But whatever Valerie finds out soon might not be something good for her.

Jared’s frown deepened as he read the text message and he tilted his head in wonder.

Preston: Valerie will also meet Noah and the others soon to formulate a plan to capture you. Be careful.

Jared scoffed as he read Preston’s last sentence. ’Plan as much as you want. But none of you are capable of even finding me, let alone touching and killing me.’

Jared was not that bothered by Preston’s message. He more or less had an inkling as to what was happening and what might be the reason behind Joshua’s visit. Instead, he was more focused on what Noah planned to do next. It was crucial for him, especially considering the deadly surprise he had prepared for them.

Preston waited for some time. However, there was no response from Jared even after a few minutes had passed. Although he wanted to call and find out Jared’s thoughts on the matter, he held his curiosity and went to the canteen to buy beverages for his friends.

Tapping his right foot impatiently while waiting for the beverages, he glanced at his phone repeatedly. However, there was no response from Jared for some time. Only when he started typing a text message after he could not control his impatience anymore that he received Jared’s reply.

Jared: Got it. I want you to accompany Valerie when she meets Noah and the others. It is very crucial for what I have planned next. I need you to tell me everything that happens in the meeting, word for word.

Preston’s brows shot up and his other hand that was about to retrieve the beverages stopped suddenly. Immediately, he typed a response, flashing a quick smile at the lady arranging his order for him to carry back easily.

Preston: What do you mean? Is there something I am missing here?

Jared’s reply was quick and short. ’Not anything important for now. You’ll find out when the time is right. I’ll have to go now. But just be careful when you attend the meeting.’

Jared’s words did not alleviate his misery. Instead, it only served to make him more anxious. However, Preston knew he would not receive any response from Jared anytime soon. So, he gave up probing further into it and picked up his orders as he returned to Valerie’s ward.
