Chapter 88: Looking
"Sidney Price."
The name had been echoing in her head since the moment she’d heard it last night, and she couldn’t shake no matter how hard she tried. It clung to her thoughts, when she’d gone to sleep last night and now she woke up in the morning, still thinking of it. And the longer it stayed, the more her curiosity grew. The urge to look up the name in a search bar and see what might surface—had her fingers itching with anticipation. She’d even caught herself hovering over her phone, thumb ready to tap on the browser.
But she stopped herself every time.
Because deep down, she was afraid. Afraid of what she might find. If it was only someone who was AIden’s nemesis, then she shoudl not have been so curious. But that name was clinging to her thoughts and somehow she had a feeling that it might be something related to her past.
What if it was someone from her past? The very thought sent a cold shiver down her spine. This Sidney Price, he was already working with Charles Hawk, that reprehensible man. If this person was also related to her past, then he could only be one of those people who were trying to hurt her.
And then... she remembered.
With a determined stride, she crossed the room and moved swiftly to the dressing room, the place where she’d kept all the wedding gifts and deliveries that had been transferred to her room earlier.
Heading towards the dresser straight away, she pulled open the jewelry drawer and began rummaging through its contents. Her fingers brushed over delicate pieces of gold and silver, until they finally landed on what she was looking for: a pretty, elegant velvet box nestled near the back.
This was why the name had been stuck in her mind. Of all the jewelry and extravagant gifts she’d received on that night, this one had stood out to her the most. She remembered the card that had accompanied it, a simple, elegant note wishing her and Aiden a happy marriage. The signature at the bottom had been unmistakable: Sidney Price. The person who’d given the gift had already left so Grandma had simply shown it to her before sending it away.
She sighed, the tension in her shoulders easing as she traced her finger over the diamonds. She had been so captivated by the piece when it had been presented—it was so much to her liking, almost as if it had been chosen specifically for her. At the time, she had intended to write a thank-you card herself after the party. But then... everything had gotten complicated with the attempted life attempt on her and then she’d forgotten all about it.
Sidney Price. That was why the name had stuck with her, lingering in her thoughts even as she tried to push it aside. It wasn’t because he was Aiden’s nemesis or some shadow from her past. It was simply the name of the person who had sent the most beautiful gift of all.
She breathed out slowly, almost laughing at her own paranoia. What had she been so worried about?
Rubbing her hands, she placed the box back in and decided to look the man up. But then...stopped. Why use the search engine when she could go to the person who could tell her directly. Pushing her phone into her pocket, she raced to the dining room in the other wing and grinned when she found Grandma sitting there having breakfast.
"Good morning, grandma." She called in a sing song voice as she moved to the older woman, kissing her cheek, before taking her place next to her.
"Serena, my child! What are you doing here, this morning? Didn’t Aiden cook any breakfast for you?"
"I was missing you, grandma. So I came here."
"You missed me? But have you forgotten you are going to be in the office with me all day?" Grandma pointed out, though she was pleased with Serena’s words and showed it by putting a plate in front of her and quickly piling it up with fruit.
"You? No! Grandma! I know you are not going to be in the office. The person in my office? My boss? She is a dragon, you know! That dragon made me spend the entire day yesterday in a dark cave? But you? You are not a dragon. You are my sweetest grandma..."
Mabel Hawk laughed at the flattery and wagged her finger at Serena," You are already bad mouthing your boss? In a day? Are you so weak?"
"Of course not, Grandma! I wouldn’t dare to do that! Don’t worry, I can handle all sorts of dragons! Because unfortunately, I am even married to one.. And that one is even a fire breathing dragon..."
Mabel Hawk laughed then as she shook her head. " It seems my poor granddaughter is surrounded by dragons!"
"You are correct, grandma! You are my safe place only." Serena said as she blinked her eyes at the older woman, giving her a pitiful look.
Mabel grinned and shook her head," You are a flatterer, little child! A cunning one at that."
"Thank you, grandma! I will take that as a compliment from you."
"It is. Now, tell me what brings you here so bright and early."
"I told you...I miss you..."
"That is the story... But I know you now.. if it comes to choosing between food that Aiden has made for you and this old woman, you are going to be choosing food."
Serena smiled sheepishly then," Okay okay. You are right. I think I might have been a starving child in the past life or something. I cannot resist food. And Aiden makes the best dishes..."
Grandma laughed," I think that is how he got you to marry him as well. He must have stolen your heart via your stomach."
Serena laughed then and was about to agree... before her eyes widened.. Just what had she been about to agree to? Her heart was just hers, thank you very much! No one was stealing it.
Panicking, she looked at grandma and blurted the name," Sidney Price.
