Chapter 86: Refreshed

"What do you think you are doing?"

Serena froze mid-bite, the fork with a delicate piece of cake hovering just inches from her lips. Her gaze flicked upward, meeting his sharp eyes. His tone was biting, sharp enough to slice through the light-hearted moment she’d been enjoying.

"Uhh..." She blinked, her brow furrowing as she glanced between the cake and him, clearly confused by his sudden attention. After all, he had walked right past her when he stormed inside without so much as a glance in her direction. And now, here he was, making a scene. "I think I was about to eat some cake."

She raised the fork higher, letting the light catch the glossy frosting. It looked delicious, but his foul mood was overshadowing her appetite. Serena held it up for him to see, arching an eyebrow. "Want some?"

He glared at her, his jaw tight with barely restrained anger. She could see it in the way his fists clenched at his sides, the tension radiating off him in waves. He’d stormed in, his bad mood practically announcing itself before he spoke. He had probably gone to confront Aiden about whatever issue was bothering him, but it seemed that hadn’t gone well either. Now, for some reason, he thought it was a good idea to dump his frustration on her.

"Are you trying to be funny with me?" His voice was ice-cold, dripping with disdain. "Do you think I care about what you’re eating? I wouldn’t even take poison from you if you offered it."

Serena simply shrugged, unfazed by the venom in his words. "Well, common sense would suggest you shouldn’t take poison from anyone, not just me." She paused, a small smirk forming on her lips as she looked him up and down. "But if you’re planning to make an exception for someone in the future, I guess that’s your choice."

She returned to her cake, unbothered by his glare, though she could feel the weight of it pressing down on her. It was obvious he wanted a reaction, some sort of emotional crack from her, but she wasn’t about to give him the satisfaction. If he thought his mood could ruin her day, he was sorely mistaken.

The day had been going far too well for her to be rattled now. Her first day at work had gone smoothly, she’d enjoyed a great meal, and this dessert—this perfect piece of cake—was too delightful to let anything spoil her mood. But, unfortunately for her, Nathan seemed intent on doing exactly that.

Before she could take another bite, Nathan reached out, snatched the plate from her hand with a swift, violent motion and with one cold, calculated throw, hurled the delicate china to the ground. The plate shattered on impact, the once beautiful piece of cake splattering in a mess of frosting and crumbs across the floor.

For a split second, Serena stared in disbelief at the scattered remains of her dessert, her mood swiftly plummeting. The tension in the air thickened, and just then, Aiden emerged from the next room, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.

"Nathan. Just what do you think you are doing?"

But Serena shot him a sharp look and instead turned to the young boy," Relax Aiden. He’s just being childish. I’ll handle it."

Before Aiden could say more, Serena held up a hand, her gaze never leaving Nathan. "Relax, Aiden." Her voice was cool, almost dismissive, but there was steel beneath it. "He’s just being childish. I’ll handle it."

Nathan took a step closer to Serena, attempting to loom over her, his expression twisted with frustration and anger. "You think I’m being childish?" His voice rose, each word more venomous than the last. "I don’t know what kind of spell you’ve cast on this ice block," he spat, gesturing toward Aiden, "but if you think your tricks are going to get rid of our father—"

Before he could finish his tirade, Serena’s hand moved swiftly as she grabbed a glass of water from the nearby table and splashed it directly into his face. Nathan gasped, stumbling back a step, shocked, water dripping from his chin.

Serena stood calmly, holding the now-empty glass, her expression as cool as ever. "You were saying?" she asked, her voice calm, almost mocking.

Nathan wiped at his face, blinking through the water, his anger momentarily stunned into silence. When he failed to say anything, Serena simply picked up the jug of water, poured a glass of water into it and then, unexpectedly threw it at his face again, this time soaking him, clothes and all.

Nathan’s eyes widened as he glared," What do you think you are doing?"

"My God! Are you asleep? I doused you with two glasses of water! I thought you were sleep talking! So I had to wake you up! But you’re like a loop, repeating the same thing."

Aiden, watching from the sidelines, crossed his arms and fought back a smile. "Well," he murmured, barely containing his amusement, "this should be interesting." Being the youngest in the Hawk family and his mother’s only child, Nathan had been spoiled rotten, so seeing him like this felt oddly satisfying...

"You... you!" Nathan stammered, his face flushed with a mix of anger and disbelief.

Serena raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence as she poured another glass of water, the liquid shimmering in the light as she raised it up. "What was that? I couldn’t quite hear you over the sound of your own temper."

He stepped back instinctively, his eyes darting to the floor, still slick with remnants of cake and water and then at her, his hand already twitching to protect himself. "You think you can just throw water at me and get away with it?"

As she tipped the glass slightly, Nathan’s bravado faltered. He nearly slipped on the wet floor, his eyes widening in alarm as he put more distance between them. "Wait, wait!" he shouted, his voice rising in panic as he hurriedly retreated. "You’re insane!"

"Insane? You ruined my food! What did you expect! How dare you harm a cake?"

Nathan stumbled back toward the door, halting just before he exited. He turned with a fierce determination set on his face as he glared at her and then Aiden who was silently watching everything. "You think you can control my father using Aiden? You’re mistaken." His voice dropped to a low growl, as if the weight of his words could somehow intimidate her.

Aiden frowned. Nathan had always been blind to Charles’ fault. And because his brother was instinctively naive, he’d wanted to protect him. But Charles was now trying to use Nathan against them and the boy was not willing to listen...

"Even though our business partners are too scared of Aiden to help him, it doesn’t mean he’s helpless or that Aiden is invincible. Aiden’s biggest nemesis has invited our father for a meeting. And when Sidney strikes against Aiden, with father on his side, you will realise what a fool you are for meddling in our family’s affairs!"

With that Nathan walked out of the apartment, without realizing the grave mistake he’d made on his father’s behalf.

Aiden frowned at that name of Sidney Price and turned his head to look at Serena who was also watching the door with a thoughtful expression on her face.

Did she remember something. Did Sidney’s name strike a memory? Aiden had no idea but he dared not ask even as his own face paled at another thought. Today, Sidney had almost seen Serena. And then he’d invited Charles?

It couldn’t be right. Sidney hated his father as much as he did, so Sidney would not co operate with that man. But that did not mean he would not use Charles to get information. And if Charles talked about Serena or showed a picture.. No.. he had to contact Charles. But before that, there was another problem...Did Serena remember something?"

"Serena?", he called out tentatively.

She seemed to have forgotten he was there. As she glanced at him, she scowled and narrowed her eyes," Aiden, I need to ask you something."

Aiden nodded cautiously, already preparing to lie through his teeth. "Yeah?"

"Are you going to eat your cake?"

Aiden blinked, "Um, what?" he stammered, caught off guard. "I, uh—"

She gestured dramatically to the shattered remnants of her dessert, the frosting smeared across the floor like a chaotic canvas. "Because it looks like someone could use a slice of joy after dealing with that little monster. And honestly it is your fault. You were the one who did not let me get two slices of cake. Now, mine is gone and yours is still sitting in the refrigerator safely... Also, if you want to eat it, I’ll wrestle you." Serena raised the fork on the table, ready to battle him.

"Uh.. No. You can eat it. I agree it is my fault. I’ll go and finish up my work..." Aiden breathed a sigh of relief as he realized that Serena had not even paid attention to this matter about Sidney. Now he could take care of Charles, without any worry.

Unknown to him, he’d been relieved too soon, because even as Serena got the cake out of the refrigerator, she was thinking about the name... Sidney... Sidney Price.. She’d heard the name somewhere.
