Chapter 37: Glaring

"Why are you staring at me as if I’m a rabbit and you’re hungry?" Aiden asked, glancing up from the papers with a bemused expression.

Serena shrugged, giving him a look "Ha! As if I would eat a rabbit like you! I’d probably end up with indigestion or maybe even food poisoning."

Aiden sent her a look then, already missing the peace they had shared over the last few days.

So the sarcastic and snipy Serena had returned now that grandma was recovering. "Okay. Are you going to tell me why you are staring at me?"

"I wasn’t staring at you."

Aiden raised an eyebrow? "No? Then is there a ghost around here that I cannot see?"

She sent him a shocked look then and asked," How did you know that I can see ghosts?" Putting on a pitiful expression, she said," Aiden. It is a secret that I have been trying to accept. But ever since I have woken up after defying death, I have seen them..."

For a moment, there was silence as Serena gave him the most frightened look that she could muster.

Finally, Aiden sighed and shook his head," I think you should give up the idea of going into business and instead go into storytelling."

Serena giggled and shook her head," h, come on. You didn’t even flinch. I worked hard on that ghost story. Dar* it! Atleast you should have pretended to be scared or something!"

"Do you really think I can be scared of things like this?" Aiden asked, thoroughtly distraced from his own work as he focused on Serena.

"I bet I could come up with something that would make even you squirm." Serena challenged and Aiden shook his head, realizing that he had gotten off track by asking her a simple question.

"Okay okay! Do your best. I have to work."

Before he could return to work, however, Serena answered his question," Actually, I was thinking of your family and the dynamics. Are all rich families like that?"

Aiden’s eyes sharpened as he looked up," What do you mean?"

But Serena seemed to not realize it as she continued," I mean, your father and your aunt. They are..."

"Weak, selfish and greedy." Aiden supplied the answer as Serena paused looking for the right words. She looked surprised at his cold answer. He was talking about his father and yet, there was no emotion in that.

"Serena, there is no point on dwelling on someone’s personality or character as it cannot be changed."

"Really?" Serena cocked her head. Was he really as cold as he showed himself to be? Or was he hiding his hurt under a layer of this chill.

"You’re staring again." Aiden remarked as he sent her another look. Dam! She was making it difficult to focus. Everytime he tried to do soemthing she would keep looking at him and he would get distracted. He was reading this page for almost the tenth time!

"Actually, I was staring at something I gave you. My love bite. Who are you showing it off to now?"

Aiden looked up in surprise then. He’d not even realized that his shirt buttons had been undone. Quickly, he buttoned up his shirt and turned to her," Why are you ogling me?"

"Hey! Nothing there to ogle, okay? I was just thinking that since I have given you something, I should get something as well."

Aiden raised an eyebrow at that and turned his chair to look at her fully," In case you have forgotten, this was compensation."

Serena narrowed her eyes and pointed a finger," Touching the lips was a compensation. But the love bite was not!"

"Well, if you want it back, just tilt your head and I’ll bite you back."

"Ha! Are you a vampire that I should tilt my head for? No! I want a different compensation!"

"Well, you can directly tell me what you want instead of going about in such an indirect way!" Aiden gritted out, finally knowing why she had been beating aroudn the bush. She wanted something.

Serena sighed. He’d caught on.

"I..." Serena sighed and answered," I want to work but not for grandma. I’d rather have a smaller position to learn things than taking on a higher up job."

Aiden sighed. "Are you worried about the nepotism?"

"Yes. I... I don’t even know my background and qualifications. What if I make a mistake and end up doing something wrong or harmful?"

"Grandma won’t let you. And, there is another reason I want you there. I want you to keep an eye on her and..."

"Aiden Hawk! If you are planning to place me there as a snitch, then you can forget it! How can you venn think of using your wife like this? I should ask the ghost sitting next to you to hit you on the back of your head!"

Aiden rolled his eyes and raised his hands," Stop with your antics and stop misunderstanding me and putting words in my mouth. You do not have to snitch on grandma. You are going there as a glorified nanny. You will learn things from grandmother about business and also take care of her so that she does not over tire herself."

Serena nodded then," Oh! I guess that I can accept that. That was smart with you. Don’t worry! I’ll take care of grandmother once she returns to work."

Aiden raised an eyebrow. Any other woman would have been offended that he was offering her a position like that. But she looked as happy as a kid in disneyland. "You’re happy to be a nanny?

Serena nodded," Yes. For now. I am happy taking care of grandmother and doing menial jobs."

As Serena returned to her files contentedly, this time, it was Aiden was staring at her. Over and over again, he had seen this girl being satisfied with little little things. Was she always like this? Suddenly, he felt eager to know more about her. What was she like before the accident.
