Chapter 35: Family

"Serena. It is a pleasure to meet you. I believe we got off on the wrong foot but I am Aiden’s mother and you are his beloved wife so I’ll be the bigger person and not hold iyour violent nature against you."

Serena blinked in surprise at the woman who had now looped her arm through hers, raising an eyebrow. So, Mrs. Hawk was calling the incident where Aiden had been hit and accused as a "misunderstanding"? And now, she was graciously choosing not to hold a grudge? Serena could barely contain her irritation at the sheer hypocrisy. She hadn’t bothered to ask her if she was going to hold a grudge against Mrs. Hawk for her earlier actions.

With a smile that masked her annoyance, Serena gently extracted her arm from Mrs. Hawk’s grasp. "Mrs. Hawk, you are indeed too kind. I must say, your skincare routine is remarkable. For a woman of fifty, you certainly manage to look quite youthful."

Mrs. Hawk’s eyes widened in offense. "I’m actually only thirty years old," she said, her tone clipped and defensive.

Serena’s laughter bubbled up, and she reprimanded. "Oh, Mrs. Hawk, I might be younger than you are, but I do know a bit of math. Aiden is in his late twenties, so there’s no way you’re only thirty. Even though many women like to bend the truth about their age, it’s always best to do so sensibly. Imagine what kind of a light it puts on Aiden’s father. People might think he is a criminal."

"Well, I..." Before she could say anything, a stifled snicker came from behind them. Mrs. Hawk turned sharply to see Ella and Nathan, who were standing nearby, both barely able to contain their laughter. The realization hit her like a cold splash of water—Ella and Nathan had overheard the entire exchange and were now openly laughing at her expense.

The color in her cheeks deepened and she bristled with indignation," You know I am his step mother. You do not have to be so rude about it and rub my face in it.. I don’t know where Aiden found such a crude and violent wife."

As she said this, she turned to Aiden who had just entered as if really asking him where he found her. However, before he could say anything, Serena chuckled and walked over to him. Placing a proprietory hand on his chest, she casually moved the collar of his shirt and tapped lightly," But Aiden likes it when I’m violent."

Aiden caught her wrist before she could do more and then turned to glare at the woman," Mrs Hawk. I think I’ve made it clear that you are not my mother. So, please stop here. Serena, let me make the introductions. You know Mr. Hawk." Aiden’s father only stared back at Serena as she nodded at him and then turned her gaze to the meek woman beside him," This here is Grandmother’s youngest daughter, my aunt, Miranda and her husband Sylvester."

"And this here is Aileen Pratt, Sylvester’s God daughter."

Serena smiled thinly at the woman who ignored her and shamelessly moved to cling to Aiden’s other arm, "Aiden. Why didn’t you call me yesterday about grandma?"

Before either Serena or Aiden could gave a befitting reply, however, Sylvester spoke," Why don’t you tell your new wife the truth. Aileen. Is she just my god daughter? Have you forgotten she was also your fiance, before your wife trapped you into a marriage?

Aileen’s eyes flared with indignation as she pulled away from Aiden’s arm, glaring at Sylvester. "How dare you bring that up here, uncle!" she spat. "This is neither the time nor the place for such accusations. With grandma in the hospital, it is better to focus on what is more important."

Sylvester placed his hands on hips and shook his head,"No! today is the right time. Once Mother returns from the hospital, we won’t be able to hold Aiden accountable. He needs to apologize to you for marrying this vixen."

Aiden’s face darkened, "Sylvester, that’s enough. My personal life is none of your business. Also, I never had anything to do with Aileen, despite whatever schemes you and her father cooked up..."

"Do you think you can deny..."

Before the man could continue, Serena picked up a large metal plate from the table and threw it onto the floor, making a loud noise and causing almost everyone to jump.

As they stared in shock, she shrugged,"I am hungry. You guys want to fight, take it outside. If I hear one more word from any of you, the next glass will be on your heads.

"How dare you—"

Serena cut Sylvester off with a dismissive wave of her hand. "Save your indignation for someone who cares. Now, have a seat."

Aiden suppressed his smile as he watched everyone move to sit around the table obediently. It was at times like these that he could appreciate that his wife was not a docile little lily.

Amazed at everyone’s obedience, Ella approached Serena and asked in wonder," That was amazing. How did you know to..."

Serena shrugged and answered loudly," I had two stubborn dogs when I was young. They often got into fights. So, my vet told me that the best way to make them let go of each other without hurting was to make a loud sound."

This time, Aiden and Nathan both snickered, while Ella’s eyes widened in surprise, their laughter barely contained. The rest of the room, however, stared in horror, shocked at the comparison. Had they just been likened to dogs? There was only one person in the room who was not looking at Serena with interest.

Charles Hawk. His first and second impression of his son’s wife had been interesting to say the least. He looked at her carefully, taking in her beautiful and delicate face. She looked like a delicate flower, ready to be plucked but was so full of thorns. A sigh of regret passed over his face. If only he’d met her before she married Aiden...
