Chapter 199: Unravelling the Plot
Matthew Dawn didn’t know what to expect when Serena invited him to dinner and told him to keep it a secret. Now, as he waited in the dimly lit restaurant, tension simmered within him. He had thought about not showing up, but something compelled him to come and hear her out.
His nerves were frayed, his patience worn thin. A part of him wanted to simply turn his back on everything and vanish from this life that had become increasingly suffocating. The idea of leaving the country altogether and starting fresh somewhere far away felt more tempting with each passing day.
Everywhere he turned, his wife’s scandalous behavior stared back at him, plastered across headlines and whispered in every circle. It was hard enough to endure the humiliation, but maintaining a dignified silence had been almost unbearable. He had never loved Lydia—not even at the beginning. Their marriage had been a calculated arrangement, meant to appease his uncle, who insisted he needed Lydia’s family’s support to cement his future.
But Lydia had brought nothing but ruin. Spoiled, reckless, and utterly incapable of discretion, she had turned his life into a spectacle. Instead of a stable partnership, she had dragged him into her chaos, squandering his youth and tarnishing his name.
And now, thanks to Serena’s revelations, the truth about Lydia’s escapades was out for the world to see. At first, Matthew had been furious that Serena had taken such drastic action.
But as the days passed, he realized she had simply forced into the open what Lydia had spent years burying. If anything, Serena had done him a favor.
Lydia’s betrayal had been obvious for years, but now, with the truth exposed, Matthew saw a path forward. No one could force him to stay with her anymore. The facade of loyalty was shattered, and for the first time, he felt the faint glimmer of freedom.
All that remained now was to hear what Serena had to say—and to figure out what he would do next.
THe biggest reason that even now, he was hesitating was because of his daughters- Ava and Sophia.
Sophia was as spoilt as her mother and he did not hold out much hope for her. But Ava. She was spoilt as well. But she also knew an emotion that her mother did not. Loving someone with loyalty. He wanted to stay back for her. To protect her heart for Sidney and from Sidney as well. For that, he would do anything. Even if it meant abandoning his uncle and mother and shaking hands with Serena. But, first, he needed to make sure of the reason that Serena had invited him here for.
After all, he might be soft, but he was no fool. Serena was definitely upto something and his uncle was foolish in underestimating her. He would not make the same mistake.
Just then, Serena entered the room, her presence immediately commanding attention. Matthew stilled, instinctively rising to his feet as she approached. There was something different about her—a quiet strength, an air of authority that seemed to grow with each passing day. She reminded him more and more of Edwina, though he hated the thought. It wasn’t just her striking resemblance but the way she carried herself, exuding confidence and a sense of control that seemed almost unnerving.
"Serena," he greeted stiffly, his voice carefully measured.
"Uncle Matthew," she replied smoothly, her tone polite yet distant. "How are you holding up?"
Matthew’s lips curved into a grim smile, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes. "As well as can be expected under the circumstances. So," he continued, folding his arms as he gestured for her to take a seat, "why did you call me here? More troubles to throw my way?"
Serena didn’t miss the edge in his voice. She returned his smile, but hers carried a subtle challenge. Taking her seat with unhurried grace, she met his gaze evenly. "I think you already know why I’m here," she said. "Or at least, you’ve guessed. I’m here to offer you a truce."
Matthew’s shoulders stiffened, though he kept his expression neutral. A truce? That was the last thing he had expected. His thoughts raced as he watched her closely, her calm demeanor only adding to his unease.
Was his uncle’s plan actually working? Did she finally believed that they were somewhat innocent and his mother was behind the attacks. The thought unsettled him, but he forced himself to remain silent, unwilling to reveal anything prematurely. If Serena had pieced everything together—if she had realized his role in the tangled web of lies and manipulations—then so be it. He wouldn’t grovel for her forgiveness. Better to be blamed for the truth than for the countless other sins he hadn’t committed.
"Truce," he said at last, his tone flat. "That’s an interesting word. Care to elaborate on that?"
Serena shrugged." I will elaborate. But before that I need to know a few things. Have you begun the divorce proceedings with Lydia?"
He stilled. How did she know that was what he was planning? "No."
Serena smiled." Then it is better you do it fast. Once this matter dies, getting rid of her will be even more difficult. If you’d like I have some even worst videos of your wife and am willing to give them to you, to expediate your divorce. Would you want them?"
"Why are you doing this?"
"Because your wife mistreated me," Serena said, "I am not one to forgive such things easily, Uncle Matthew. But I’m also not here to drag this out unnecessarily. I’m here to offer you a solution—a way forward. So? Do you want it?"
Matthew’s brow furrowed, his unease deepening. "A solution," he echoed, his tone skeptical. "And what exactly does this solution entail?"
"Whatever you would like it to for your freedom. In return," Serena continued, "you’ll need to give me something."
His eyes narrowed, wary now. "What?"
Serena leaned back slightly, her composure unwavering as she let the weight of her words settle. "Governor Corrick."
The color drained from Matthew’s face, his jaw tightening as the name registered. "Governor Corrick?" he repeated, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "My Godfather?"
"Yes or your uncle. Whatever it is you want to call him," she confirmed.
