Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 155: Pushing
Chapter 155: Pushing
She swallowed, shaking the thought away. No. Not thinking of him. Not now. He was irrelevant, a fragment of her past she didn’t need to worry about anymore. Her focus had to stay on the here and now—on this family, on finding out who had murdered her father and grandmother, and who had tried to kill her.
She placed the frame back on the table and found herself wondering if she should really come back to live here. Maybe the sight of her moving back in would unnerve the killer, make them feel that their work was unfinished, and drive them into taking action. But the thought of living in this room again, in this house, still gave her the creeps.
She took a deep, steadying breath, turned back, and almost walked straight into a man standing there. She stopped herself just in time, looked up, and frowned. "What are you doing here?"
Sidney’s eyes met hers with a small, unreadable smile. "Of course I’m looking for you, Rena."
Rena rolled her eyes. "Of course. I just thought you came out here for a walk. Common sense says I meant, why are you here in my room?
"Sidney didn’t answer, but instead took a step closer, crowding her space. "Why do you insist on antagonizing Ava? You and I both know she isn’t the killer. So why can’t you just leave her alone?"
"Ohh," she replied with a smirk, her tone sharp. "Someone’s angry on behalf of his fiancée, I see."
"It’s not her I’m worried about," Sidney replied, his voice tense, his frustration barely held back. "It’s you. Why are you so determined to keep pushing them? What will it take for you to just... back off?"
Serena crossed her arms, her expression unyielding as she raised her chin defiantly. "Give me the identity of the killer." Her words came out sharp, each one a demand.
Sidney’s jaw tightened. "I told you already—I have suspects in mind, but no concrete evidence! When I do, you’ll be the first to know."
She narrowed her eyes, a glint of anger flashing there. "You have more than just suspects, Sidney. I think you already know who the killer is but are keeping it to yourself. I wouldn’t put it past you to use that information for your own gain. A fact that you’ve proven by threatening me about it!"
Sidney shook his head, exasperated, his patience thinning. "Stop it, Rena! I am not about to prove myself over and over to anyone. Not you, not your family, not anyone. I owe you nothing more than what I’ve already given. As for the ’threat’, I told you nothing but the truth! Until now, all these people believe you are married to Owen and cannot be bothered with him. Once they knew the truth, all bets would have been off."
"Fine. Then stop bothering me. And stay out of my business," she shot back icily. She glared at him, then took a step forward to brush past him, her hands pressing against his chest to shove him out of the way.
But Sidney moved faster, his hand closing around her wrist. With a quick, firm pull, he drew her toward him, and she stumbled, landing against his chest as his hand came around her waist.
She opened her mouth to protest, but he dipped his head, capturing her lips in a sudden, heated kiss. For a moment, she froze, feeling the surge of tension in his hold as he caught her and tried to deepen the kiss. It was the brush of his tongue against her lips that jolted her out of her shock. How dare he!
She pressed her hands firmly against his chest and shoved him back with all her strength. Her hand flew up, and with a sharp crack, she slapped him across the face, the sound echoing in the quiet greenhouse.
"Touch me like that again, and I swear, Sidney," she seethed, her voice low and cold, "I’ll make sure your future generations don’t get a chance to exist."
He stood there, momentarily stunned, his cheek reddening where her slap had landed, but Serena didn’t wait for him to respond. She turned on her heel, storming out of the greenhouse. As she stepped out, she wiped her mouth roughly with the back of her hand, muttering curses under her breath.
But Sidney remained unaffected as he gently pressed his lips together, stll savouring the softness of her mouth against him. As the door closed behind her, he turned around and watched her leave with a smile on his face. The next second, his cell phone vibrated and he looked down and smiled.
What perfect pictures. For the first one, she’d been about to push him away in irritation but according to the picture’s perfect angle it looked as if she was looking into his eyes, holding onto him.
The second one was of their perfect kiss. Serena’s hands gripped his shoulders, but the way her eyes were half-closed, the way his head blocked her expression—it all suggested a much more willing moment than it had been. Someone seeing the photo might assume she’d leaned into him, into their kiss.
The truth might have been much different, but he knew that perception, especially here, mattered more than reality.
Sidney slid his phone into his pocket, his face thoughtful, then glanced back to the greenhouse door. Serena would be furious if she ever saw these, but fury could only carry her so far. Once the photos reached the right eyes- Aiden’s eyes, the damage would be done and he would stop his investigation into the entire matter, assured that his ex- wife was not with him.
But, just as he was about to forward them to Aiden, he paused. Well, there was no hurry. He could do it when Aiden was in front of him, witness the scene of him seeing this thing with his own eyes.... With that, Sidney pushed the phone back into his pocket and walked out happily, unbothered about the bruise on his face.
