Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 150: Divorce
Chapter 150: Divorce
Serena stood still for a moment, collecting herself before she knocked firmly on Aiden’s office door. Just as her hand hovered, ready to push it open, the door swung inward, revealing Aiden standing there with a mischievous grin stretching across his face.
Before Serena could even react, his arm slipped around her waist, pulling her close in one smooth, effortless motion. Without hesitation, he pressed his lips to hers in a warm, familiar kiss. Serena tensed briefly, caught off guard, but Aiden didn’t seem to notice her hesitation. He lingered for a moment, savoring the kiss before releasing her and rubbing his nose affectionately against hers.
"Gosh, I needed that," he murmured, his voice soft and almost sleepy. He released her gently, then turned back to his desk, already bending down to focus on the open file in front of him. "So, what brings you to my office this late?"
He didn’t wait for an answer. Instead, he bent his head, immediately engrossed in the pages below him, marking notes with a pen, his gaze intense.
If he hadn’t been so distracted, he might have noticed the way she was acting. There was a tension in her posture, a slight hesitation, but Aiden didn’t catch it. He was simply happy she had come, and after a quick glance up at her scanning his office, he shrugged and continued to work.
"You’re not answering me, huh?" he continued, his voice taking on a teasing note. "Well, I think I know why you’re here tonight. You must’ve missed me, right? After all, I didn’t get a chance to swing by and see you tonight. Work’s been a killer today. Maybe you jinxed me with all that talk about how ’free’ I seemed lately." He sighed dramatically, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Had a pile of stuff to get through. But didn’t you have that meeting tonight? How’d it go? That’s why I thought not to drop by earlier. And don’t tell me you missed dinner?"
Serena paused, watching him with wary eyes. He hadn’t lifted his gaze from his file, yet she knew his questions weren’t as casual as they sounded. Aiden was sharp like that, always noticing details, even if it seemed like he wasn’t paying attention. She could already see the wheels turning in his mind, ready to call in food if she hadn’t eaten.
As she looked at his bowed head, for a moment, relief flickered across her face. His distraction would keep him from asking too many questions before she was ready to share everything. The sense of calm was short-lived, though, as her thoughts drifted to Mahi, her assistant. Despite every assurance, she’d been sure that Mahi would report back to Aiden the moment she got wind of Serena’s plans. But Mahi had promised she’d only answer to her, keeping her movements entirely private.
Serena had felt guilty then. Okay. Who was she kidding? She’d felt guilty even before that. After all, Aiden had been there for her, introduced Mahi to her, and now she was going to lean on that trust to set things into motion that Aiden would soon see coming. She exhaled slowly. But this was what she needed to do. And he, of all people should understand that business was business. Hadn’t he married her to appease Grandma so that she would not make someone else her heir?
"So," she said, taking a seat opposite him, "what’s got you so busy?"
"Just a few issues with the investors. Nothing you need to worry about."
"I wasn’t worried." Serena replied, arching an eyebrow. Her comment made him look up, and he gave her a small smile.
"Sweet as honey, as always. I guess, the meeting didn’t go well?"
"It went well enough." Serena paused, staring at him, weighing her words before deciding to be direct. She didn’t think she could afford any dilly dallying. "Look, I need to talk to you. If you could put the work aside for a—"
Before she could finish, the phone on his desk rang, cutting through her tense thoughts. She stiffened as he picked it up without hesitation, his casual expression shifting as he listened to the voice on the other end. Aiden’s body stiffened, his face darkening with tension.
"Was anyone hurt?" His voice was sharper now, his fingers tightening around the phone’s edge. A few moments of silence passed before he muttered a curse under his breath. "I’ll be there as soon as I can. Get the car prepared."
He put the phone down, his expression now shadowed with worry and frustration as he turned to Serena. "There’s been a problem at one of the new lab sites. A few of the technicians were hurt—nothing too serious, I hope, but I need to head over there now. I’ll see you later, okay?"
As he moved toward the door, Serena’s hand shot out, grabbing his wrist firmly "Aiden, wait. I need to talk to you. Now."
He frowned, impatience flickering in his eyes, but there was a hint of curiosity as well. "What is it, Serena? Can’t it wait?"
Her gaze drifted to the file she’d placed on his desk, her fingers tightening around the edge as she gestured toward it. "It can’t. I know you’re busy, so I’ll be direct. Just sign those."
Aiden glanced down at the file, confusion knitting his brows as he picked it up. "What is this?" he asked, beginning to open the folder, his eyes moving across the top of the pages. But Serena didn’t need to see his reaction—her voice cut through the silence, resolute and firm.
"Let’s get a divorce."
The room went still. Aiden froze, the folder halfway open, his fingers pausing as her words sank in. "What did you say?"
Serena took in a deep breath and cast him a look, "I didn’t think there was anything wrong with your hearing. I wish to divorce you, Aiden Hawk. You are of no use to me."
