Falling For My Accidental CEO Husband -
Chapter 124: I See
Chapter 124: I See
"So, Aiden Hawk, you are neither my friend nor my family. We are husband and wife in name only and that is all we will be. As it happens, I am also currently in need of a husband, and hence I will not be dissolving the contract. But that is it. I... I would like us to not see each other again until the divorce..."
"I see." Aiden finally spoke up after a moment of silence.
His voice was calm, detached even, and it sent a ripple of confusion through her. Serena’s breath hitched. What does that mean? Did he just agree with her? Or not? She searched his face, looking for any hint of what he might be feeling, but his expression remained maddeningly unreadable.
Not knowing what else to do, she nodded stiffly, more to herself than to him. The room felt suddenly too small, too stifling. Desperate to escape the tense atmosphere, she moved to get off the bed, choosing to slide down the other side so she wouldn’t have to pass by him.
As her feet hit the floor, she couldn’t resist one last glance at him. Aiden hadn’t moved an inch, still sitting in that same rigid posture, his face as blank as it had been before. His indifference made her stomach twist. Why was he acting so strangely?
She fidgeted with the hem of her sleeve, the tension gnawing at her. "If you’d like," she finally offered hesitantly, her voice softer now, "I can explain things to Grandmother... about us."
Another beat of silence. Then, without looking at her, he said, "Okay."
Serena blinked, taken aback by the simplicity of his response. Her confusion deepened. Okay? Did he want her to explain things to grandmother, or was he just agreeing to everything.
Almost as if to confuse her further, Aiden’s gaze shifted, and without any change in his impassive expression or further response, he gestured toward a box on the side table.
"You’ll need clothes to freshen up. I brought them," he said, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather.
Serena stared at the box, her thoughts scrambling. Clothes? The unexpected gesture made her pause. For a moment, she wasn’t sure how to respond. Her mind was still racing from their conversation where she had just told him that they were not related.
"Thank you," she murmured, though it felt like the words barely escaped her lips. Still confused, Serena took the box and, without another glance at him, made her way toward the bathroom.
As she reached the door, she hesitated. Turning slightly, she offered a parting glance, trying once more to gauge his reaction. "Goodbye, Aiden. Contact me when you’re ready for the divorce," she said, her voice carefully neutral. Then she slipped inside the washroom, the door closing softly behind her.
Once inside, she placed the box on the floor and leaned against the sink, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her mind felt like a whirlpool of conflicting emotions, and she struggled to make sense of it all. Was she relieved that he had agreed to break things off so easily and was being so accomodating? Or was she sad? At least if he had not found her, she would have at least been able to fool herself that she had someone beside her when things got too lonely.
But then, she shrugged at her own thoughts. This was her foolishness showing. There was no need for something like this. There was going to be no time for her to feel lonely. So, there would be no need for her to think of him.
Pushing the confusion and her impractical thoughts aside, she refocused her thoughts on more practical matters—Today’s tasks. Where was she going today? Right... NVidia Industries.
It was time to take over as the rightful heir of the throne and show a few people their rightful places. Or rather, let them learn what it was like to feel crushed. They had probably never expected something like this.
With her thoughts clearer now, she finally opened the bathroom door, expecting to find the room empty. But as she stepped out, her feet froze mid-step.
Aiden was still there.
Sitting in the exact same position, as if he hadn’t moved at all since she’d left.
"What are you still doing here?" She finally asked. Was he in some kind of a shock?
He looked at her then, and something in his gaze warned her that she might not be prepared to whatever he was going to say next.
Aiden rose from his spot on the chair, his movement deliberate as he walked towards her, his eyes never leaving hers. Before she could react, he was beside her, his hand reaching for hers. Serena’s breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she wasn’t sure if she should pull away or let him lead. But there was something in his calm demeanor—something unsettlingly sure—that made her pause.
Without a word, Aiden gently guided her to the chair near the window. She sat, almost too stunned to protest. Her mind was racing with confusion, but her body seemed to be acting on autopilot, obeying his silent command.
Reaching for the towel wrapped loosely around her damp hair, he deftly unwrapped it, and Serena’s heart quickened. What was he doing? This wasn’t part of the plan, this wasn’t supposed to happen. She had just told him they were nothing but strangers bound by a contract, and yet...
Before she could finish the question, his fingers brushed the back of her neck, sending a shiver down her spine. The warmth of his touch lingered against her skin, and she found herself swallowing the rest of her words.
Gently, he untied her hair, letting it fall loosely around her shoulders. He picked up the towel again and began to dry her hair, his movements slow, methodical, and far too intimate for the distance she had just tried to establish between them.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Aiden spoke," We might not be friends or family, Serena. And we are indeed husband and wife in name only. But we are partners. The day you stood up for me, you sealed your fate. There is no way I am going to let you fight any fight alone. As partners, our losses and profits are all shared."
