Chapter 118: Miss

"Miss Serena is here.", the housekeeper announced with a flourish and Serena had to suppress her surprise. Miss Serena? What happened to ’useless girl’? This much respect might give her indigestion...And then she stopped short.

She glanced around the round table, trying not to laugh at how absurd it all felt. It was her first time meeting this group of so-called family members. At the head sat the Evil Queen(her dear grandmother who had summoned her here). On her right was the Evil Aunt, who seemed to have perfected a scowl and had been the one to bless her with the epithet-’useless girl’. Next to her was, of course, the Evil Cousin, who looked like she was plotting world domination—or at least, Serena’s humiliation. Ava was good at humiliating people, after all.

Then her eyes landed on two pot-bellied men who bore an uncanny resemblance to her father. Evil uncles, probably, she thought, stifling a snort. The one sitting next to the evil aunt was probably her husband which meant her older uncle Matthew. That means the other one was probably Daniel...

With a raised eyebrow, she turned to the ’queen’. "You summoned me?" Serena asked.

Edwina frowned. She’d seen the multitude of expressions that had flitted across her face as she looked around the table.

"Yes. Today, the entire family is eating dinner together. So, you will be joining us."

"Ohh? Well, I...I’m sorry. I didn’t know that. I’ve already eaten.." With that, Serena was ready to make her escape when the old woman’s voice echoed," Stop right there. Take a seat."

Serena stopped. What was it with the old woman? Just the day before yesterday, she had callled her to her study and blasted into her for no reason. And now this. Was she bored out of her mind or soemthing and looking for entertainment in her? But tonight! She was not going to give anyone the satisfaction of getting a raise out of her. So, she gave a thin smile and then quietly went towards her grandmother, and sat in her lap.

As Serena sat down in her grandmother’s lap, the reaction was immediate.

The Evil Queen—sorry, Grandmother—went rigid as a board, the Evil Aunt( aunt Lydia) gasped, her scowl transforming into a look of pure horror, as if Serena had committed some sort of medieval crime. Ava, the Evil Cousin, dropped her fork, eyes wide, utterly speechless for once. The two pot-bellied uncles choked on their drinks, spluttering as they watched the scene unfold. While the boys (her cousins) simple stared wide eyed.

"What...what are you doing?" Edwina’s voice cracked with disbelief.

"Well," Serena began, adjusting herself like she was settling into a comfy chair, "you told me to sit, and there wasn’t an empty chair left, so..." She shrugged, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

The entire room seemed to collectively stop breathing. Her uncle Matthew cleared his throat, trying to recover his composure. "You could’ve pulled up another chair. Or asked the housekeeper to do it..."

Serena blinked innocently. "Oh, but I thought this was what grandmothers do! You know, like in the movies—where they make their grandchild sit on their lap and feed them all the food with all that love and affection?" She glanced up at her grandmother with exaggerated sweetness. "I figured you wanted to dote on me or something like claim that you are too thin and you need to eat and all that..."

There was a deafening silence, followed by the Evil Aunt muttering, "Is she serious?" while the boys stifled what sounded like a strangled laugh.

Serena gave a sachharine smile to her grandmother before getting ready to jump off her lap with a look of exaggerated sadness," If you don’t want to dote on me then I guess, I’ll just go..."

However, before she could jump off, Edwina Dawn cast a look at the maids hovering in the background, gesturing to bring a chair around... And caught Serena’s shoulder. "You are already a teenager. Sitting in my lap is not needed. I can dote on you even when you are not in ly lap."

At that moment, if someone had told the Dawn family that the sky outside had turned green, they would have believed it. The matriarch of the family was actually cajolling the young girl...

The rest of the dinner went silently, because once the food was on the table, Serena forgot all about her rebellion and started to eat her full. So, what if she had assured herself that she was okay? Getting good food was a blessing.

After the dinner, as the people cleared the table, Edwina Dawn turned to Serena,"How are you settling in? Do you like your room?"

Serena stilled as she turned her head to look at her grandmother. Really? Her room? What room? But there was no way she was going to give the old woman the satisfaction of complaining about her living conditions.

Before she could respond, however, Aunt Lydia, chimed in. "Of course she’s liking her room," Lydia sneered. "It’s probably bigger than that little hovel she was living in before."

Serena’s jaw tightened, but she kept her expression neutral. The woman was trying to save her own bu** and even then did not fail to take a dig at her?

Before she could go and give dear Aunt Lydia a piece of her mind, Edwina said, "Lydia," her voice like ice, "I didn’t ask you, did I? If you can’t refrain from answering questions not addressed to you, perhaps you should remain silent."

Lydia’s face flushed crimson, but she bit back a retort, clearly not willing to challenge the old woman.

Serena, however, wasn’t about to let the moment pass.

"Oh, don’t worry, Grandmother," she said, her voice sweet but with a hint of mischief dancing in her eyes. "The decor in my room is simply wonderful. In fact, it’s so unique that I think every member of the household should experience something similar. I’d be happy to make sure you all enjoy it just as much as I have."

"Well," Serena said, "if you’ll excuse me, I’m feeling quite full. Thank you for the lovely dinner." With that, she turned on her heel and walked out of the dining room not knowing what was going to happen in the near future.
