Chapter 104: Why?

Serena stared at the man pacing in front of her, his footsteps quick and restless, as if propelled by invisible wheels under his feet. His voice filled the room, but she barely registered the words. Instead, a strange buzzing sound hummed in her ears, drowning out everything except the erratic rhythm of her own heartbeat.

Sidney Price. She knew this man well. Of course she knew him because he was Aiden’s half brother and all that... but seeing his face... she also knew who he was other than that. Why his name had felt familiar... Sidney was her long lost dear childhood friend turned self proclaimed ’protector.’

A single glimpse of him, and her memories had come flooding back—like a dam breaking, rushing in with a force that still left her dizzy. She could barely keep herself grounded, her head spinning with fragments of the past. It was why she’d fainted. And now, as she returned to consciousness, she couldn’t help but stare at him with resentment. Why did he have to always interfere in her life?

"...Serena? Are you even listening?" Sidney’s voice cut through the haze, his tone sharp with impatience.

She blinked, realizing he’d stopped pacing and was now standing directly in front of her, his hands gripping her arms firmly. The pressure of his touch pulled her from her thoughts, and her eyes snapped to his.

"Let go of me," she said, her voice cold and clear.

Sidney froze, his face flickering with surprise before he quickly released her, stepping back as if he’d touched something hot. "I’m sorry," he muttered, looking flustered. "I didn’t mean to cross any boundaries with you. Are you okay? You fainted so suddenly, I did not even get a chance to ask you how you were doing? Have you been sick? Is that why you’ve lost weight and never came to see me? Okay, look I am really sorry, okay? Can we talk?"

Serena barely acknowledged the apology, offering only a brief nod before turning away from him, trying to regain her composure. Her heart was still racing, but she wouldn’t let him see how unsettled she was. How she had not remembered her past until now. How, even now her head was threatening to explode from the pressure of all the voices and memories bouncing around in her head.

"What was the meaning of initiating this meeting? Didn’t I tell you the last time we met, that things were over between us? That I never wanted to see you. And yet, you used Ella to contact me?"

Sidney hesitated for a moment, then finally spoke up, his voice quieter now, but no less insistent. "I... you were angry at the time, Rena. I thought you would be over it by now... And I.. how did you end up with Aiden? I thought you were in love with that Owen? You even left everything and everyone for him... You even left... me for him."

"That’s none of your concern," Serena replied flatly as she glanced at Sidney," And I didn’t leave you because of Owen. Thinlk what you did, Sidney."

Sidney frowned, frustration creeping into his expression. "Serena, you can’t avoid this forever. People are talking, and I did what I had to save you! If I had not taken you to my room that night..."

"Enough." Her voice was sharper, cutting through his words like a blade. She stepped forward, meeting his gaze with steely resolve. "My marriage is not up for discussion. And neither is the past. If that’s the reason you came here, you can leave."

Sidney sighed, clearly agitated but resigned. He shook his head, raking a hand through his hair. "Fine. I won’t push it. Not now. But I hope one day, you’ll give me a chance to explain." He paused, his eyes searching hers. "And about your marriage to Aiden... is it really true?"

"Will you please stop harping on about the same things?" Serena snapped, her patience worn thin. "I’ve said all I need to say. My silence should have been the answer you were looking for."

Sidney stared at her for a moment longer, as if trying to find something in her expression that would give him hope. But when he spoke, his voice was low and almost sad. "You’ve changed, Rena," he said softly, as though mourning the girl she used to be.

Serena scoffed, bitterness curling on her lips. Of course she had changed. After everything she had learned, after everything that had happened before her accident—how could she not have?

"I’ll be leaving now, Sidney," she said, her tone dismissive as she turned her back to him once again. "In the future, let’s pretend we’re strangers."

Serena was halfway to the door when Sidney’s voice called out again, this time with a weight that stopped her in her tracks.

"Wait—Rena, you have to come back tonight. We’re reading Grandma’s will." His tone was serious, no longer layered with the frustration or regret that had colored his earlier words, almost cold.

She hesitated, her hand hovering over the doorknob, but she didn’t turn around. "And?" she asked, her voice detached, even though her tired mind had already supplied the answer. How could hse have missed something like this? Of course she knew the answer to that, and yet, she could not help but feel guilty. Her grandmother had died and she had never gone back to visit her.

Sidney stepped closer, though not as invasively as before. He spoke more softly now, almost cautiously. "You didn’t forget, did you?" he asked, an odd look crossing his face, as if he couldn’t decide whether he should be worried or annoyed. "Grandma passed away eighteen months ago. Her will stated that none of the benefits would be distributed until then... today marks the end of those eighteen months."

"I don’t need you to remind me. I’ll be there." Serena asked before opening the door, but Sidney was not willing to let go," What about Aiden? Will you be bringing him along as well? Does he know your connection to us? Does he realized who you are?"

Serena cast Sidney a side long glance before walking out of the door, not intending to answer any of the questions.
