Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Be Good to You Now.
The banquet ended late at night, and this time Shen Zhiyi didn’t leave early. Wang Feifei introduced her to a few retired seniors, among whom was an actress who had been made famous by Director Meng. Having just finished filming a movie with Meng, Zhiyi spoke with her at length and even exchanged contact information.
"Don’t think that just because someone has retired they’ve lost their connections in the industry," Wang Feifei mentioned after Zhiyi finished talking to the veteran actress, "I’ll get in touch with her later to see if there are any good scripts I can recommend for you."
By this time, the banquet was well underway with the leaders having left, leaving only the company’s own artists to chat and network.
Shen Zhiyi nodded, "If the script is suitable, I would like to join the production as soon as possible."
It had been more than half a month since she wrapped up her last film, and these days she had been busy attending business events and shooting variety shows, which she found more tiring than acting. She preferred the atmosphere on set.
"Okay," Wang Feifei replied, "I’ll look for some scripts for you as soon as possible. I’ve heard that several production crews are currently holding auditions."
After the banquet ended and she returned to the hotel, Shen Zhiyi got another room card from Xiaodong and found Pei Yu already waiting for her when she entered the room.
She had had a bit to drink, and was slightly tipsy, tilting her head slightly, "Hmm, Mr. Pei has arrived quite early."
Seeing that she was a little out of it, Pei Yu walked over, wrapped his arms around her waist to prevent her from falling, and responded in a low voice, "I hurried over as soon as I received Miss Shen’s invitation, waiting in advance."
Shen Zhiyi had a faint scent of perfume on her, and Pei Yu kissed the top of her head, his voice tinged with mirth, "Miss Shen seems quite experienced in handing out room cards. Do you do this often?"
Already feeling tired and having had some drinks, not wanting to exert too much energy, Shen Zhiyi casually hooked her arms around his shoulders, putting all her weight on him, and drawled, "Not as often as Chairman Pei, I bet."
Such direct methods of giving wine and room cards were certainly not new to Pei Yu. She had seen it happen a few times, and there were undoubtedly many more instances she had not witnessed.
"Framing me?" Pei Yu picked her up, letting her lean against his shoulder, "I haven’t accepted any."
He had only come to the banquet to see her. Unable to see her, his mind was full of thoughts of her, and he had paid no attention to the clearly provocative drinks.
Shen Zhiyi hummed lightly, then brought up another matter, "I just found out today from Fu Songzhi that—"
Thinking that it had taken her so long to find out, she bit Pei Yu’s chin, completing her sentence, "you are my boss?"
Pei Yu chuckled, knowing she would mention this, "I wanted to tell you myself, but Songzhi beat me to it."
"You wouldn’t have told me," Shen Zhiyi was much more familiar with him now, not so easily deceived, and directly called him out, "Even if I asked you how you were able to attend our company’s banquet, you would have found some excuse to fob me off."
No sooner had she finished speaking than she felt Pei Yu’s chest vibrate with a few muffled chuckles, saying in a pleased tone, "So you understand me this well?"
"Quite well," he adjusted Shen Zhiyi a bit higher, holding her more securely, and smiled lightly, "You can even guess what I’m thinking."
"Don’t change the subject," Shen Zhiyi touched his chin where the teeth marks had already faded away, "Tell me, why did you hide it from me?"
"It wasn’t intentional," Pei Yu laughed as she touched him, turning his head to rub against her palm, "You didn’t even want to go to Songjian Media, so I doubt you’d want to join another company I have a stake in. Thus, after finding out you were going to sign with this company, I didn’t mention that I was one of the directors."
She didn’t know about this matter, and it had no impact on her career development, so Pei Yu had no particular reason to bring it up.
"I rejected Songjian half a year ago," Shen Zhiyi muttered under her breath, "now that you’re telling me, it’s not going to affect me anyway."
Times had changed; their relationship was nothing like it was when they first signed with the company.
"I know," Pei Yu certainly understood her meaning, but he was always extremely cautious when it came to matters related to Shen Zhiyi, and this had never changed, "Isn’t it simpler not to mention it? I wouldn’t have to worry about you overthinking."
"I would have found out sooner or later," Shen Zhiyi didn’t quite agree with his way of handling it, "Like this time, I heard about it from someone else, didn’t I?"
She added, "It’s not me who overthinks. Mr. Pei, you’re the one who thinks too much, imagining me as both good and bad."
She had initially rejected Songjian Media, which was under Pei’s name, considering that they might part ways in the future and it would be difficult to sever the ties completely, not because she wanted to draw a clear line with him. Once their relationship grew intimate, their lives and careers would be closely intertwined; there was no way to completely separate the two, and she didn’t mind Pei Yu being her "boss".
However, she felt slightly upset that she hadn’t heard about it directly from Pei Yu.
Stepping into the restroom, Pei Yu placed her on a chair and watched her remove her makeup in front of the mirror, casting him a slightly reproachful glance as she spoke, her eyes brimming with moisture.
He laughed nonchalantly, lazily saying, "Miss Shen, it’s you who are mean to me."
As he spoke, he began to recount the misdeeds Shen Zhiyi had committed against him, "Unavailable for weeks when you’re busy, not keeping your promise of a daily phone call, withholding a kiss after not seeing each other for so long..."
He spoke earnestly as if airing genuine grievances, the kind that a wife might have about an irresponsible husband. Yet, his tone was indifferent, his clear, indifferent eyes contrasting drastically with his words, leaving Shen Zhiyi unsure whether he was joking or being serious.
She felt a bit guilty being accused like this, after all, he was telling the truth. She didn’t have the same energy as Pei Yu and would neglect him when busy, too exhausted to even say an extra word, let alone make a phone call.
After cleaning her face, Shen Zhiyi looked up to kiss his lips, her eyes curling with a smile, her voice soft, "Then I’ll be good to you now."
"Hm?" Pei Yu held her waist, gladly accepting her kiss with a smile, "Then Miss Shen should try harder, a little bit of goodness is not enough."
He was greedy.
"Oh," Shen Zhiyi blinked, her cool, moist fingers slipping under the hem of his shirt, caressing his waist and abdomen. Recalling the comment a woman had made about him at the dinner that evening, she couldn’t help but smile and purposely said, "Mr. Pei has such a great figure, even better than a male model."
Indeed, if he were actually a male model, there would probably be no shortage of fawning women trailing behind him.
Pei Yu raised an eyebrow, their lips parting slightly, and as he gently wiped away the water from the corner of her lips with his fingertip, he leisurely asked, "Has Miss Shen seen many male models?"
Shen Zhiyi: "..."
