Chapter 103: Chapter 103 I Want to Change My Uncle!
Duan Jiaze was a child of robust initiative, so after Shen Zhiyi went to freshen up, he made a phone call to Pei Yu—persistently calling until the call connected.
The screen was pitch black, and Duan Jiaze said in confusion, "Uncle, I think your phone is broken."
Having tossed his phone aside, Pei Yu couldn’t be bothered and replied with extreme indifference, "Hmm."
The child must have just finished bathing, having changed into a one-piece pajama printed with dinosaurs. Without a doubt, it must have been bought by Shen Zhiyi. Thinking of this, Pei Yu sneered at himself in self-mockery.
She had never bought clothes for him.
Growing more impatient, the clink of a wine glass against the edge of the table made a crisp sound, and he said coolly, "Speak if you have something to say."
"Alright."
Duan Jiaze believed he had something significant to discuss. His little face was especially serious, as the education he had received from a young age taught him that negotiation should be face to face to show respect. But since his uncle wasn’t cooperative, he regretfully had to skip this part.
He stated gravely, "Uncle, I want to be with the girl I like."
"Do you agree, Uncle?"
Having his own affairs far from settled, Pei Yu couldn’t care less about the little brat’s love life, "Do as you wish."
He reached out to end the call.
But Duan Jiaze’s voice came through again, "That’s great, I’m off to tell Zhizhi!"
His fingertip paused just in time, hovering over the screen, Pei Yu looked up, his gaze cold and unusually hesitant, "What did you say?"
"I want to be with Zhizhi. Uncle, Zhizhi said she’s not Auntie, so it’s okay to be together."
Proud of his own cunning intelligence, the child shook his head, "Uncle, you agreed."
Leaning slightly forward, hands clasped together, Pei Yu finally gave the screen a proper look. Not knowing whether he found it absurd or whether it angered him, he slowly chuckled twice, his eyebrows and eyes narrowing, saying without any mercy, "I did not agree."
"Uncle!" Duan Jiaze yelled, "You can’t go back on your word, you’re a liar!"
Shen Zhiyi tried so hard to maintain his image in the child’s heart, but the person in question couldn’t care less.
Pei Yu said coldly, "Duan Jiaze, don’t get too cocky. I said she is your aunt."
"She’s not," Duan Jiaze said, now disliking him, "Zhizhi said she’s not."
"Sooner or later she will be," Pei Yu’s expression remained unchanged, his demeanor as confident as if sitting at a negotiating table, his voice firm, "She definitely will be."
In terms of mental acuity, Duan Jiaze truly inherited it from the Pei family. He promptly retorted, "But she’s not right now."
The blunt words pierced through Pei Yu’s self-deception, leaving his face completely expressionless. After a brief silence, he leaned back in his chair, his posture shifting from its initial aggressiveness to a relaxed composure; his tone also softened, "What of it? Is there anything I can’t have?"
In everyone’s eyes, Pei Yu was powerful, composed, and superior. Anything he desired, he was sure to obtain, a belief that the still-childlike Duan Jiaze held without any doubt.
Pei Yu gave him no room to maneuver, "She is your aunt, she must be, she can only be."
The child, overpowered by such a Pei Yu, lost his confidence. After a moment, he shockingly declared.
"I want a different uncle."
The statement was too absurd, causing Pei Yu to not even bother showing any emotional reaction, "Is that so? How do you plan to change that?"
All of the Pei family sons were either incarcerated or missing, and his third sister was no fool either. A woman fallen from grace wasn’t appealing to her, and Duan Jiaze’s education had always only involved uncle Pei Yu.
He sneered and tugged at the corner of his lip, "Do you want your grandpa to give you another uncle?"
Duan Jiaze stared straight at the phone screen, and even though he was very afraid of Pei Yu, he still bravely expressed his fanciful thoughts.
"Zhizhi is my aunt, and her husband would be my uncle."
He said loudly, "I’ll call her husband ’uncle.’ You’re not her husband, so you’re not my uncle either!"
After saying that, he bravely hung up the phone.
The child’s voice was loud, and it echoed in the empty living room. After a few seconds of silence, Pei Yu picked up his drink, set it down, and did this several times before finally slamming his glass away in frustration.
"Bang—"
The phone was thrown to the ground, emitting a crisp sound. Shen Zhiyi just came out of the bathroom and witnessed this scene, puzzled, "Jiaze, why did you throw the phone?"
Duan Jiaze wrapped himself with a blanket, shivering, "I’m afraid uncle will crawl out and hit me."
"That won’t happen," Shen Zhiyi chuckled.
This phone was broken, so she found a new one for Duan Jiaze to play with, without scolding him for causing trouble.
Duan Jiaze was particularly touched and disheartened, such a nice girl had to be his aunt.
After being upset for a while, he cheered up. Aunt it was, then. He could take this opportunity to change his uncle—he wanted a good uncle!
"Zhizhi," snuggling into Shen Zhiyi’s arms in his dinosaur pajamas, Duan Jiaze curiously inquired, "What kind of boys do you like?"
Having not heard the previous conversation between the nephew and his uncle, Shen Zhiyi thought it was the "marry me" Duan Jiaze speaking and couldn’t help but laugh at his question, answering offhand, "Hmm... I like tall ones who have a nice smile when they laugh."
She hoped that Duan Jiaze would grow up to be that kind of person as well.
Duan Jiaze knew very few adults, and even fewer met the criteria. After Shen Zhiyi’s answer, the first person he thought of was the ’bad uncle’ he had met during the day.
Although it was despicable of that uncle to call him fat, Duan Jiaze wasn’t one to throw a tantrum over nothing. Pinching his own little belly, he sadly admitted that the man had only spoken the truth, and telling the truth was a virtue. He shouldn’t dislike someone for that reason alone.
Mainly because, when compared to the hateful Pei Yu, being called fat didn’t seem like such an intolerable flaw.
"Zhizhi," he suddenly asked, "what was the name of the uncle we met today?"
"Hm?" Not understanding why the topic changed again, Shen Zhiyi told him Meng Qiming’s name, "Do you like that uncle?"
Duan Jiaze nodded earnestly, albeit reluctantly, "Yes, I like him."
He handed over the new phone, "I want his phone number."
During the day, Duan Jiaze couldn’t stay away from Meng Qiming fast enough, yet children’s moods indeed change at the drop of a hat. Shen Zhiyi found Meng Qiming’s phone number and cautioned him, "Don’t just call people randomly, it’s not nice to bother them."
"Okay."
He agreed readily, but he was definitely not going to be obedient. Duan Jiaze felt that changing his uncle was a major event. Disturbing that ’bad uncle’ for this cause was forgivable, so he lied without any guilt.
He had to strive hard, to urge that ’bad uncle’ to work together, aiming to accomplish the great task of changing his uncle as soon as possible.
Ah, offending a child can lead to dire consequences.
