Extreme Cold Era: Shelter Don't Keep Waste -
Chapter 58: Alternative Locations for the Shelter
Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Alternative Locations for the Shelter
With inspiration and ideas, Perfikot quickly developed a design concept for the dungeon.
However, this is just a rough idea; designing a dungeon that can accommodate thousands of residents without issues is not an easy task.
At least how to provide water and fire use for so many people is a very important design question.
It’s known that in this era, even large cities like Langton City haven’t popularized tap water. Most districts supply water through neighborhood supply stations to adjacent streets or residential areas.
Local residents must fetch water at fixed times every day. If there’s a large family or high water usage, they must learn to store water and conserve water.
Moreover, in this era, there is little concept of hygiene concerning drinking water, and diseases spreading through rivers, sewers, or even supply pipelines is normal.
Designing a reliable dungeon? It’s not just about digging trenches.
So Perfikot didn’t spend too much time on the dungeon project since it’s just an idea.
She still preferred to spend more time scouting suitable locations to build shelters, analyzing available data from the surveying company to determine which locations are ideal for construction, and how to maintain operations once the shelters are built.
Simply constructing a shelter isn’t difficult, but ensuring its normal operation and meeting all residents’ needs for food, life, and living is a nearly impossible task.
At least Perfikot feels a headache just thinking about these things.
Fortunately, the Empire’s survey company provided very detailed information, offering Perfikot substantial help.
"Madam Baroness, after our discussions, we have selected fifteen possible locations." A survey team member handed their discussion results to Perfikot and explained: "According to your requirements, these places were chosen as close as possible to regions rich in metal and coal resources, and near coasts or rivers, so that ports can be built for convenient material transportation.
Besides this, we specially picked areas that might have geothermal resources based on your request.
As for this aspect, the survey company hasn’t done much, so we could only choose areas with volcanoes, hot springs, or nearby sulfur, volcanic rocks.
After a rigorous selection process, these fifteen locations remain for your review."
With that, the survey team member handed a compiled document to Perfikot.
Taking the document, Perfikot began to read seriously and moved to a spread-out map, directly comparing to find the places chosen by the survey team.
While Perfikot looked at the map, the survey team members watched with a bit of trepidation and nervousness, like students facing an examiner during final exams.
It’s known that this is a super project invested by the Royal Family. Even for the Empire’s survey company, it’s rare to get such a project, making these survey team members, though unaware of the truth, still ordered by the company executives to treat this project seriously and earnestly.
After confidently picking fifteen perfect target locations, they weren’t very optimistic.
Due to the incident with dismissing the Imperial Guard Knight, many on the ship gossiped that this Baroness is actually a temperamental young girl.
Her mood is unpredictable, and she might suddenly flare up over trivial matters like forgetting to add milk to her coffee or not using respectful terms while greeting her.
Though until now, none in the survey team has been scolded by Perfikot, the vivid rumors lead most of them to rather believe them.
Hence, they always cautiously avoid offending her while facing Perfikot.
It’s a joke; an Imperial Guard Knight was dismissed for disrespecting her, not to mention them, the lesser figures?
They are just humble workers earning meager salaries through hard work from the company. Losing this lucrative job would make it tough to support their families.
Naturally, Perfikot wasn’t aware of the ship rumors about her, or even if she was aware, she wouldn’t react.
After all, rumors spread more the more you try to forbid them. Eradication is impossible.
Even with strict measures, causing public reproof, it can’t be prohibited.
Therefore, Perfikot is certainly unconcerned with these matters, as for the old steward Foster?
He has his own judgment on these matters; unless it damages Perfikot’s reputation or the Brandelis Clan’s honor, he won’t interfere.
Compared to Perfikot, he better understands how rumors spread.
Nonetheless, Perfikot still wondered why these survey team members appeared nervous, but she didn’t ask and merely pointed at the points marked on the map: "These three southern points are temporarily excluded because they are too far south, and the climate isn’t suitable for simulating the harsh environment of the Arctic Circle.
However, these three locations can be considered as material transfer stations. Check them out when passing through."
Upon hearing Perfikot’s words, survey team members quickly noted what she said, and someone began organizing related materials.
Perfikot continued pointing at the map, evaluating each location: "This location on a solitary island, although not far from the coast, is inconvenient for material transportation, Furthermore, it’s a volcanic island, and volcanic eruptions or other geological activities would be dangerous. Exclude it."
With that, Perfikot marked an X on the location.
Then she pointed at the northernmost location: "This area is too close to the Arctic Circle; although the climate suits as a base for Arctic research, consider the difficulty of excavating permafrost in cold climates.
Find relevant data for this area, I need to know the specific thaw period. If the time is too short, exclude it."
After reviewing all fifteen locations, Perfikot finally retained nine which she deemed suitable as reserve options for this survey activity.
