Chapter 112: Chapter 112: Not Based on Likes or Dislikes

After inquiring with the captain why they took more time than expected to reach the New Continent, Perfikot adjusted the ship’s navigation equipment according to the captain’s response.

The reason for their delay was simply that they couldn’t find their bearings and had to proceed along the original maritime route, constantly lowering altitude to confirm their direction, which wasted a lot of unnecessary time.

But after Perfikot improved the navigation equipment, this was no longer an issue.

The upgraded navigation system could confirm directions better, and with Perfikot’s suggestion to the captain to rise above the cloud layer to avoid bad weather, Perfikot was confident their return journey would be much faster.

The Duke of Gloucester didn’t stay long; after clarifying matters with Perfikot, he had the Flying Airship send him back.

Although he had bought some time for himself by feigning illness and using a double, returning quickly would undoubtedly expedite the next step of their work, benefiting him, Perfikot, and everyone involved.

The time until the apocalypse was closing in, and every minute and second were incredibly precious; no one could afford to waste time.

Watching the Duke of Gloucester’s airship depart, Perfikot turned to face Foster, saying to the old butler, "Grandpa Fu, considering your years of loyalty to the Brandlis Clan, I won’t hold today’s incident against you. I hope I won’t see you defying my will next time."

Having said that, Perfikot no longer sought help from the old butler and left Eagle’s Beak Cliff on her own.

The old butler watched Perfikot’s departing figure with a sense of hurt and regret for meddling earlier that day.

Yet he did not regret his interjection because he did not want to see Perfikot completely at odds with the Empire.

Moreover, he understood that Perfikot’s plans required the support of the Empire; without it, she would find it very hard to survive the impending apocalypse alone.

Even if Perfikot could survive, it would be too lonely with just herself.

Foster did not want to see Perfikot grow old alone, with only those cold puppet maids for company.

Besides, Foster could tell that his young lady had a kind heart; she genuinely did not wish to see the Empire’s millions of subjects perish helplessly in the impending disaster.

Otherwise, there was no reason for Perfikot to engage with the Noble Council and warn them of the apocalypse, knowing full well their character.

Even after being humiliated, she tried every means to make them take the matter seriously.

It was only because of Perfikot lending the Philosopher’s Stone to the Astrologers of the Astronomical Society that they could make that doomsday prediction; otherwise, even if they exhausted the society’s resources, it would have been impossible to predict events three hundred years ahead.

So, Foster could see that Perfikot sincerely wanted to save more people.

Foster did not want Perfikot to regret this one day.

Although the people in the Noble Council were truly infuriating and detestable, often one could not decide the right and wrong of matters based on personal likes and dislikes.

Knowing the nature of those nobles yet having to cooperate with them, Foster had witnessed such situations many times when the old Baron Brandelis was alive.

That stubborn old Knight on the battlefield also had to learn to compromise when dealing with these nobles, doing things against his preferences.

Because he was also a noble, and compromise and exchange of interests were the true ways of noble survival.

Or rather, living in this world, there are always things that require compromise, retreat, and going against one’s preferences.

As long as it doesn’t violate one’s principles, sometimes taking a loss or going against one’s preferences isn’t hard to accept.

In Foster’s view, Perfikot was still a child and thus judged things so clearly in terms of like and dislike.

Though it’s not a bad thing, her age determined her way of judging right from wrong, yet her changing identity placed her in a position where personal likes and dislikes should not dictate decisions.

In previous matters, Foster could clearly sense that Perfikot was overwhelmed, which is why he offered advice.

Even though it might have caused displeasure and resentment in his young lady, Foster did not regret it because this was something he had to do as the Butler of the Brandlis Clan.

It was just that watching Perfikot leave angrily made Foster a bit sad, as it was the first time Perfikot had been angry with him.

After leaving Eagle’s Beak Cliff, Perfikot had more or less calmed down.

Though she was indeed angry before, being a Transmigrator and an adult who had been in the workforce for years before crossing over, she wasn’t one to let her emotions dictate right or wrong.

The reason she appeared so angry and resistant, besides genuinely disliking those noble pests, was because she had the capital to do so now.

Why should I compromise myself when I can do things according to my likes and dislikes?

But when enough interests were at stake, she could shift her stance and temporarily suppress her likes and dislikes.

Just like before crossing over, people criticized bosses as capitalists and condemned the 996 work culture as exploitative, yet if the pay was right, who would complain about the workload or long hours?

It’s the same for Perfikot; with enough interests to exchange, she could tolerate those noble pests.

After all, dealing with those noble pests is unavoidable in facing the apocalypse and saving more people.

Given that, why not use this to gain more tangible benefits for herself?

As expected, being the Northern Guardian and holding actual military power, along with unrestrained authority, was a very profitable deal for Perfikot.

But these matters were not important now. What was important was that the alchemy instruments and equipment she needed had finally arrived, allowing her to leverage her expertise as an alchemy master to continue advancing her various research projects.

These projects were crucial to her entire plan and could not be delayed.
