Chapter 350: [Skill Acquired: Vine Armor]
"You want to fight them alone?!" Thorn asked incredulously. "Are you crazy?!"
"Kinda." Ren grinned back.
Thorn stared at him, jaw hanging open. Then, he turned to Lilith, brows raised. You’re not going to stop him?"
"Why should I?" Lilith frowns. "He wants to do it alone because he cares for us. And there’s no way they can kill him. Us? We’re not so immortal now, are we?"
Thorn stared at her, a shocked frown on his face, before sighing in defeat. "It’s a scary day, when I’m the voice of reason."
Ren chuckled, turning back to the glowing eyes that surrounded them. "A scary day indeed."
With a kiss on Lilith’s forehead and a nod at Thorn, he stepped quietly away from the clearing, making as much noise as he could as he moved between the massive tree trunks.
The yellow eyes above shifted with him, tracking his movement like predators watching their prey.
He didn’t look back at Thorn and Lilith. They needed rest. Real rest. He was the only one still standing. The only one who could buy them time.
Once he was far enough, past a fallen log and into a more open section of the jungle, he stopped and turned his eyes to the trees.
Then he shouted.
"HEY! I’m right here!"
His voice echoed, bouncing off bark and branches. The jungle fell still for a beat.
Then came the hoots.
Angry, wild, echoing from above and around. Leaves rustled. Branches shook. The trees came alive.
Dozens of orangutans dropped from the canopy, their eyes glowing like golden coins in the shadows. Their long arms swung wildly as they screeched, charging toward him from every angle.
Ren didn’t hesitate.
He threw out his hands. "Push!"
A shockwave erupted from his palms, slamming the nearest orangutans backward.
Some hit trees with bone snapping force, and others were launched into the underbrush, vanishing into a tumble of vines and leaves.
But more came.
He kept firing Pushes, each burst flinging away two, three, even four attackers. The air filled with the sound of cracking wood, flesh bursting into pulp, and loud howls of rage.
But they didn’t stop. They kept coming.
They began dropping on him from above, surrounding him, outpacing his resonance blasts.
One managed to grab his arm.
Another latched onto his back.
Ren snarled and twisted, smashing one into a tree with brute force. He threw another to the ground and stomped down with a crunch.
But they didn’t stop. And the wave of fur and fury eventually swallowed him.
They clawed and punched, biting down with jagged teeth. One struck him across the face. Another drove its claws into his ribs, digging deep with the intent of ripping his heart out.
He crashed to the ground beneath their weight, his cloak torn, his skin shredded.
But he wasn’t about to give up. And as if on cue, Unfettered Enhancement answered.
[Level Up: Regeneration has reached Level 100.]
[Skill Acquired: Vine Armor.]
He growled, his voice deep and low, and like geysers of water erupting from cracked ground, his vines erupted from the jungle floor.
They surged up around him, wrapping around his arms and torso, forming bio armor around him.
Blood leaked from his wounds, but where his skin tore, vines emerged, twisting through muscle and bone, knitting him back together even as the injuries reopened.
He stood, covered in green armor, his eyes wild.
He lashed out.
One orangutan was blasted backward by a Push that cratered the earth.
Another was caught by vines and ripped in half.
Ren’s movements grew savage, fast, brutal, and effective. But even with his power, even with his speed and his fury, the numbers were too much.
They overwhelmed him again, but this time, they were not able to penetrate through his armor.
Their claws tore at the surface, tearing it, but before they could break through, the armor regenerated, keeping their attacks out.
He roared and sent another shockwave outward, clearing space around him. But his breaths were ragged now as the orangutans returned with a vengeance, the horde bashing him from every direction, sending his body snapping this way and that under their barrage.
Before long, a claw slammed into his chest, sending him crashing into the jungle floor.
He exhaled, his vision swimming. He tried to stand, but another fist hit him, sending him to the floor again.
One of the orangutans climbed on top of him, chest heaving. It raised its arms and let out a victorious roar, pounding its fists against its chest like a drumbeat of triumph.
And then, another roar resounded.
This one was much louder. Much deeper.
The kind that didn’t come from the throat of something small, but from the gut of something much larger than normal.
The jungle shuddered.
The trees bowed.
The orangutans froze.
Something was coming.
Something bigger.
Something meaner.
Just like the lava ring, the jungle had a guardian.
A boss monster.
Ren groaned, blinking through the blood caked on his face.
Of course.
How could he have forgotten?
He turned his attention to the vines surrounding him as armor. His new skill. Why not turn it into a weapon?
He grit his teeth, clenched his fists, and let go.
"Push."
The resonance didn’t target the orangutans. It didn’t blast outward like before.
This time, Ren aimed the resonance at the vines woven through and around his body.
The reaction was instant.
His vine armor exploded off him like shrapnel from a bomb, shooting outward in all directions.
The orangutans surrounding him didn’t even have time to scream.
The jungle lit up with motion and noise as razor sharp vines ripped through flesh and fur. Dozens of them were impaled mid-leap, torn apart as the vines twisted and curled around them like whips.
Blood splattered the trees.
Bodies dropped like sacks of meat.
Within seconds, the clearing was silent again, littered with the broken bodies of orangutans, their limbs twisted, chests punctured, and skulls crushed.
This was the difference between a vine Push and a regular Push.
The regular Push mostly inflicted blunt force trauma when sent out as a wave, and some orangutans could survive it. But the vine Push? It had the vines to act as bullets, ripping through their flesh like tearing through paper.
Ren staggered to his feet, sweat and blood dripping down his face.
Then, slowly, the vines returned.
They slithered across the blood soaked ground, wrapping back around him like old friends, reweaving themselves into a new layer of armor.
His shoulders rose and fell as he stood tall once more, green lines glowing faintly beneath his skin.
And then the trees ahead of him groaned.
Branches snapped.
Something huge moved through the jungle, and the canopy bent and parted to let it through.
It stepped into the clearing. An absolute monster.
The boss.
It was twice as tall as the others, nearly ten feet of muscle and bone wrapped in thick orange fur that bristled like fire.
Its arms hung long, its knuckles dragging across the ground, and each finger was tipped with claws that were at least three inches long.
Its face was human-like, but stretched, with deep-set yellow eyes that glowed in the dim light.
The creature stopped.
It stared at Ren.
Then, slowly, it leaned back, filling its lungs with air.
The jungle held its breath.
And the boss orangutan roared.
The sound shattered the silence of the forest, rattling the bones of every creature in the ring.
Ren stood there, silent, his fists clenched, staring down the beast.
Then, he took a step forward, chuckling in amusement.
"Was that supposed to be scary?"
