Chapter 91: 89, take jobs again, all comers are welcome

Outside Lu Lin’s tent, all the City Defense Army soldiers stationed in Mingze City were neatly lined up on both sides. Leading them was the sergeant in charge. In addition, there was the highest-ranking officer of the Mingze City Guard, the commander-in-chief, Hu Nan, who was responsible for the local city guards in the western part of Beiqiu Continent. Guan Yue and Zheng Yulong, along with two Star Guides from Green City and more than ten Star Guides dispatched from Double Name City, were all standing outside the door. Half an hour had passed since Lu Lin’s Guiding had ended, but these people were still standing there, motionless, waiting for Lu Lin to emerge.

Just as Lu Lin walked out of the tent, feeling proud of his idea to open a traditional Chinese medicine massage clinic after retiring, his steps suddenly halted.

Liu Huasheng, the commander of the Mingze City Guard garrison; Guan Yue, the Leader of the Green City Star Guide Division; and Qiao Qian, the Leader of the Double Name City Star Guide Division, stood together behind an unfamiliar middle-aged military officer. Behind them were the nearly 2,000 soldiers for whom Lu Lin had worked day and night to complete their Star Skill Guidance over the past two days.

What was going on?

"You must be Master Lu Lin. Thank you for your contributions to Mingze City and the City Defense Army in the Western Region," the officer said. "On behalf of the three hundred thousand soldiers of the Western War Zone, I extend my sincerest gratitude to you."

Commander-in-Chief Hu Nan stepped forward with a friendly expression and shook Lu Lin’s hand. Lu Lin, bewildered, extended his own hand, completely unaware of what was happening.

Weren’t things going well just a moment ago? How did it suddenly become like this?

Female cultural soldiers came forward to present flowers to Lu Lin. Whether it was part of the protocol or not, two of them even hugged him. One of the young women even managed to press her cheek against Lu Lin’s during their embrace. If Lu Lin hadn’t reacted quickly, he might have lost his chastity, he thought.

"Thank you, Lu Lin."

"Thank you, Master Lu!"

After the young women presented their flowers, a huge cheer erupted from the formations of soldiers behind them. They were truly disciplined soldiers; though the cheers rose in waves, each louder than the last, they were orderly and resonant, stirring Lu Lin’s blood. Tonight’s scene was far more overwhelming than the cheers from the martial artists at the Wild Kill Martial Arts Hall back then.

As Lu Lin left the Mingze City Guard garrison, his face flushed, he still couldn’t quite comprehend what had just happened while sitting in the camouflaged maglev car.

"President Guan, Old Zheng, what... what was all that about?"

"Haha!" Zheng Yulong laughed heartily, without restraint. Saying nothing, he pulled out a few photos and showed them to Lu Lin. In the photos, Lu Lin looked dazed, his posture unsteady, as if he were floating on air.

Guan Yue slapped Zheng Yulong’s arm. "Xiao Zheng, don’t tease Lu Lin. If it were you back then, you might not have fared any better."

"Lu Lin," Guan Yue continued, "the man in the car ahead is Hu Nan, the Commander-in-Chief of the City Defense Army for the entire Western Region."

"This morning, Garrison Commander Liu Huasheng reported your situation to Commander-in-Chief Hu Nan, and he came all the way from over two thousand miles away specifically to see you."

"Be very careful with your words during dinner tonight, understand?"

"Commander-in-Chief Hu Nan has already reached the Level 8 Breaking Delusion Realm. Even outside the military, he’s a top-tier master."

Lu Lin nodded. He had already sensed Hu Nan’s aura earlier; it was far stronger than that of his teacher, Jiang Yueming, though it seemed considerably weaker than Zhao Lei’s. Faced with such a prominent figure, Lu Lin naturally wouldn’t dare to speak carelessly.

The maglev car was swift, arriving in Mingze City in just twenty minutes.

「Mingze Hotel.」

This was supposedly the most high-end hotel in Mingze, but in Lu Lin’s view, it was merely average. It was only five stories tall. To earn extra rent, the hotel had leased half of its ground floor to a supermarket; the other half housed the hotel’s reception.

Naturally, someone had already reserved a private room for Hu Nan in advance. Everyone filed into it.

The attendees representing the City Defense Army were Hu Nan and Liu Huasheng. Also present were the Star Guides from Double Name City and Green City who had come to offer support. In total, over a dozen people were seated according to rank, with Lu Lin placed directly between Hu Nan and Liu Huasheng.

"Student Lu Lin, thank you for your efforts on behalf of our Western Region," Hu Nan began, raising his glass. "Successfully Guiding Star Skills for over 1,500 soldiers in such a short time is a great service. We in the Western Region will remember this debt. If you have any need in the future, please do not hesitate to ask."

Hu Nan toasted Lu Lin, making him feel greatly honored. This was the man in charge of the Western Region of Beiqiu Continent, a figure of immense strength and authority!

Lu Lin quickly downed the wine in his glass. "You’re too kind, General Hu," he said. "I also come from a commoner’s family, so I can empathize with the struggles of many brothers in the City Defense Army who undergo Awakening but are then unable to comprehend Star Skills. Besides, I only contributed a little this time. It’s hardly worth mentioning."

"Lu Lin, that’s far too modest," Qiao Qian interjected. "This time, all the Awakened soldiers from the entire Western Region were sent to Mingze. Without you, even with all of us combined, it might have taken ten days to half a month, if not longer, to finish Guiding all the soldiers."

"Exactly. A young man should have a young man’s vigor!" Hu Nan nodded in agreement. "Lu Lin, we all know how skilled you are at Guiding. Excessive modesty isn’t fitting. Come, let’s all raise our glasses and toast our Great Hero Lu Lin!"

「After three rounds of drinks and several courses...」

As the head of the Western Region, Hu Nan naturally wouldn’t spend the entire time flattering a young man like Lu Lin. A few well-placed words were sufficient.

"Lu Lin," Hu Nan said, leaning closer and lowering his voice, "actually, I have a small matter I’d like to trouble you with this time."

"General Hu, please speak freely. As long as it’s something I, Lu Lin, can do, I will not refuse."

"Excellent! I appreciate that straightforwardness, Lu Lin." Hu Nan laughed heartily and patted Lu Lin’s shoulder. "We’ve recently started a training program for sergeants in the Western Region. It includes many of our finest soldiers, some at Level 1 Peak, some at Level 2 Peak, and even some at Level 3 Peak."

"But as you know, our Western Region is a remote and underdeveloped part of the Beiqiu Continent. We’re lucky if we see a Star Guide even once a year."

"I had originally planned to send them to East Forest for Star Skill Guidance after their training concluded..."

"General Hu, I understand," Lu Lin interjected. "Rest assured, you can leave this matter to me." He patted his chest in a confident promise.

These were sergeants at Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 Peak! If he could have them inscribe Star Skills within his Star Power Domain, it would be an immense gain for him! This was an opportunity Lu Lin couldn’t even beg for; how could he possibly refuse?

"Good. Young Lu, you truly are a fine young man." Hu Nan was very satisfied with Lu Lin’s response. "Then I’ll entrust this matter to you."

He wasn’t an ignorant man; the more he experienced, the more he understood the value of talent. He had heard of Star Guides like Lu Lin before—those capable of Guiding Martial Artists to comprehend Star Skills with a 100% success rate. But those individuals were typically at a much higher level, usually achieving such a perfect success rate only after more than a decade of being certified as Masters. Intermediate Star Guidance Masters and Advanced Star Guidance Masters simply couldn’t achieve 100% success.

Furthermore, whether due to luck or actual skill, Lu Lin’s Guiding resulted in an astonishing 8.27% rate of comprehending Double Star Skills. This was even more impressive than what ordinary Masters could achieve. If it weren’t for Lu Lin’s youth, Hu Nan might have suspected he was a Master who had come to the Western Region in disguise to "deliver warmth."
