Chapter 61: The Goblin Quest

"There’s a pressing crisis, and the Federation has its hands full with other matters. This particular issue falls within the Adventurer’s Guild’s jurisdiction, but it’s been extremely difficult to get to the heart of the matter."

He picked up a cubic object and held it in his palms.

"To make things worse, the tier of Adventurers that the Guild has available are very few. And the small number shows no interest in participating in the subjugation—which is understandable. It offers little reward and demands tremendous effort. Plus, the circumstances are strange and uninvestigated. The matter is simply too perilous for Adventurers."

Lucien waited, listening to him.

The Guildmaster looked straight into his eyes.

"The Goblin Infestation in the west is a quest that’s been designated Tier 3, after lower tiers have tried and failed. I’m making a special request—due to your stellar reputation—if you could attempt to eradicate the Goblins terrorizing the west coast. Of course, this isn’t compulsory; you have the right to refuse."

Lucien was silent for a while.

[You have received a Quest]

[Quest: Adventurer’s Trial]

Due to high reputation among the common folks, the Guildmaster of Rhamiran Federation Adventurers’ Guild has proposed a unique Trial. Form a party and eradicate the Goblins terrorizing and vandalizing the resources of the inhabitants of the West.

Quest Reward: Tier 3 Adventurer Status, 2 levels, +5,000 Reputation.

Quest Failure: -10,000 Reputation.

Lucien exhaled and looked at the man.

"It’s alright. Would it be acceptable to do this solo?"

The Guildmaster frowned subtly.

"That’s dangerous. I understand that you’re as strong as the rumors say, but this is a game of numbers. Going solo is perilous."

Lucien thought for a while...

’But I really don’t want to do this with people...’

He looked back and raised a brow.

’Right... this guy.’

He turned to the Guildmaster.

"If it’s alright with you, then I’d like to take this guy. Or is he utterly useless?"

It was a tease—Lucien knew he wasn’t. After all, he could see the details about him.

The boy was decent—his stats weren’t much to boast about. Lucien didn’t really have much use for him per se; he just needed people in his party.

And the boy’s mana and intelligence were genuinely impressive. Lucien believed he would be able to at least watch his own back.

The Guildmaster looked at Adrian, who chuckled sheepishly. Then the man sighed.

"Well, currently he’s on loan to the Guild, so you can absolutely make use of him. And he’s capable enough to fend for himself—I’m sure he’ll be of good use to you."

Lucien nodded.

"Well then, do I need anything else?"

The Guildmaster dropped the cubic object he had been fondling and smiled.

"Don’t worry—everything will be taken care of by Adrian here."

He stood up and bowed slightly.

"Would it be alright if you excuse us two for a bit?"

Lucien looked at Gaya, who stood, and the two of them walked out.

As they closed the door behind them, he looked at her.

"What do you think?"

Gaya shrugged.

"Nothing in particular—it’s safe to go to the subjugation."

"You say it’s safe to go to something many Adventurers are fleeing from? I’m not even sure I’m Tier 1 worthy."

She flipped her hair and turned to him.

"You speak as though you’re not dying to go to that front yourself. If it’s the Goblin Infestation, it’s probably the same one as the woman from outside the gate. You want to do this more than anyone, you helpless boy."

Lucien looked away from her.

"Yeah, sure, whatever you say."

Both of them walked away from the door, heading downstairs.

They waited at the bottom of the stairs, and within five minutes, Adrian was already walking down.

He reached them and chuckled sheepishly, touching his head.

"Ha... it’s a real honor to go on a subjugation with you."

Lucien folded his arms, looked at him, and exhaled.

"Well, sure. Let’s go."

"Uh?"

Adrian raised his brows.

"What? Now?"

Lucien looked at him.

"What?"

Adrian chuckled slightly.

"I mean, don’t you want to rest?"

Lucien winced slightly.

"Rest? Why would I rest here?"

Adrian was still scratching his hair, blinking at Lucien.

"Well... uhm, I see..."

He exhaled and shrugged.

"Well, whatever you want. However, give me a few minutes—let me wrap up some of my duties and I’ll be with you shortly."

He was walking forward but suddenly stopped and looked back.

"And please don’t go to the main hall—we can’t predict people’s reactions when you arrive. We’ll leave through the back door."

Lucien suddenly wanted to question what the fuss was all about.

But he remained silent as he watched the boy leave.

The light in the sky was dimming, and there was a gentle orange glow cast over the Federation’s buildings, bathing their steel-and-stone surfaces in the quiet melancholy of dusk.

The warm hue bled across rooftops and walls, stretching long shadows beneath archways and flagpoles that fluttered lazily in the wind.

Lucien leaned against a wooden post near the back door, arms folded, his eyes drawn toward the descending sun.

He didn’t like waiting. But he didn’t mind the silence.

Moments passed. A couple of guards strolled nearby, nodding respectfully before pretending not to notice him.

Then Adrian finally appeared.

He was dressed differently, wearing sleek, dull green armor. It was a fine choice of armor and almost had Lucien envious.

But he wasn’t bad either—he was wearing a white ensemble that carried the essence of the wild. And his wolf mask delivered the look of an enigmatic creature perfectly.

He particularly enjoyed it because, aside from mentioning that he was Player Cien, no one would ever know.

However, he also knew he could be shooting himself in the foot. But he didn’t know to what extent. Either way, he wasn’t obsessed with hiding his identity.

He just wanted to game in peace.
