Chapter 520 - 520 518 Frost Star Eclipse
Chapter 520: Chapter 518 Frost Star Eclipse Chapter 520: Chapter 518 Frost Star Eclipse Number One of Summer Days.
It’s a bright star during the summer, rising and setting with the moon from the east to the west, tracing a bizarre path across the sky. During the warm season, it appears in the east, and during the ice age, in the west. Such chaotic movement reveals its extraordinary identity.
Only a planet can have such a strange astronomical trajectory.
After all, most of the stars in the sky are distant suns from the cosmos, almost stationary relative to the Dragon Sleep Continent solar system.
Therefore, no matter when one observes, the positions of the stars are basically fixed.
Only planets are constantly changing positions relative to the Dragon Sleep Continent, but through calculation, one can roughly predict their orbit in the short term.
A month earlier, Sullivan had led his team to predict the trajectory of Number One of Summer Days.
And tonight, Sharp Knife Mountain Observatory has once again captured Number One of Summer Days, accurately following the predicted trajectory.
“Announce it, Professor!” the students clamored, “This is a planet just like our Dragon Sleep Continent. Maybe right now, humans up there are using telescopes to look at us too!”
Sullivan was equally excited.
But he still waved his hand: “Not so fast. We’ll continue to observe for a while longer, and even if Number One of Summer Days is a planet, don’t get too hopeful. Following Lord Russell’s guiding theories, I surmise it’s not located within the habitable zone.”
“Yes, if it’s not in the habitable zone, the climate on Number One of Summer Days would be extremely harsh, incapable of fostering human life,” a student echoed.
But another student said, “Maybe it’s not suitable for human habitation, but perhaps it’s perfect for Snow Giants. Professor, Number One of Summer Days might just be the world of the Snow Giants invading us. It’s even further from the sun than we are and much colder, which would be why it has encased the Dragon Sleep Continent in ice!”
“We’ll just observe before making any assumptions when we need more information,” Sullivan stated.
Sharp Knife Mountain Observatory is probably the first observatory on the Dragon Sleep Continent, and he, Sullivan, is likely the first human astronomer, so this is definitely humanity’s first time observing Number One of Summer Days so formally.
Nobody is going to snatch away his research findings, so there’s no need to rush.
In the blink of an eye.
The warm season had ended, and once again, the ice age came, bringing Year 5584 of the Dragon Calendar to a close as snowflakes fluttered down incessantly.
Sharp Knife Mountain Observatory, too, was cloaked in a thick layer of snow.
After the snowfall, the weather cleared up, but the temperature dropped even further.
Director Sullivan, wrapped in a cotton jacket, was busy writing his latest work in a room heated by “Black Jade Charcoal.”
His paper on the phases of the moon, sent to the Grand Scholar Roundtable, had caused a stir. Several Grand Scholars found it hard to believe that the Dragon Sleep Continent was a planet orbiting around the sun.
Yet, as this was a world beyond the ordinary, the Grand Scholars, after their initial surprise, granted Sullivan a research grant.
They wanted him to continue his astronomical studies and unravel the mysteries of the celestial phenomena.
At the same time, they hoped Sullivan could write a book about the mysteries of the moon phases and the sun, with the responsibility of promotion falling on the Grand Scholar Roundtable.
Sullivan, who had not been given much attention in Red Castle and Furious Wind City, had made a name for himself thanks to the Sharp Knife Mountain Observatory.
Suddenly, he became a strong candidate for the Grand Scholars.
“Blair, add some Black Jade Charcoal. The stove has gotten cold,” Sullivan called out as he felt his hands getting cold while he wrote.
He couldn’t help but call for his servant.
Black Jade Charcoal is a special kind of Black Jade Paste, developed by the Black Oil Square Refinery, which adds particulates to black oil to mimic the form of coal. Black Jade Charcoal is long-lasting and produces a lot of heat, making it very suitable for heating during winter.
The servant didn’t come in.
Instead, several assistants and students burst in through the door: “Professor, an eclipse, an eclipse, we’ve captured the eclipse phenomenon!”
“An eclipse phenomenon?” Sullivan’s expression shook, and he threw away the pen in his hand. “Quick, take me to see it!”
By the time they arrived in front of the astronomical telescope, which had been fitted with a filter to observe the sun’s light, it was already aimed at the sun of the Ice Age.
It’s very difficult to clearly see the sun with the naked eye.
But Sullivan quickly saw, through the telescope, the sun and a small, slowly moving black dot on its surface.
“It is indeed an eclipse phenomenon!” Sullivan exclaimed, “Ever since Lord Russell proposed that a planet passing across the sun’s surface would form a small black dot in an eclipse phenomenon, this is the first time our Sharp Knife Mountain Observatory has captured an eclipse!”
A student pushed up his nearsighted glasses— a product of the Blackfire Glass Kiln Factory, currently still in the testing phase and yet to be officially marketed. Local scholars and students can enjoy priority access.
He slowly said, “But teacher, we have already observed the planets of Summer One, Winter One, Spring One, and Autumn One. According to estimations, these four planets will not experience an eclipse phenomenon in the near future.”
“So this is a completely new planet!” another student shouted. “Haha, we have discovered a fifth planet.”
Sullivan looked through the astronomical telescope for a good while.
After looking until his eyes were fatigued, he stood up and said, “Indeed, this is the fifth planet we have discovered… it’s just that this telescope is not good enough, the imaging isn’t stable, such a big planet looks flickering.”
In Sullivan’s observation, the small black dot of the eclipse sometimes appeared faint, at other times it was distinct, and the color was unstable.
“Teacher, it doesn’t seem to be a problem with the telescope,” one student said. “The background sun hasn’t changed at all, and teacher, look, when we shift the lens a bit and put the small black dot to the edge of the field, it still flickers.”
“Could it be that the eclipse phenomenon is just like this?” someone pondered.
“Anyway, it’s very strange,” Sullivan said. “You continue to observe; students from the orbital department will come with me to estimate the orbit of this planet. Then tonight, we’ll search the sky again, aiming to find it!”
“Yes, teacher!”
“Yes, Director!”
Assistants and students responded excitedly; discovering a planet meant that Lord Russell would send a reward. They had received significant rewards for the planets of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter Ones, and this was an important motivation for everyone to persevere at the mountaintop during the Ice Age.
…
In the depths of the Snowfield, atop the mountains.
A gigantic Snow Giant squatted at the peak, with its hands held above its head, supporting the cross-legged Frost Giant Da.
Missing a middle finger, and a tusk broken off.
But Shuang Da’s mental state had never been better; it gazed up at the sky at a forty-degree angle, blue light condensing on its eyelids as if wearing a pair of sunglasses, and stared straight at the sun of the Warm Season.
From its perspective, it could see the dazzling sun with what seemed like a very small, slowly revolving black dot.
“Faust!”
“My beloved Frost Star has finally entered the orbit of Dragon Sleep Continent. With the Heavenly Track overlapped, the Frost Giant Legion is about to descend!”
Shuang Da squinted.
Continuing to talk to itself, “However, before the Frost Giant Legion descends, I must first complete my task, retrieve the Ultra Ice Sacred Instrument. Coordinating the execution of the millennia-old plan, using the carcass of Dragon Sleep Continent, to create a world belonging to the Frost Giants…”
The voice hesitated.
Shuang Da seemed to have an inexplicable lack of confidence in this plan: “Eternal Frost Star… a new world without the withering of death!”
It lowered its head, no longer looking at the Frost Star that was being eclipsed.
Instead, it asked itself in silence: “Can the Eternal Frost Star Plan really avoid the coming of death, can my people really survive in the new world… Yes, they can, they can, everything will get better, the Eternal Frost Star will never wither!”
