Chapter 401: Chapter 400: To Return (Extra Chapter, Request for Monthly Votes) Chapter 401: Chapter 400: To Return (Extra Chapter, Request for Monthly Votes) Atop the Ice and Snow Great Wall, the Thunder Beast occasionally let out moos akin to those of a cow, other than that, there was nothing but the howling of the blizzard.
Maolai wiped the condensation from the carriage window and looked outside; beyond the ramparts of ice and snow, he couldn’t make out any of the Snowfield’s scenery.
This left Maolai feeling somewhat disappointed, as he had wanted to catch a glimpse of the Snow Ghosts on the Snowfield.
As a serf of Red Castle, Maolai had spent his whole life in the sweltering plantations, busy with farming every day. He was unfamiliar with the bitterness of severe cold, nor had he ever seen the much-feared Snow Ghosts; his world was confined to the modest manor.
He thought he would spend his whole life living on the manor.
But then one day, unexpectedly, he and a group of young men and women from the manor were selected and presented to the newly risen Baron Thunderflame.
At first, Maolai didn’t know who Baron Thunderflame was, but once he heard that it was the youngest Flying Dragon Knight, he understood.
Russell Fluorescent Fungus!
The protagonist of “The Dragonriding Youth”!
Of course, Maolai, as a serf, couldn’t afford to watch the play in the opera house. During the Dragon Birth Festival this year, the manor had hired a troupe of actors who had performed “The Dragonriding Youth”. Despite the actors being of mixed quality, it had thoroughly engrossed Maolai.
For several nights in a row, he dreamed that he became the young Flying Dragon Knight, marrying the princess and reaching the pinnacle of life.
And now, he had finally crossed paths with the young Flying Dragon Knight.
He became a serf of Russell.
“Blackflame Plains… I am going to farm for the new master at Blackflame Plains, they say the land is often invaded by Snow Ghosts, perhaps, I will see Snow Ghosts on Blackflame Plains?” Lost in thought for a moment, the window once again fogged up.
He didn’t bother to wipe it again, as even if he did, he would see no view.
Wrapping his cotton-padded coat tighter around himself, Maolai felt cold despite the crush of people in the carriage.
He had not seen the scenery of the Snowfield, but he had come to deeply understand its cold.
It was a cold that could penetrate layers of protection, stabbing into his body like a knife, making him feel cold no matter how many clothes he wore.
Suddenly.
There was commotion outside the carriage.
Maolai hurriedly wiped the window and looked outside, only to see several knights galloping by, apparently headed out beyond the Ice and Snow Great Wall to clear out a few stray Snow Ghosts.
The frost-resistant horses were covered in a layer of cotton cloth, but the knights wore only lightweight armor, with none in cotton clothing. The cold of the Snowfield could kill any commoner, but before the knights’ Fighting Spirit, it was inconsequential.
“Look, a dragon!” On the other side of the carriage, several young serfs suddenly cried out, “A dragon, it’s the new master’s dragon!”
Maolai tried to squeeze through to have a look, but there were too many people and he couldn’t budge an inch.
All he could do was listen enviously to the others exclaim, “How cool, the new master is escorting us to the new manor on a dragon!”
“That’s Sir Black Oil Dragon Rosai!”
“No, you should address Lord Rosai!”
The serfs were at sixes and sevens discussing the proper form of address, clearly having seen “The Dragonriding Youth,” and recognizing the name of Black Oil Dragon Rosai.
Maolai was extremely envious.
But soon he consoled himself: “Once at the new manor, I’ll definitely see the master’s dragon, I used to see dragons all the time at the Red Castle manor!”
The serfs didn’t know that the Bipedal Flying Dragon they saw was not Black Oil Dragon Rosai, but Ros the Clay Dragon.
It was Baron Roman who escorted the first batch of Thunder Beasts pulling carts along the Mountain River Trade Route.
Russell didn’t personally escort the Thunder Beast cart convoy; he only left Black Oil Dragon Rosai to accompany the convoy, while he himself rode Unicorn Polly back to Fluorescent Castle ahead of time.
Several days had already passed.
But the caravan of the Fluorescent Fungi Family had just returned to Fluorescent Castle.
“Russell, how come you are back so soon? I thought you’d stay a few days at Red Castle,” Rolin said with excitement. Rarely did she come back to her maiden home, and everything here made her feel more comfortable, from knights to servants.
“I did stay at Red Castle for a few days, and I just left there today,” Russell replied with a smile. He had even had lunch at Glowing Valley.
“Tsk, tsk, that’s really annoying. I struggled on the road for a week to get home from Red Castle, while you just ride a unicorn, and you can travel between Red Castle and home,” Rolin said with a tone full of envy.
After speaking, she did not forget to give Cooper a glare: “If I had known, I should have become a Phantom Beast Knight before giving birth to your child!”
After giving birth, with a great loss of vitality and blood, Rolin’s Fighting Spirit Cultivation had stagnated and could no longer progress.
Lady Meryl laughed as she held her daughter’s hand and said, “Having Fighting Spirit is enough. There’s no need to become a Phantom Beast Knight, and it’s not like you need to go hunt Snow Ghosts in the snowfield. You’re a mother now. You should be more stable.”
“But being a Phantom Beast Knight is cool. Look at Russell—he was at Red Castle in the morning and is already having tea with us in the afternoon.”
Russell chuckled and did not pay attention to his sister’s playful complaint but instead asked, “Where’s grandmother?”
“Your grandmother has gone to Great Wind Manor to see your aunt. She’s been worried sick about her the whole way and wished she could grow wings to fly back,” Lady Meryl said.
After returning from the Golden Prairie to Glowing Valley, Mrs. Roby, the aunt, became seriously ill and had been recuperating at Great Wind Manor. As Russell was made Baron Thunderflame, Aunt Roby naturally couldn’t attend and had to stay home to recover.
“Then I shall also go and visit my aunt,” Russell said.
Lady Meryl nodded, “Rolin, Cooper, you go with Russell to see your aunt. Oh, and Lola, you go along too.”
As for Lady Meryl herself, she found an excuse not to go. She didn’t want to join in on the topic between mother-in-law and sister-in-law—they would either gossip about this lady or that lady, and without needing to write letters, the conversations became even more vigorous.
After visiting Aunt Roby.
Rolin clamored for Russell to take her to the Blackflame Plains for a tour, but it was getting late, and she had no choice but to give up the idea.
The next day, Rolin and Cooper set out for the Blackflame Plains under Russell’s escort.
The Snowfield between Glowing Valley and the Blackflame Plains was already covered in dense cracks, and one could imagine that once the Warm Season arrived, the ice caps would melt extensively. In a few years, the ice caps would no longer exist.
“Has the land resonated?” Cooper asked curiously.
“Very likely,” Russell smiled and replied, “Be careful on the road, and don’t fall into the crevices. Snow Ghosts hide within them.”
Rolin clicked her tongue in amazement: “Doesn’t that mean, Russell, your territory is going to expand, like our grandfather’s at Tributary River Mouth?”
“Something like that.”
“How big are Blackflame Plains and Leize?” Cooper asked.
“Blackflame Plains might be as big as three thousand five hundred square kilometers. As for Leize, it hasn’t expanded to its limit yet, but I estimate it won’t be less than three thousand square kilometers,” Russell proudly explained. The larger the territory, the stronger the power of Flying Dragons and Pseudo-Dragons.
Black Oil Dragon Ross was already a top-pair Bipedal Flying Dragon.
And now, by observing Leize, he could tell that Unicorn Polly’s strength was also stronger than many Bipedal Flying Dragons.
Riding on Polly’s back, he gestured around: “Judging by the range of the ice caps’ fractures, combining the three territories, expanding to twenty thousand square kilometers should be no problem. It’s hard to say exactly how much it could expand.”
Glowing Valley was two thousand six hundred square kilometers, Blackflame Plains three thousand five hundred square kilometers, and Leize at least three thousand square kilometers.
Put together, they were at least about nine thousand one hundred square kilometers.
Which means, the future territory could at least double in size and then some.
